Title: TDMMC: VGB - Round 1 (World of Warcraft vs. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron) Post by: jtex316 on April 17, 2006, 11:19:00 pm Square Bracket
World of Warcraft (2004, PC) Blizzard Entertainment (http://pcmedia.gamespy.com/pc/image/article/571/571585/world-of-warcraft-20041207053213664-000.jpg) The 4th release of the Warcraft franchise met fans with great anticipation, and even greater success. WoW, as it’s abbreviated, is an online role-playing game, where players gain experience and items across several different realms, hosted on servers across the globe. WoW is also highly regarded as the most popular RPG game in the history of gaming, with over 6 million active online subscriptions as of 03/2006. (Source: The New York Times). VS. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron (1998, Nintendo 64) LucasArts (http://www.contactmusic.com/new/home.nsf/Lookup/wars5x03x04x02xgr/$file/wars5x03x04x02xgr.jpg) “Rogue Squadron†was one of the first N64 games to get a graphical boost from the console’s optional expansion pak. It had several unlockables, including the Naboo N-1 Starfighter, password protected so carefully, that it was not discovered until it was released at the Episode I movie’s launch. It was the Origins Award for Best Action Computer Game of 1998, and was well received by video game fans and Star Wars fans alike. It’s detailed landscapes of popular Star Wars terrain, excellent control, and visual presence, make “Star Wars: Rogue Squadron†stand out as a fantastic overall game. And I haven't really played SW:RS either so do I just not vote or go w/ Star Wars just cause I played it once or twice.

I don't understand the point. There is no goal, it seems. Rogue Squadron was cool, and dogfight games are always cool. Title: Re: TDMMC: VGB - Round 1 (World of Warcraft vs. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron) Post by: YoFuggedaboutit on April 18, 2006, 08:23:13 am Rogue Squadron!!!! Where's our cover???
Title: Re: TDMMC: VGB - Round 1 (World of Warcraft vs. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron) Post by: Fau Teixeira on April 18, 2006, 09:26:51 am i liked rogue squadron .. but WoW is the best game ever made in the history of games .. what sets it apart from other mmorpg's (massively multiplayer online rpgs) is that it's so fun to play .. blizzard (star craft, diablo) really goes out of their way to make a really seamless and fun game to play .. they are an A+ development studio and WoW is their best effort.
I have no interest in Online RPGs. None. Zero. Zilch. I don't understand the point. There is no goal, it seems. that's consistent with the genre .. the "point" of the game changes every time you play .. the typical game cycle goes like this: you make a character (level 1) the "point" is to level your character to 60 (max level right now) you can do this by killing critters by exploring the world and by completing quests. Quests can range from as simple as fishing up some trout (yes you can fish in the game) to running down a character a couple of areas away in a specific time limit to killing a set number of creatures to a bunch of stuff in between during this time you can explore dungeons, group with other people, and form raids of up to 40 people all playing together once you ge tto level 60 your need to level up is gone and you can use your playing time to do tradeskills .. talk with people .. gather up coins and buy stuff .. gather up faction with different areas of the game .. or you can join a guild (group of players) and do raid level content .. usually areas that are built around 40 people all playing together .. in order to get better stuff and to get to the next instance of raid content In alot of console games, you have the goal of "beating the game" in WoW as in all mmorpgs .. there is no such thing .. you play to accomplish transitory goals .. one day you may be wanting to get level 37 .. the next you may want to complete this quest so you can get a new axe .. the next you may want to gather a bunch of silk so you can raise up your tailoring skill .. and so on and so forth and you can always make a new character on the same or a different server (world) that will let you play the game from a completely different perspective .. also the game is split into 2 factions ( alliance and horde ) .. they do not communicate, they cannot play together .. but that's when the player vs. player aspect of the game comes into play and you use your "stuff" and fight it out with other players from the opposing faction in counterstrike-like battlegrounds .. some of the games are familiar .. like CTF or even an onslaught like game kinda reminiscent of unreal tournament 2004 so in conclusion best .. game .. ever Title: Re: TDMMC: VGB - Round 1 (World of Warcraft vs. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron) Post by: jtex316 on April 18, 2006, 10:49:05 am Nerd.

I totally recognize this game (and the MMORPG genre) as good things, and important, but I just have trouble liking them myself. Such is also the case with traditional RPGs. I prefer a "motor skills based" combat system in my games. ...something where you push a button to get a result. Also, the "leveling-up" aspect of games has never interested me, which is probably why I never cared for the Final Fantasy series.
The concept of the games, and the customization of your character sounds really cool, though. I like things like that, and the idea of the open-endedness...but I need a little more structure. Different strokes for different folks, I suppose. |
