Stop typing in "ludacris", unless you like to "act a fool".

Jtex, don't even get me started on how poorly people spell.  I learned to write in three languages, they can't master one?

Some of my favorites:

Your a jerk.

They're hair was on fire.

I went too the supermarket.

Were did you go last night?

Last night we went out and looked at car's.

Pardon me for the error. I was going to spell check but figured that you would catch it, if it was misspelled.  ::)

People are lazy, and have no pride in their spelling.

I am only lazy when i am at work. Otherwise i am a ball of fire...

JVides...as a former copy editor (and multi-lingual), I definitely feel your pain.  I read through a lot of the posts on this and other boards, and I just want to gouge my eyes out sometimes. The only thing I've found that helps me deal with the general illiteracy of America is to keep myself heavily sedated at all times.  :-\

One of the biggest gaps in my education is my monolingualism. While I can usually read Spanish and some rather rudimentary Latin, I'm pretty much locked in to English and English-only. It really sucks and is one of my biggest insecurities, especially when you come across someone who can switch and mix and match quickly, accurately, and with ease. It's a great skill to have.

One disagreement that I have with people like Sunstroke and JVides is that I believe standardization of spelling to be overrated. Yeah, sure, it makes things much more efficient and easier, but it also really limits some of the freedom and playfulness that's rooted into the DNA of the language itself. Standardization makes English more like Latin than actual English... but, that's the tradeoff I guess.

I am all for a little spelling flexibility when it's being used to express a little flava. Groovy little colloquialisms...bring them on! Ebonics? ...pardon me, stewardess...I speak jive! What JVides was talking about that I raised the "Hallelujiah" cry in support of was:

IMO, these aren't so much flava-adaptations as they are just plain language laziness.  ;)

Look, I'm fine with playing with words (or being lazy with editing or with spell check) on a message board, or when texting your buds or whatever, but spelling and grammar deficiencies extend to highly paid, highly educated professionals, too.  For example:

I once received an e-mail from a fellow board member (she's a highly paid professional in the financial field) at my condo association in which she stated that she was "copulating a list of items"...and I'm left with the mental image of her trying to somehow screw a list.  I'm sure she ment compile.

Another time, one of my (former) supervisors sent an e-mail to all store managers (my pre-edumacation job) saying that "mediocracy would not be tolerated."  Again, he meant mediocrity, but I'm left thinking:  he doesn't want mediocre work, but announces it by sending an e-mail with mediocre (well, flat out bad) English.

Nah, I just notice that Brian says it a lot.

And Scar Man says "your", instead of "you are".

And someone else says "know" instead of "now".

Another one that I see frequently is "noone" instead of "no one"

I know, I'm bad about that.  I usually correct it when I catch it, but its force of habit.

Brian also says that Denver sucks, so take it with a grain of salt.... :D

I think my spelling and vocabulary are just fine... The area where I get lazy on these boards...is in the punctuation, particularly my old pal... the ellipsis... I tend to write like I am speaking when posting here...and I abuse the ellipse as a means to convey a pregnant pause. I shouldn't do that...but I just can't help it...my bad...  :P

As many times as I've ignored a misspelling or incorrect word usage from "most" of this board's members...and I get slapped here on one?

You've gotta be fukkin' kidding me!

It seems as though, with all the mistakes, the spelling standards don't really mean much after all.

Oh, and 'Stroke, I feel you on the ellipsis. My bane is the comma, and the semi-colon. I can never figure out whether or not to use one or the other when it comes to how I connect two independent clauses. (i.e. Should I use the ol' conjunction-plus-comma, or go straight semi-colon... ahh, the issues of English majors.)

I probably mis-spell a word every now and then. And, I probably misuse the comma as well.

I think you use the semi-colon where you could use the 'and' conjunction... but I may be wrong.

I, too, use ellipsis way too often.

Sort of...a semi-colon is used where the 'and' conjuction is often misused in run-on sentences.  It's basically the "and" when you're using 2 seperate but related thoughts.

Man, this reminds me of old high school times.  My little brother was two years behind me and a complete opposite of me.  He was a headbanger and I was a hip-hopper. 

Y-100 plays an even mix of music so they might play Metallica.
