Title: Something that pisses me off - voting
Post by: jtex316 on March 01, 2006, 10:19:46 am
This bothers me really badly.

Why is it "rude" to ask people who they voted for?  What the hell?  During the election-time, people were all "hush-hush" about who they voted for (I know who all those hippies voted for anyways).

Why is this such a stupid big deal?  Are the people who are all secretive like they just applied for a job for the CIA the ones who voted for the guy who lost?

You make such a huge deal about how important it is to cast a vote, and how everyone should vote, but you never want to talk about who you voted for.  That makes absolutely no sense.

Because people who talk crap about how their candidate was the best choice pre-election don't want to own up to their bad decisions post-election.

I actually think it's because they don't want to get into a political discussion with you. I have no problem saying who I voted for, but I will talk politics. Not everyone cares to get into that discussion. That's why it can be considered rude.

I think its cause they voted for Bush and are embarassed. :)

I think Phish has it right - I don't want to engage in a conversation, because the next logical remark is "why" and I don't feel like justifying my choice to anyone.

I don't wanna get into a political discussion w/ them.  I just wanted to know who they punched it in for.  That's all.  I know it's your "right" to keep your vote a secret, but I think when you're someone who pushes on to you "you HAVE to vote", you should at least have some common courtesy and at least tell me who the hell you voted for.  Who knows, maybe you can get me to vote the same, making "the difference", in your eyes.

Because you're not supposed to discuss religion or politics.

That's because everyone knows who he voted for - it's a requirement that comes with the color.

they're "taboo"

We can't talk about religion or politics, or question them in any manner...

...but we can talk about the South Park episode where they kill off a character, portray images of bodily fluids and sexual acts, or the latest Soprano episdoe that clearly promotes illegal killing and mobbing, or we CAN talk about politics, as long as you're in full support of Michael Moore's latest touchy-feely documentary blaming bush for him being such a fat ass incompetent and everything under the sun, or as long as you support Bill Maher and everything he says in his latest stand-up or Real Time w/ Bill Maher episode.

We live in a fucked up country if this is the case.

What exactly does that mean?

Certain ethnicities are expected to vote certain ways by self-appointed leaders of said ethnicities or risk being labeled negatively....

They're not taboo so much as they cause a lot of arguments and can cause a good time to go down hill rather quickly.

No one said we can't discuss it. As a board we have done it quite frequently. Some people just don't care to do it. You seem to think that everyone needs to agree with you on what they do or don't want to talk about. I am sure you will find people that don't want to talk about South Park, Sopranos, Michael Moore, or Bill Mahrer either.

2004 was kind of a shocker because the percentage of blacks voting for the democrat in the presidential election fell below 90% for the first time in recent memory.  The fact that he's a TV/movie star strongly suggests the same thing.  The fact that he's rich would usually indicate Republican, but for some reason that does not apply to people in the media industry (nor people who inherit/marry wealth).  This is no guarantee, just a couple of pretty strong indicators.

Hispanics are usually pretty much right down the middle.  In 2004 they went 44% Bush, 53% Kerry and 2% Nader.

Possibly interesting tangent....
A few years back I rode from Seattle to Bellingham with the owner of a semi-pro football team.  Owning a team is business/hobby - it's either a really bad business or an expensive hobby.   It's a thankless job because at least half the players act like children and do their best to screw over the owners (steal jerseys/gear, not pay their players fees, etc).  On the drive she espoused one conservative value after another while talking about her family and football team.  She could have been the keynote speaker for the Republican convention.  Towards the end of the drive I mentioned something about conservative values going hand in hand with operating her business and she nearly freaked.  "Oh hell no!  I ain't no sell out Republican!"

She was but just couldn't admit to it.

How exactly would running a football team equate to conservative politics? I can understand you mentioning how she discussed her family, but what examples of a football team would make you come to that conclusion?
