This question has come up for many reasons lately...

My question is...how do you learn the best?

Visual - Someone actually showing you how to do something,or watching a video...

Sub visual - Being able to read a book,or directions

Audio - Someone lecturing,or walking you through it.

Hands On - by actually doing,what you are trying to learn...

My boss was one of the reasons why I asked...I gave him a list of things to get at Staples.He forgot the list on the front desk...He called me on his cell phone,and asked me what we needed at Staples.This morning,he called on his way in to the office,I asked him he went to Staples.He forgot,he said he'll stop right then.

He didn't ask me what we needed....but he got all 13 items that I asked for...with out a list...

I 've been doing some "sketch Artist" stuff on Photoshop,for work.My Boss came in and asked me how I did something....I showed him.He kept screwing it up,I was confused..He said Talk me through it.He was the first person,that I can remember meeting that learns best by Listening....

Between that,and watching the total Traing videos,and then seeing Mix,talk about learning Pro tools...all lead me to this question....

My answer to the question.....
If Jvides gave me a video on how to do my Taxes...I'm screwed,i would be frusrated as all hell...If Philly Gave me a video on how to install a Garbage disposal...I could figure it out....Reading a book,someone talking me through something...99% of the time is useless...I struggle with it horribily...someone gives me directions...I have to right them down to make sure I heard it right....I have to do most things Hands on...Show me how to do it,then I do it...I usually have it....

hands on is the way to go.  Wanna know how something works?  take it apart and put it back together.

An engineer's answer, if ever there was one.  I can learn in any of the ways listed, but I'm least likely to learn from audio or walkthrough.  I probably learn best from hands on or sub visual.

I'm hands on, mostly.  I can also do things visually.  I have trouble with audio, sometimes.  I am very good with proof-reading things, but people always ask me: "Can I read this to you?"  ...and I will have to read it in order to get the best grasp of it.

being an engineer....hands on is the only way!!   having lyme disease, i can't really learn at all by audio lecture/classtime.  i need a hands-on interactive approach.  i can't grasp math or something like that just by reading, but when it comes to learning history, facts, etc, i have an amazing level of reading comprehension.

I am a pretty visual person...and a good memory for things that I've read or seen a number of times (middle school locker, circa 1977: #238, combo of 16-7-32), but I think the best way to learn is hands-on. If someone reads something to me, I can usually visualize it well enough.

I think hands on is the best way to go. I can do visual as well but I would rather just get my hands dirty learning how to get something done!!!!!

Isn't Lyme disease a curable affliction?  Traditional treatment of acute Lyme disease usually consists of a minimum two-week to one-month course of antibiotics right?  Also, if you don't mind me asking, what types of symptoms do you have that prevent you from learning via audio or lecture/class time?

no, Lyme disease is NOT curable.  you can cure the symptoms, but not the disease.  the spryochetes lay dormant deep in your bloodstream, but physical trauma/mental stress have the potential to wake them up.  i've had some lyme symptoms slowy begin to resurface (i've been symptom free for the past 2 years).  i had surgery over Thanksgiving break, and the anaesthesia woke it up!  one night in January at 4AM i shot out of bed with the most immense pain EVER coursing through my body.  my chest felt like i was in Aliens and i couldnt control the spasms.  the last month i've been terribly sluggish, i can't get up for ANYTHING, and I'm even starting to nod off at work, something i havent done since i've been "cured".  so that's an indication to me that it's still not back to its dormant state....probably need to hit it with s'more pills.

traditional treatment is a lot of strong antibiotics.  some people also opt for IV treatment (although contrary to popular belief, this is actually less effective that oral medications).  i had lyme disease for 6 YEARS unidiagnosed, and most people die if they make it 10 years.  most people catch it really soon, it took SO long because i was constantly misdiagnosed.  it's the most mis-diagnosed disease AND the most under-diagnosed  disease.  i think the stat is for every 1 person diagnosed, 50 go undiagnosed.  dr's have even invented diseases (such as fibro-myalgia (sp?)) because it's so hard to diagnose.

as for the learning bit, lyme affects EVERY single aspect of your body.  it manifests itself different in every person, so the only way to properly diagnose it is to have a person write down everything wrong with them, talk to them, and figure it out.  blood tests are only 30% accurate.  it mostly has physical symptoms, and since it's usually caught early, thats all.  however, in the RARE cases (such as me) that the person manages to make it for so long undiagnosed, mental symptoms start to come.  it gives you a form of ADD, aloofness, etc.  it completely affects your personality, mellows you out, and stifles your emotions.  the worst part about it, is that is absolutely DESTROYS your short-term memory.  i can't remember SHIT from high school....NOTHING.  its so bad that i couldn't remember one of my best friends last name, and my girlfriend who i went out with for THREE YEARS on and off, and i couldnt remember her little brothers last name!!  they were like family to me!

I mean sometimes you don't have a choice. Example I'm very familiar with: the law. There's no "hands-on" way of learning a case. You just have to read it.
