A lot has happened since our last mock draft (which happened over a month ago).  Since the new CBA and some big free agent moves, we now have a better idea of team needs.  So, I'm starting a new mock.

Here are the rules:

When you make a pick, try to put a little description of why this player fits, and your reasoning for the pick.
Please don't pick consecutive picks.  Give other people a chance to have a go at it.
Let people pick for their own team, where possible (Giants, Niners, Pats, Broncos, Cowboys all come to mind).
Do a little research -- make sure that you aren't picking a duplicate or that a big name guy doesn't drop.
No trades!  While we have to assume that some will happen, it's just too crazy to try and predict.

1. Houston Texans
REGGIE BUSH, RB -- USC

Bush goes first in this mock for two reasons -- 1) He's #1 in pretty much every other mock and analysis I've seen, and 2) he's the right choice for the Texans.  With Houston not quite ready to give up on David Carr, Bush is the guy who you can build an offense around.  People say that he's the one special player in the draft that you only see once every couple of years.  ...and if things pan out, he'll make David Carr better.

2.  New Orleans Saints
MATT LEINART, QB -- USC

Who cares if they just signed Drew Brees?  If his shoulder did a Pennington then they're S.O.L.  Better to grab a franchise QB, and see how things turn out...he has FAR more upside then Brees coudl ever have anyway.  Wanna trade him next year?  No problem!  He'll command a hefty draft pick ransom along with other possible players.

3. Tennessee Titans
D'BRICKSHAW FERGUSON, OT - - Virginia

OK, folks...before you lynch me, here's the logic.  The Titans still have McNair and Volek on the roster.  They continue to spurn teams that offer trades for Volek, meaning that he could be their starter sometime in the future.  The team has young talent along the defensive side of the football (no need for Mario Williams).  Brad Hopkins was recently released, leaving a hole at the left tackle position.  Ferguson is the latest tackle to come out of college with "Orlando Pace-like" buzz, so the Titans decide to keep McNair and Volek healthy by selecting a big, nasty left tackle. 

Vince Young and Jay Cutler tempt, but the Titans decide for an elite left tackle rather than risk messing up by selecting a QB with a funky throwing motion (Young) or a QB that has only recently risen so high on NFL draft boards. 

hmmm...so we have a team with no real need at QB taking one at #2, and a team that really needs a QB at #3 passing on one.

hmmm....

My feeling on this:  They actually take Leinart when he slips to # 3.  I think Young's going to free fall due to his throwing motion, and I think # 3 is too high for Cutler.  Rules say I can't pick a guy that's no longer around, and I can't trade down.  Ergo, I fill the team's second biggest need with D'Brickshaw Ferguson.

^^^ Can't argue too much on that... I think that, barring a trade down (which is what I believe will happen), the #2 and #3 picks above would be reversed.

They call it a "mock" for a reason...  ;D

New York Jets select.....

Vince Young - QB - Texas

I would have thought he would have been gone by now I can't see the Titans passing on him but he's here so the stinking Jets take him.

By the way if the Saints did take Leinart with the 2nd pick he would demand a huge contract and I don't see one team investing almost 100mil in 2 QB's!!!!! Just a thought!!!!!

I'm gonna knock out 2 picks, just to get past my 49ers:

With the #5 pick in the 2006 draft, the Green Bay Packers select LB A.J. Hawk from Ohio State.

The Pack will have a tough choice between Hawk and Mario Williams here, but I see their bigger need as LB, so Hawk it is. Green Bay gets a Zach Thomas clone to anchor their LB corps for the next 5-6 years at least. Ask any Miami fan how they feel about Zach, and you'll see why Hawk is the no-brainer pick for GB at #5.

With the #6 pick in the 2006 draft, the San Francisco 49ers select: TE Vernon Davis from Maryland.

If Hawk falls to #6 by some fluke of chance, then SF will pounce on the Buckeyes' LB in a second. If Hawk goes to GB as mocked here, then SF has a tough decision to make. Mario Williams to anchor their D-line, or mutant freak Vernon Davis to help the young offense develop. I see HC Nolan going with the mutant freak in this situation. This will slide Mario Williams further than I've seen any mock draft slide him down, so one of the next few teams will likely have to grab him.


The Oakland Raiders are on the clock for the #7 pick...

With the #7 pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the Oakland Raiders select QB Jay Cutler from Vanderbilt University.

The Raiders released Collins and haven't been successful yet in landing a veteran QB. They really want Young, but take Cutler if he is still there when they pick.

With the 8th pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills select.....

WR Chad Jackson from Florida


With Eric Moulds almost certainly not coming back, Buffalo drafts a speedster to go opposite Lee Evans.  Jackson's strong showings in the NFL Scouting Combine and UF's Pro Day have raised his stock considerably.

This is the shittiest mock I've ever seen.  No way do the Saints pick Leinart or Bills pick Jackson--pure craziness.

