Title: TDMMC: VGB - Round 1 (Street Fighter 2 vs. The Legend of Zelda) ***OVERTIME*** Post by: jtex316 on April 14, 2006, 08:12:46 pm Part of the TDMMC: VGB - http://www.thedolphinsmakemecry.com/forums/index.php/topic,9228.0.html
Activision Bracket Street Fighter 2 – The World Warrior (1990, Arcade) Capcom (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a9/Street_Fighter_2.png) Street Fighter 2 – The World Warrior was the sequel to the very popular Street Fighter game. For one of the first times in history, two players could face each other in a fighting style game, or 1 player could take on the CPU. The game was so popular that CapCom decided to remake the game, which exploded its popularity and sales in the early 90’s, making it one of the most played games in North America of all-time. Street Fighter 2 has since spawned several remakes, re-releases, and led the way for every game of its kind, including Virtua Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and others. VS. The Legend of Zelda (1986, Nintendo) Nintendo (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/3a/Legend_of_Zelda_NES.PNG) From the same creators as the Mario franchise, The Legend of Zelda attained unimaginable fame and status, quickly becoming one of Nintendo’s premier games, even further molding the face of video game history. Zelda’s opening theme song is still used as the franchise lead-in song to this very day, and its storyline, while altered and added onto over the years, remains basically the same. Link, a young man / boy, is destined to save the land of Hyrule from the imminent doom of evil warlord Gannondorf, who has kidnapped princess Zelda. Link must crawl through 8 dungeons, collect items, and uncover several different secrets and puzzles to rid the world of this diabolical mastermind. Street Fighter II had an extremely significant impact on my life. I met the large majority of my current friends at arcades playing Street Fighter II in high school. I spent most of my late teens/early 20s traveling to tournaments for Street Fighter (and related games). If that game had never been released, I can honestly say that my life today would be drastically different. Title: Re: TDMMC: VGB - Round 1 (Street Fighter 2 vs. The Legend of Zelda) Post by: jtex316 on April 14, 2006, 09:09:17 pm Me too, actually.
I was 10 when SF 2 came out. When it came out, I wanted to be the best player in the world. By age 11, I was regularly beating adults. By age 13, I felt as if I was invincible with the "Ken" character - and still feel this to this very day. I carefully perfected my craft, and spent countless hours a day playing it to get to that level. The feeling of complete dominance and achieving a level of mastery and excellence by complete dedication shaped my life as well to this very day. Had I not engorged months and months at playing Street Fighter 2, my life and / or values may have been seriously altered in the present. Title: Re: TDMMC: VGB - Round 1 (Street Fighter 2 vs. The Legend of Zelda) Post by: Dave Gray on April 14, 2006, 09:19:31 pm I'm so on the fence here....Zelda is the best of the best...but Street Fighter lived on way past its time, and there's never really been a better game for fighting. Street Fighter's graphics don't really age, either, since it's sort of cartoony. Both of these are great games...ones I'd expect to make it to the final 8 if they weren't in direct competition.
Title: Re: TDMMC: VGB - Round 1 (Street Fighter 2 vs. The Legend of Zelda) Post by: Brian Fein on April 14, 2006, 09:22:50 pm I figured Zelda would take this in a landslide.
SF2 was never a friend of mine, I was always a MK fan. I always hated SF2, mostly cause I sucked at it. Title: Re: TDMMC: VGB - Round 1 (Street Fighter 2 vs. The Legend of Zelda) Post by: Frimp on April 14, 2006, 10:09:03 pm SF2.
I will whoop ANYONE's ass at that game. Title: Re: TDMMC: VGB - Round 1 (Street Fighter 2 vs. The Legend of Zelda) Post by: cyan on April 15, 2006, 12:30:23 am SF2...i have a story similar to J-Tex's...i started playing as soon as it hit the arcades here in late 1992 or early 1993...i was between 10 and 12 years old...when i went on vacation to colorado in the winter of '93, i immediately went to the hotel arcade as soon as i saw it, popped in a quarter (it was only $.25 to play SF2 then) and played for the first 4-5 hours we were on vacation...On that 1 quarter. i had a bunch of college guys that came into the arcade about 15 minutes after i got there...i was in the middle of the 1-player mode when they joined in...and my chun-li was so strong back then that i was able to play without losing for the entire time. these guys could not believe they were getting it so severely handed to them by a 12 year old. out of the 100 or so matches we played, i probably had perfect victories in at least 15-25 rounds.
recently, especially with the release of SF3 on the dreamcast and SF Anniversary edition on PS2 i starting playing more and more with Ken to the point where my friend (who has used ken his entire life in every single game containing the Ken character, and is a few years older than me) can no longer beat me when we both use Ken... If only SF Anniversary was playable online...we'd be setting up matches right now. Title: Re: TDMMC: VGB - Round 1 (Street Fighter 2 vs. The Legend of Zelda) Post by: jtex316 on April 15, 2006, 09:35:03 am Have you guys ever seen someone be awesome with Balrog? This one older guy was freaking amazing with him, way back in the day when I lived in Brazil. Yes, Balrog, it was fun to watch...almost made Balrog look like TJ Combo from Killer Instinct.
P.S. I will whoop Frimp & Cyan's ass, Chun-Li or not. Title: Re: TDMMC: VGB - Round 1 (Street Fighter 2 vs. The Legend of Zelda) Post by: Frimp on April 15, 2006, 12:41:31 pm I got good at that game when the first one came out, and the only player you could be was Ryu. I stuck with him.
Jtex, do you know of a place that has the game in Miami? We could set up matches when I'm down for the next hot wing party...Probably for the Dolphins/Vikings game. ...A challenge has been issued. ;D Title: Re: TDMMC: VGB - Round 1 (Street Fighter 2 vs. The Legend of Zelda) Post by: Spider-Dan on April 15, 2006, 01:36:20 pm Online play is a reality. There's an arcade emulator called MAME that has online play enabled:
http://www.anti3d.com/dl/mame32k0.64en.zip Once you grab that, you can download the ROMs to plug in. I have the ROM files for SF2: Champion Edition, SF2: Turbo, Super SF2 and Super SF2 Turbo (just send me a PM). From that point, it's pretty easy to set up an online match. Just go to File -> Play Network Game, pick the same server, and start the game. BTW, thought I'd link a few match videos from YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/results?search=super+turbo+matches&search_type=search_videos&search=Search There are some Balrog matches in there. If I ever come out to Miami for a Dolphins game, we'll definitely have to play some SF while I'm out there. Title: Re: TDMMC: VGB - Round 1 (Street Fighter 2 vs. The Legend of Zelda) Post by: Frimp on April 15, 2006, 01:47:39 pm I don't trust those free download/plug ins.

