He's thinking that the Astros are simply not going to go very far this year :)

He is retiring.....until the break, then hopping on the bandwagon of a team that is a major contender. He'll be back. He just knows he probably can't go a full season and doesn't want to poop the bed like the end of last season so he is saving himself so he can finish strong.

Um... Clemens hasn't said anything one way or the other.  Pats06 has taken a HUGE liberty with Clemens statement (which was):

"If I had to decide today, I'd probably retire.  But I'm not going to make any decision until after the classic."

Where does that say "I am going to retire?"

I'll do it for you.  It's not a departure from what he said before.

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/2006-03-07-clemens_x.htm

From that article:

"Right now, I don't see myself playing," Clemens told USA TODAY on Monday. "I'm not going to start the season with anyone. I made my mind up. And when I do shut it down, I'll be walking away with a smile on my face. There will be no regrets, because I feel like I've done it the right way."

Clemens says it's highly unlikely he'll pitch again but can't guarantee he'll stay retired. He still has the Houston Astros, Texas Rangers, New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox pleading for him to pitch. He turns 44 in August, but he led the major leagues with a 1.87 earned run average last season pitching for the Astros.

Sound familiar?  He said the exact same thing when he left the Yankees and promptly signed with the Astros.  It's code.  If he does well in the WBC, he'll sign with someone this year.  If he struggles he can say "see?  I knew it all along."
