Title: TDMMC: VGB - Round 1 (Resident Evil 4 vs. Tennis)
Post by: Dave Gray on April 20, 2006, 01:55:13 pm
Square Bracket:

Resident Evil 4 (2005, Multi)
Capcom

Prior to “RE4”, the “Resident Evil” series was a “love it or hate it” franchise, due to its limiting control scheme.  …now, it’s just a “love it”.  Moving away from its slow-paced, fixed camera system, “Resident Evil 4” wowed critics and fans, as it took home Gamespot’s Game of the Year honors for 2005.  Now more action based, with fast-moving villains and a unique “over the shoulder” aiming system, “Resident Evil 4” is completely different than any game before it.  The graphics in motion are phenomenal, and the extra mini-games that add value after the main quest is completed solidify it as one of the best video game experiences ever.

VS.

Tennis (1985, Nintendo)
Nintendo

Perhaps the most basic concept for a tennis game ever made, the original “Tennis” for NES might be the best, despite its simplicity.  It allowed for 2 player simultaneous cooperative or competitive play. The control scheme allowed for a regular shot or a lob, and depending on how you timed your hit, would send the ball flying anywhere, including long out of bounds.  While this may seem like no big deal, no other tennis games did this at the time, limiting your power to stay in the court.  What made tennis such a big deal was its amazingly unique physics, that took in to consideration timing and player speed.  While many tennis games have come after it, with fancy graphics and complicated, in-depth control, none have had the impact of the original.

I'm voting for RE4 only because its the best Splinter Cell representative in the braackets.

(I know its not Splinter Cell, but the gameplay style is similar)

Tennis was fun, but its gotta go.

Actually, Brian, Resident Evil 4 is way different that the others in the series.  It's one of the best games I've ever played.  You should pick it up...it's super dope.  It's not similar to Splinter Cell anymore, like the series used to be.  It's not a shooter like Halo either, but it's moved closer to that.

Does it exist for xbox?  I'd love to pick it up but I thought the RE franchise got bought out by Nintendo and was limited to GameCube.

I've been a huge fan od the RE series since the original.  I have played thru Nemesis on PSX and tried Silent Hill on xbox, but it just wasn't the same...

Resident Evil took a turn for the worse with the last few games.  RE4 is out on Gamecube and PS2.  It really is completely different than the ones before it though....it's not even the same genre, really.

:(

I just checked GameStop real quick - Since I don't have GC or PS2, I can't see myself playing it no matter how awesome it looks... :(

Resident Evil's never been anything like Splinter Cell in my opinion.

Like Splinter Cell??  Not really, but I know where Brian is coming from.  You've got a gun, and you shoot stuff, but it's not really an action game.   It's more slow paced and smart than guns a' blazin.  ...at least I think that's what he means.

Pretty much, yeah, plus the third-person and the over-the-shoulder aiming and "flying camera" views, etc.

Not so much the stealth and mission objectives part of it.

Wow, "Tennis" is actually competing with RE4.  I thought this would be a runaway,  odd.

Xbox whoops all those other systems hardware wise and the game quality is always better on the Xbox version. Halo is awesome. What does PS2 and GC have games wise that can match?

Completely off topic, but if we're going to get into a system wars contest, I'll explain what I have and why it works for me.

I started off with a Gamecube for many reasons:
1) I don't normally buy the first console to launch in a new generation (especially right away).  I didn't buy SNES for a while, PS1 was out long before I got the N64, and PS2 was already released.
2) I'm a fan(boy) of the big 4 series: Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Zelda.
3) It was cheaper than the other 2 systems.

Then, after playing XBOX, I shelled out the full price, because I had to have Halo.  ...just had to.  I couldn't believe how awesome that game was, and it was the sole reason I bought the console (I talked myself into it for a bunch of other reasons, but Halo was it.)  Plus, Gamecube makes great games, but they have crappy 3rd party support and they don't have enough variety for the kind of violent games that I like.

PS2 had the GTA series, and I considered picking up one just for that, and I had somewhat of an interest in playing the Metal Gear games.  I didn't however, want anything to do with Final Fantasy, which was a big system seller at the time.  When it was announced that XBOX and PC were getting the GTAs, I was done.

The only thing I lack is some fighting games and role playing, which I'm not really into, so it works out.  The XBOX/GameCube combo is the best for me.

Too many to list,  but as a gamer I don't latch on to just ONE system.  If there are great games out there I usually get that platform to immerse myself in the goodness.  Systems like N64 and Dreamcast didn't last long for (obvious) reasons.  Which is why I never purchased them (just like Xbox).  As for Xbox,  the only reason it lives and is still living is because of Xbox live, 'cause most "good" games you find on it you can find on PS2.  Halo, multiplayer is all it has,  and,  it's nothing new (to me).  But I'm not hating on ya'll,  you gotta play with what ya got.

I too have the Gamecube and Xbox. I was thinking about buying Dead or Alive 4, I played a demo and thought it was really cool, also you can fight w/ people on line . one on one, or if they're Mexican Juan on Juan. :P

I feel you, but of most multi platform games out there, Xbox always has the better version. Be it GTA or SW: Battlefronts 2.  I've played both versions on PS2 and they were pratically similar but the Xbox had the edge on the graphics.

Stupid question.... is it even fair to compare the capabilities of the XBOX versus the PS2?  I mean the PS2 came out an entire before the XBOX!  I would EXPECT the XBOX to have better graphics.  I expect the PS3 to trump the XBOX360 simply because they will have had a year to realign to a market that is 1 year more mature than when the 360 came out.

Typical PS2 owners' response... ::)  This is jealousy - its not a bad thing. :D

Actually I'm a PC gamer.  So I've seen the best.  Halo isn't it. (and I've played Halo)  ::)

So be it.  Its not for everyone, I guess.  I'll say that Halo on XBOX and Halo on PC are two different animals, but its all good! :)

I doubt the PS3 will trump the 360. But, I see your point about it being out longer.

Hey Brian,

I just saw that Resident Evil 4 is being released this week for PC.  I don't know how the port will turn out, but at least you'll be able to play it.