I know the Bills won't pick Jackson.  I'm just making Marv Levy and Dick Jauron look like the complete idiots they are.  This is OUR Mock Draft, and we can do whatever we want with it.

Since Tommy is retarded, I'm making the Bills pick again.  Let's try and be realistic here.  Here's a good idea: I you know that the team won't pick the guy, don't fuck up our mock by doing it here!

8. Buffalo Bills - Haloti Ngata, DT -- Oregon

Tommy is right -- the Bills need a receiver, but this draft is way too shallow in the first round for WRs to be wasting a pick this high...especially when there are lots of good 2nd and 3rd round worthy receivers on to fill needs.  The Bills need to get a tackle on both sides of the ball, and a lockdown safety.  Michael Huff will be a tempting pick here, but the Bills choose to go with a run-stuffer, as they were ranked 31st against the run in 2005.

The Detroit Lions are on the clock.

Matt Millen wants to reach for Jackson,. But the Ford family tells him he will be shot if he takes a reciver for the 4th year in a row in the first round.

With the 11th pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the St. Louis Rams select.....

DB Jimmy Williams of Virginia Tech.

The Rams need a safety to replace Adam Archuleta and take a versatile player who can play all four DB spots.

Just a suggestion, since we are trying to make this a mock draft not a mockery draft- How about we switch the players picked for New Orleans and Tennessee? It would make more sense and be more realisitc if New Orleans took Ferguson, and the Titans took Leinart. (these are very probable picks too).

I agree.  The Saints have their QB.  They would probably draft someone to protect him. 

I have no problem leaving the #2/#3 picks as they stand, simply because Tony raised a perfectly reasonable concern that the franchise could have (Brees' shoulder). We may look at drafting a QB at #2 after signing Brees to be expensive overkill, but I believe that when the draft rolls around, if the Saints' doctors tell ownership that Drew's shoulder isn't rehabbing at the rate they expected, I could see this pick becoming even more possible.

Rolle and Huff in the backfield for the Cards D for the years to come......wow I am salivating just thinking about it!!!!

12. Cleveland Browns
CHAD GREENWAY, OLB -- IOWA

The Browns need defense, and will most likely look at a D-lineman or linebacker on draft day.  With Mario Williams off the board, Greenway looks to be the next best fit -- but they have a tough time passing on Tamba Hali and Brodrick Bunkley.

With the 13th pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the Baltimore Ravens select Santonio Holmes, WR Ohio St.

I think alot of people might be looking for Baltimore to grab a QB, but with the "Big three" off the board by 13, and the Ravens seemingly committed to Kyle Boller, a speed guy makes sense here.  Mason and Clayton make a good tandem, but Holmes in the slot can do for them what Wes Welker did for the Dolphins in 2005.  The kid's got good hands, and good speed, but I don't think you'll see him running the deep route.  He'll be a good across the middle guy out of the slot, and a guy Boller can lean on to open up the lanes for Lewis and Anderson.

With the 14th pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select LB Ernie Sims, Florida State

Philly could go with an OT like Winston Justice here or a RB like Lendale White to add some thunder to the smaller Westbrook's lightning. I think that if Sims is available at #14 (I don't think he will be though), he'd be a no-brainer. Already a top outside 'backer prospect at the end of the season, Ernie has done nothing but impress scouts at the Combine and FSU's pro day.

Denver is on the clock at #15 as a result of their trade with Atlanta...primary needs look like RB, TE and D-line. D_B should really make this pick if possible...

RB Lendale White of USC


With the loss of Mike Anderson and Ron Dayne in free agency, coupled with Tatum Bell's disappearance towards the end of the season, the Broncos take a running back who can both slash and pound.  This guy will get 1000 yards as a rookie easily.  Because of the system, and the offensive line, it wouldn't surprise me if he's a ROY candidate. 


The Miami Dolphins are on the clock!!!!  I think we should let Phinatic take this one. 

With the 16th pick of the first round of the 2006 NFL draft, the Miami Dolphins select Eric Winston, tackle for the University of Miami.

At 6'7 and 312 pounds, Winston is a monster in the making and helps shore up a rapidly improving line for the Dolphins.  Winston is a very smart person off the field, a finance and marketing graduate (he graduated in May 2005), he's currently working on his second degree in political science.  A former all-american, Winston is fully recovered from a knee surgery from 2004.

I dunno about that.  He was coming off a major knee injury and his play during his senior year wasn't all that.  Particularly against FSU, Kameiron Wimbley made him look silly.

Thank God he doesn't have to replay the year after his serious knee injury every season for his pro career, eh?   ;)

My point being that it's to be expected for a player coming off major knee surgery to not play at the same level he did right before his surgery (which was arguably as good as any OT at the time, including D-Brick). I do think he only needed a year for that recovery process though, and feel he is the 2nd best OT prospect in this draft class.

I'd be happy as hell to see Miami get E-Winston to anchor the line...no doubt about it.

With the 17th pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the Minnesota Vikings select......