Title: Re: TDMMC: VGB - Round 1 (Street Fighter 2 vs. The Legend of Zelda) Post by: jtex316 on April 15, 2006, 05:32:41 pm I do not know anywhere with a stand-up arcade machine with SF2. This one bowling center used to be the last one and they kept it in there forever...then the 2004 hurricane destroyed the center.
Bowling centers, IMO, have some of the best arcade games. Regular arcades only have whatever game is the latest and popular. Title: Re: TDMMC: VGB - Round 1 (Street Fighter 2 vs. The Legend of Zelda) Post by: bsfins on April 15, 2006, 06:36:41 pm Arcades...I mean...you still have arcades?...I saw a multiplay machine at the bus station...but that was the only place I even saw a video game...

Most games charge between 50 cents to sometimes as much as $3. Even the combined Galaga/Ms Pac Man game is now 50 cents. Title: Re: TDMMC: VGB - Round 1 (Street Fighter 2 vs. The Legend of Zelda) Post by: DolFan619 on April 15, 2006, 09:52:43 pm Street Fighter 2 gets my vote. I actually have Street Fighter for my Playstation 2 and still play it to this day. Ryu rules!

Title: Re: TDMMC: VGB - Round 1 (Street Fighter 2 vs. The Legend of Zelda) Post by: GUATARICCAN on April 16, 2006, 12:34:37 pm Zelda didn't wow me until SNES with Link to the past. SF2 was my life blood in middle school. 2 kids and I would run that machine at Don Carter's on fridays, god I miss those days. Also I think this is one of the, if not, the first fighting game to use special moves, like the fireball or Ryu's super uppercut.

On video game websites, I'd expect Zelda to roll, but here, I thought we kind of had the fighting-game type of crowd. Though I voted for SF2, I can't complain. Zelda is also the bomb.

It pains me to say this, but I liked SF2 as well. Both games would've gone very far in this tournament if they had not had to face each other in the first round.
