Title: Product Review: Gillette Fusion Power razor and Hydragel
Post by: Philly Fin Fan on February 08, 2006, 11:14:19 am
Many people that have been around for awhile remember my little rant on razors over the summer. I had always been a Gillette user, but switched to the Schick Quattro last spring. I hated it, and it tore up my face. I switched back to a Mach 3.

Gillette has now introduced a new razor, with 5 blades, and a precision blade on the back. I was a little weary about putting 5 blades against my face, thinking I would end up with all kinds of cuts. Gillette explains the reason for 5 blades, and it makes sense. When you have 3 or 4 blades, there is a lot of space between the blades. This space causes the blades to put pressure on the skin. With 5 blades, they are closer together, so there is less pressure on the face. Its almost like you are shaving with one blade. In fact, your skin is "tricked" into thinking this.

I bought the blade on Sunday morning. Since its a big launch, its on sale eevrywhere. I got mine at a Rite Aid (similar to CVS/Eckerd/Walgreens) for $9.99. The regular price is $12.99 for the Power one. I opted to get the power one, because of something I had read about a year ago in reference to the old Mach 3 Power. The vibrations actually do cause your stubble to loosen up a little, making it easier to shave. I also read that there is a silicon coating on the blades, and Gillette puts a thicker coating on the Fusion Power blades vs. the regular Fusion blades. (This makes sense, they make the more expensive blades better, so people will buy them. They make more money).

Anyway, when I got home, I decided to do a little experiment. I put on my shaving cream, and decided to shave half  of my face with my Mach 3 and half with the Fusion Power. Since I am right handed, I always end up with a better shave on the right side of my face. So I did that side with the Mach 3, and the left side with the Fusion Power. I was AMAZED at how close a shave I got with this razor. I didn't tell my wife that I did the half face shave, and asked her to feel my face. She actually said the left side felt smoother.

There also is a cool little innovation on the back side of the blades- a single precision blade for trimming. I recently started growing sideburns (because I'm cool) and this precision razor came in really handy for trimming them up. It also helps for that little nook where my nostrils meet my face.

My wife went out and bought me more blades yesterday, for our vacation. (The razor only comes with one blade). The blades are slightly more expensive. I think a 4pack of the power blades cost $12.49. We had a coupon that came with the razor for $2.00 off. There were also coupons in Sundays paper for a new Gillette Fusion Hydragel, so she bought me this as well since I needed more gel. I must say that this new gel is better than the standard Gillette gel I had been using. It contains aloe, and I can actually feel a difference. If you are happy with your current gel, I wouldn't run out to grab it, but if you need more shaving gel, or want to switch, its worth it.

All in all, I would say this razor, and the gel are well worth it.

I'll give the Gillette Fusion Power razor an A+.

I'd also give the Gillette Fusion HydraGel an A+.

By the way, for Christmas my wife got me a fogless mirror for shaving in the shower (well worth the $40). Aside from my experimental shave on Sunday morning, I have been using this in the shower. The Fusion Power is shower-safe.

Yes! I saw this new razor in Maxim and almost wet myself it looked so good. 5 blades! and a trimming blade! I was already sold last week, but forgot about it until your post. Once again Philly you are a gentleman and a scholar when it comes to shaving products.

I must admit, I'm a little leary about using 5 blades for other spots that need to be shaved on my body. (something that Scar Man and Dave always talk about)

Great review. I can not wait to try one of these on my dome. Hopefully it will shave closer and leave me smoother for longer. I will let you know.

Am I the only one left using my original Gillette 2 blade?

AZ Fins Fan 55, ever hear of a Head Blade?

I've heard other domed gentlemen rave about them.  I was considering shaving it all off at one point, and was going to try to pick one up.

I tried the regular (non-battery powered) version on my head and I must say it gave me a very close and comfortable shave as well.  The problem I've had with the Mach 3 is too many hair clots keep getting caught in it and won't rinse out, causing me to have to bang it against the side of the sink to loosen them.  Over time, that can break the razor handle.  In this case, I never had that problem.  The blades are so close together, no hair clots can get caught in them!!!  The one downside is the lube strip doesn't last as long as the Mach 3.

Grade: A-

I have heard of it but I have never seen one. Can you pick this up at any drugstore or department store. I would like to give it a try!!!!!

I was waiting to see your review on this since I know your a fellow chrome dome. This is good news. My major beef with the Mach 3 (and the only reason I don't use one) is just that. I would have to beat the shit out of the razor to get the hair out and the blade would always fall off or break and it became monotonous. Therefore I would use the Shick Extreme 3 throw aways because I did not have this problem with them. Now I really want to try the Fusion out even more!!!!!

Get it while it's still on sale at $8.99.  By the way, I also bought the battery powered one.  I'll try that next.

I got mine a month ago when stores stocked them early up here by mistake.  Like everything else lately, it's ripping my face apart.  Arg.

Ms. Dave just gave me the battery powered one as a V-Day gift.  ...unfortunately, I shaved for the occasion, with my Mach 3.  I will report back, after my beard grows out.  ...or if I get too impatient and shave my testicles.  (They'll be smooth like fabirge eggs.)

I am a cynical sort. This description sounds like Spinal Tab explaining why their amp goes to 11 to me.

I've actually found the opposite. My Mach 3 lube strip would start to "fade out" after 3 shaves. I used one Fusion Power blade from last Wednesday thru yesterday, and I was shaving every day over this time.

I started using the Gilette Sensor Excell because they sent me one on my 18th birthday.  (We already had a topic on how awesome this marketing is).  I became brand loyal with Gilette and bought the Mach 3 when it came out.

Then, I got a sample from Schick Quatro and started liking that better.  Now, I am not sure what to do... at this point, I don't care as much about 4 blades versus an extra 5th...
