Title: Movie Review: The 40 Year Old Virgin (2005)

The 40 Year Old Virgin (2005)

Premise: A group of guys at the local electronics store do their best to get their 40-year old geek of a co-worker laid for the first time.

Rating: Very funny.

I was expecting not to like this movie, but I was surprised.  It is rude, gross at times, and relies on physical comedy, but I found it really funny.  My girlfriend was not that amused, other than watching me crack up.  I thought it had an "Office Space" vibe to it, mixed with some "Dumb and Dumber".  I found Steve Carrel very good, and thought that he carried the lead very well.  His friends and even the smaller parts of the coworkers were done well, too.  The DVD has additional footage, and I thought that at 2 hours and 15 minutes, the running time was a little long for a dummy-comedy.

I laughed out loud several times -- I can only imagine that this movie is hit and miss with people -- love it or hate it.

I was surprisingly amused also. I thought that Steve Carrel would not be that funny and was wondering how long i'd be able to tolerate watching this movie. It was great though.

I saw this movie in the theater, and then someone told me they had rented it, and I said I'd watch it. The longer DVD version is nowhere near as funny. Dave you're right that it's too long, and at parts it really drags. The theater version moved things along much more smartly. I mean they edit those parts out for a reason.

I agree that there are parts that just seem to drag on and they could have shortened the film a little. It was however very comical and a movie that I really enjoyed!!!!!

I was looking at some other movies that this reminded me of (but that I liked better), and their running times.

40-Year Old Virgin (133 minutes)
Tommy Boy (97)
Office Space (90)
Swingers (96)

These kind of buddy/silly movies can't handle a long runtime.  It definitely felt about a half-hour too long.  I wonder what the original theatrical release time was.  I'll see if I can find out.

EDIT: The original runtime was 116 minutes.
