Title: TDMMC: VGB - Round 1 (Mike Tyson's Punch Out vs. Maniac Mansion) Post by: jtex316 on April 18, 2006, 11:41:59 pm Capcom Bracket
Mike Tyson’s Punch Out (1987, Nintendo) Nintendo (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d3/NES_Punch_Out.png) Little Max is a up and coming boxing prospect, working his way up to the top of the professional ranks of pugilists. You control Max, and help him reach the top, and become the champion!! This sequel to the original arcade version, “Punch Outâ€, met Nintendo owners and fans alike with open arms. This was also the first ever console video game to be endorsed by a professional athlete, and to bear his name in the title. It’s easy play and colorful characters made Mike Tyson’s Punch Out an instant classic. VS. Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle (1993, PC) LucasArts (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d5/Dottscreen.png) Before focusing almost solely on Star Wars games, Lucasarts made a slew of great point-and-click adventures in the late 80s and early 90s. Games like “Sam & Max Hit the Roadâ€, “Grim Fandango†and the “Monkey Island†series are all great, but arguably the best of this genre was the second game in the “Maniac Mansion†series, “Day of the Tentacleâ€. Extremely clever and well thought-out, the game played with time travel, allowing the actions of characters in the past to change history, affecting your players in the future. This great concept, mixed in with the backdrop of our colonial time and the founding fathers juxtaposed with a future where alien tentacles ruled the Earth, made Maniac Mansion a wonderful game from top to bottom. I'm looking for "Grim Fandango" on torrents now. I hear it's great. Day of the Tentacle was one of the most clever adventure games I'd ever played.
However, I chose Mike Tyson's Punch Out!! I spent too much time playing it to let it go down in the first round. I also played Super Punch Out on SNES and recently played Wade Hixton's Counter Punch on GBA (a similar title). I probably can still beat Tyson. 007-373-5963 Title: Re: TDMMC: VGB - Round 1 (Mike Tyson's Punch Out vs. Maniac Mansion) Post by: GUATARICCAN on April 19, 2006, 04:16:25 pm God you remember the password too! Is Day of the Tentacle even better? It always seemed a little more like a goofy cartoon than a puzzle to me. But I really didn't give it much of a chance.

[SPOILER] One puzzle I remember about the game: There were three characters - 1) A metalhead fat guy in colonial times. 2) A revenge of the nerds-style geek in the present. 3) An airhead, ditzy blone in the future, which has been taken over by tentacle aliens. There is a point in the game where the girl in the future can't get past a patroling alien, because she looks human, obviously. She keeps getting caught and placed in a doctor's waiting room (for aliens). She then steals the alien anatomy chart off the wall. She sends it back in time to the fat guy. He takes the chart and swaps them with Betsy Ross' flag plans, which changes the future. In the present, the nerd climbs the flagpole and gets the tentacle-looking flag, which he sends to the future to the girl, so that she can wear it as a disguise. I also liked that the adventure changed depending on the friends you chose. There were several ways to win the game, which was a new thing to me. Couldn't have said it better myself. My two most formidable opponents were the second Bald Bull (because you had to uppercut him to knock him down), and Super Macho Man (you didn't know how many spin punches he was gonna throw after you knocked him down). |
