The Simpsons announced during their Sunday show, that they'll be releasing a full length film in 2007.  Did anyone else hear about this?

I heard this. I will go see it. Great show !

I saw the preview. It spoofs Superman by showing and panning over the S symbol all close up and saying the regular trailer crap. Then it zooms out and you see it's Homer on the couch wearing a Superman shirt a size too small for him.

My thoughts on this are 'is this movie too late?' Sure they still have a big following and just signed on for 2 more years and I will go see it, but maybe they waited too long. Family Guy is back and its edgier and adult swim is huge right now. I just wonder if its really going to be that good. Im a fan, but the show isnt like it used to be.

The Simpsons have definitely lost something. I'd wager to bet that they've lost a bit of their humanity trying to make the show edgier. Some of their more recent stuff is just weird and stupid because of over the top sarcasm rather than subtle and honestly funny. There're not gonna be too many more shows which end with a kind of sweetness like the one where the sign in Homer's office (hung by Mr. Burns) which originally read "Don't forget, You're here forever!" is now covered in pictures of Maggie and reads, "Do it for her." The show has just lost that. It's too sharp and shallow nowadays. Nothing really there to sink your teeth into.

I kind of feel when a show is still running,and in syndication.It's feeels like it get's old faster...becuase all of the sudden you catch old episodes,or you can watch it 5 times a week...

I've not watched the Simpsons in close to 5 years....I think too many different writers,and people have gone in and out...so the consistancy isn't quite the same...I have no interest in watching a simpson movie now....

I would like to see it very much.

It's funny - i got the Simpsons Season 7 last month, and the shit is HILARIOUS!  It's one of my favorite shows, but you can only do it for so many years, you know.  A lot of people will watch this movie, Family Guy / Adult Swim or not.

I don't like the Family Guy to Simpsons comparison.  Honestly, I don't find them all that similar.  They are both cartoons, and Family Guy lifts the characters from the Simpsons pretty much, but the humor is a different style.  Family Guy is a faster paced, more offensive, shocking laugh.  ...the Simpsons has deeper characters, and their episodes are a lot more heartfealt.

I agree that the show has lost something over the years, though.

...just bugs me when someone is so quick to point out that Family Guy is better.

I'll wait for the DVD release...maybe. I may not even bother. I love The Simpsons, but not enough to pay to see it.

The point wasn't to say that Family Guy is 'better' as it is different. But its that 'different' that I am referring to. I understand they have to try to keep their original target audience, but as we grow up over the last 15yrs or whatever, our tastes changed. The show, i feel, didnt make that transition cuz they want to keep the same target audience. They want to grab those same kids while they are the age we were when it all began.

The problem with that is these kids are growing up in a different world also. And I think those kids are different then us and therefore need different shows than we did. Since they didnt change into shows like Family Guy, with the faster edgier stuff, that they wont have the same box office draw they could have had only a few years ago.

Im not saying i wont watch it, i just think they could have made more money, maybe a better movie, if they caught all of us earlier. 

I'd be the first to admit that Family Guy is absolute class, so much so that i bought the 3 Series on DVD.

But The Simpsons will always be number 1 for me, and yeah Family Guy has been excellent so far in its 3 Series and Movie (Quagmire is a legend), but what you have to remember is that the Simpsons has been consistently excellent since, i think it was 1987 when it was first aired?

I'm not sayin it was brilliant from Day one, but certainly you could credit it with 15 years of excellence.

I do agree that the Simpsons more recent episodes have seemed as though they writers were slightly pressed for a storyline, and i think it would be a nice way to bow out with one last extra long episode (Movie).

It's not the actual words, but the person it's coming from.  I just want to make sure, are you basically saying the Simpsons "never sold out" to what's hip and popular, hence their slide over the years?  Had they "made the transition", would you have hated the Simpsons for trying to be like everyone else?

There is a difference between 'selling out' and 'growing up' with your core audience. There is also a difference between 'us' as kids and 'todays youth'. They could have made some subtle changes to move forward without 'selling out'. 

The best example i can give is when we are all hanging out and someone remembers a good Simpson scene or line from the show. They are easily all older episodes. Very rarely do we say something from the episode last sunday night.

Release date is July 27, 2007. I'll go see it.

This is because most people don't watch the new episodes regularly, while we've all seen the older episodes over and over on syndication.

Yes, i know. My point exactly. I mean, i watch the new ones every weekend out of loyalty, but thats just me.