LB Manny Lawson of NC State. 

The Vikings specifically need help with a strongside linebacker on defense. The addition of Lawson could not only fill that need but help apply pressure to any opposing offenses passing attack. Lawson is your hybrid "tweener" that provides flexibility to a defense, especially one like the Vikings that run a 4-3 defense. Opposing blockers have to be aware of where he lines up along the defensive line.

With the 20th pick in the 2006 NFL draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select Tye Hill, CB, Clemson

The Chefs can use someone to play along side Surtain, and taking a speedster to fill the nickel back duties his rookie year never hurts.  Undersized but with excellent speed, Hill has the ability to turn into a starting corner, which can solidify the Chiefs' pass defense - something they haven't had for years.

RB DeAngelo Williams of Memphis State

Corey Dillon is now 31 years old and is starting to show signs of wear and tear like most running backs his age do.  Now would be the perfect time to begin grooming his replacement. 


The Denver Broncos are on the clock.  D_B is burnt out on mocks, so anyone who's interested, feel free to pick. 

With the 22nd pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos select DT Brodrick Bunkley, Florida State.

I don't think there is a snowball's chance in hell that Brodrick Bunkley slides anywhere near this far, since he came into the offseason as a top D-line prospect and has done nothing but impress at every stop since (including addressing the only real concern that most had...his size, by adding a reported 15 lbs of "good" bulk to get up to 320 lbs).  Bunkley would immediately push his way past Michael Myers to make the interior of Denver's D-line foursome (Bunkley-Warren) look almost as impressive as the outside (Pryce-Brown). If Shanahan actually came out of the first round with LenDale White and Brodrick Bunkley, then I would have to say that Denver's draft grade would be at the top of the heap. I actually think it more likely for Shanny to grab Bunkley at 15 and then end up with Maroney at 22, essentially filling the same needs. I can promise you that if Shanny picks someone other than Bunkley at 15, it won't be because he thinks Brodrick will last to #22. That would just be a gift.  ;)

It would also probably make D_B damned near intolerable...  ::)

I considered Bunkley for the Chiefs' pick at 20, but I have read so much bad things about him, saying "he's soft" and "he can get pushed around/overpowered easily"  I wouldn't be surprised if he did fall...

With the 23rd pick in the 2006 NFL draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Marcus McNeill of Auburn

I don't have a good reason for this pick other than Chuckie likes defense and Simeon Rice is old.

Then that's a good reason.  Like the Patriots picking a RB to learn under Corey Dillon.  Rice is now 32 and starting to slow down.  It's time to start grooming his replacement.

DB Ko Simpson of South Carolina

The Bengals need help in their secondary after Rothlisberger torched them in the second half of that playoff game. Safety is a particular concern where they are in dire need of someone to team with Madieu Williams. Simpson is the type who can step right in and fill that role.

They need more depth in other places. We have Dewayne White to back up Rice and Spires. Then there's McFarland, Hovan, and Wymms at the tackle position. It's going to be McNeil here, most likely. Either that or Cromartie. With Sims out, I don't think linebacker will be adressed then. The Bucs need that young OT. They've done nothing but get tackles that are really guards.

I'll happily revoke the Bucs' pick for BJL to make it.  I couldn't think of a glaring need, and will gladly bow to the better knowledge of the resident Bucs fan.

BJL, if you want to re-do the Bucs pick, do it now -- I'm sure Tommy won't mind picking again. ...and if you don't take Ko, then nothing has to change.

I won't mind at all..... but I doubt he'll take Ko Simpson.  The Bucs need help at corner, not safety.

If I had to go with someone, it would be McNeil. He's a big tackle, but he's athletic enough to play the position. Plus he was an ex-teammate of Williams. As for corner depth, I think the Bucs address that in later rounds with guys who will be there. There are a number of corners deemed good cover 2 corners, because they are not strong in man coverage.

I made the change for Tampa Bay at #23...McNeill goes to the Buccaneers and Kiwanuka goes back into the draft pool. Since it's coming up on 2 days since the previous pick, I am going ahead with the G-men's pick at #25.

With the 25th pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, The New York Football Giants select Johnathan Joseph, CB, South Carolina

The Giants four biggest needs to address in the draft are WR, OLB, DB and DT. With Holmes and Jackson off the board, I don't see a WR worth the #25. With Greenway off the board, I think New York would wait to grab a LB until round two. That leaves CB and DT, and Joseph is a much better value at #25 than the next best DT, Gabe Watson, would be. Joseph has good size for a corner at 6'0", 191 lbs, can cover well in man to man and even gives the Giants more KR/PR options. With Ko Simpson going at #24 in this mock, the Gamecocks now have back to back underclassmen selected...

You may ask why the Bears would draft another defensive player when they proved to be dominant last season on that side of the ball.  This is how a team expands their resources.  After witnessing Steve Smith singlehandedly torching their secondary in the playoffs last season, they will need every resource they can get.
