The “Virtua Fighter” series debuted in arcades in 1993 and gave gamers a true 3D look at fighting that they’d not yet seen.  The series hit its high mark in 2001 when “Virtua Fighter 4” was released.  Aside from typical updates to balance, graphics, and gameplay, VF4 introduced fighting stances to the series.  This allowed another aspect of style for players, as choosing your stance would affect damage, combos, and speed.  This depth of gameplay won the hearts of gamers and critics alike, placing Virtua Fighter 4 among the list of all-time best fighting games.

Evil boss King K. Rool was in for a gorilla of a surprise in 1994, when Super Nintendo and RareWare released Donkey Kong Country in 1994. Not only was DK Country one of the first ever 3-D console games, it featured an award-winning soundtrack that sold thousands of copies throughout the United States.  Donkey Kong Country led the charge for pre-teens and youth video game enthusiasts in the early to mid 90’s.

DKC got me into 16 bit gaming.  Rare used 3D models to create their sprites, and they looked great.  I played that game so much around Christmas that I dreamed about it.  Strangely, no girls would talk to me at the time.

As much as i liked Vitua Fighter, DKC was a break through in 16 bit graphics, w/ their use of 3D rendered characters. The visuals of this game were awesome, especially stoned, and I always liked the ability to switch between Diddy and Donkey. But the Mine Cart madness level was the most fun I've had w/ a monkey since Tijuana. :o

I didn't like DKC at all.  I didn't like Virtua Fighter either.

Can we add an abstain option?

DKC has one of the coolest storyline's ever... seeing Cranky Kong sitting there as the ape who went up against Mario in the original Donkey Kong, and insisting that a good game has a joystick and one button. 

I got my Xbox Chipped, along with a Super Nintendo emulator installed just to play Donkey Kong on a Widescreen with Surround sound! (Along with some other classic SNES games)

     Virtua Fighter gets my vote.  Spent a lot of hours in the arcade, playing Virtua Fighter 4.  Great game!

i hope virtua fighter isn't representing all of the fighting games.....that would be a travesty.  because killer instinct, street fighter, and of course, mortal kombat still reign supreme in my book

as far as DK - that game blew the doors off the video game industry at the time.  beautiful landscapes, etc....who woulda think superNES coulda pulled those graphix off?  the gameplay and plot are also great, and like they mentioned above, the soundtrack is killer

No, VF4 doesn't represent all fighting games.  We've already listed Soul Calibur on here, as well...it must've dropped to the 2nd page.

There are several fighting games, but they won't all be listed.  While MK, MK2, MK3, and even MK4 were all great games, they won't all be appearing.  As for which games we chose from a particular series, it mostly dealt with which games were the most polished, and which ones took the biggest steps the best.

I admit,After playing DKC,they had already announced the N64.I asked Why? look at how awsome this game looks,I thought it was awsome,and why they didn't make more games like this....they could have rode the SNES longer,if they would have produced more games like DKC on it...

Good idea - there's so many game sequels that you'd need a bracket of 128 to get everyone included.

I'm surprised that this is that close.  I know that the VF series is popular, but I thought that DKC would blow it away...shows what I know.
