Title: Spanish Star Spangled Banner? Post by: Brian Fein on April 28, 2006, 06:46:56 pm There's a big hub-bub down here tonight about some people wanting to create a Spanish version of the national anthem, the Star Spangled Banner.
http://www2.wsvn.com/news/articles/local/MI19472/ Apparently, according to that article, I'm not the only one who thinks that's BS. Here's the song translated to English: http://www2.wsvn.com/news/articles/extra/MI19541/ What do you think? Title: Re: Spanish Star Spangled Banner? Post by: Frimp on April 28, 2006, 07:02:45 pm I think that all these illegal aliens and people who support them (like the artists who collaborated on this "song" AND 90% of Congress and the Senate) are making a mockery of our laws, and giving the finger to immigrants who are here legally.
I hope that every one of them who protest on Monday lose their damn jobs for not showing up for work. This is a disgrace. Title: Re: Spanish Star Spangled Banner? Post by: jtex316 on April 28, 2006, 07:58:28 pm I couldn't care less. The Star Spangled Banner is the national anthem of the United States of America. If people want to translate it to Spanish, French, Korean, or Klingon...that's fine by me.Â
Everyone is welcome to sing the praises of the greatest country of them all. Title: Re: Spanish Star Spangled Banner? Post by: jtex316 on April 28, 2006, 08:01:26 pm But, I DO care if they're going to clog up traffic and run a stupid protest, which will inevitably result in assaulting police officers and destroying public property. You're allowed to hold a public protest, but it has to be in a civil manner that doesn't disrupt anyone else.
Translate the song, but don't cause trouble. Title: Re: Spanish Star Spangled Banner? It doesn't look translated to me. It looks like a completely different song. That's the problem I have with it. Title: Re: Spanish Star Spangled Banner? Post by: CF DolFan on April 28, 2006, 08:52:25 pm I'm curious ... how many other countries allow immigrants to change their country to fit them? It seems to me if you want to come here you should at least be willing to 1) speak/learn the language and 2) accept the laws, cultures and traditions already established there.
I realize there are many spanish speaking people who have come to the United States so it is beneficial for businesses to have Spanish speaking people but it drives me crazy when those same people don't recognize that they need to learn to speak english or that english is the language of "our" country. Title: Re: Spanish Star Spangled Banner? Post by: jtex316 on April 28, 2006, 09:26:16 pm Quote how many other countries allow immigrants to change their country to fit them? None. The United States was built on allowing immigrants to come from abroad and shape this country to the way it is today. It's just history repeating itself. Title: Re: Spanish Star Spangled Banner? Post by: Frimp on April 28, 2006, 09:44:57 pm None. The United States was built on allowing immigrants to come from abroad and shape this country to the way it is today. It's just history repeating itself. LEGAL immigrants. Not fence jumping trespassers. These people do not give a shit about being an American. They are flicking off our laws. They are already CRIMINALS. Now, they want amnesty, and citizenship. This march they have planned for Monday is nothing more than a slap in the face. Wake up! Title: Re: Spanish Star Spangled Banner? Our anthem is suddenly beyond translation? Much more historically important things have been translated (Bible, Anyone? Anyone?), and we don't seem to mind. They're taking creative license, and that's their choice. I won't be SINGING the anthem in Spanish anytime soon, or ever, mind you, but I really don't see what the big to do is all about. Because those are the proper words to the song and because English is our national language. People that immigrate to this country should learn English, but many of them don't. I have no problem with them speaking their native tongues in addition to English. But many of them come here instead demanding that we change things to accommodate their lack of English speech. IMO, this is just another example of that. It needs to be translated to Spanish so they can understand it without learning English. But worse than that, it wasn't even properly translated. And no, it's not just translation difficulty. It's not even close. I don't expect it to translate perfectly, but it should be close. The fact that it isn't suggests that it's deliberately inaccurate. It's a mockery. That mockery is particularly evident in the last line: Tell me! Does its starry beauty still wave above the land of the free, the sacred flag? In a free country, the artists who recorded it can do what they want. However, we are also allowed to criticize. These people are using this in defiance of our country. No comprende English? Fine --- but don't expect us to accommodate you by spending money to print all of our signs and government documents in Spanish. And don't call me a racist when I go into a store, and leave pissed off when I can't find anyone in the store to tell me if they have any dried habaneros in stock. Will there be a music video for it on MTV? There could put in some clips of the illegals sneaking under the fence. Just keepin' it real, as they say in the rap world. This is a slap in the face to We The People, and all our government sees is more people to tax and more votes. Title: Re: Spanish Star Spangled Banner? This is a slap in the face to We The People, and all our government sees is more people to tax and more votes. This is the main reason I left Miami (with traffic and high gas and insurance prices being secondary). Due to my inability to speak Spanish and unwillingness to learn it, I could not find a job. Everywhere I went, they wanted someone who was bi-lingual. To me, that is a form of discrimination. Title: Re: Spanish Star Spangled Banner? Post by: Dave Gray on April 28, 2006, 10:47:04 pm Everywhere I went, they wanted someone who was bi-lingual. To me, that is a form of discrimination. A language is a skill. It's not discrimination, any more than not hiring someone who doesn't speak English is discrimination. This song is paying homage to America. It's not dissing it. This whole illegal alien thing is hyprocritical. People just don't like Mexicans. Nobody is flipping out when Canadiens drive South. Title: Re: Spanish Star Spangled Banner? I like Mexicans just fine...Legal ones. There aren't 22 million illegal Canadiens here demanding citizenship either. Title: Re: Spanish Star Spangled Banner? Post by: Dave Gray on April 29, 2006, 12:42:38 am Because those are the proper words to the song and because English is our national language. Actually, I don't believe this to be true. We don't have a national language, to my understanding. Title: Re: Spanish Star Spangled Banner? Post by: Frimp on April 29, 2006, 12:51:43 am Actually, I don't believe this to be true. We don't have a national language, to my understanding. Just looked it up, and you're right. However, every single US document is English. So, I'll ask a different question...Why are you for allowing these people to break the law? Title: Re: Spanish Star Spangled Banner? Post by: Dave Gray on April 29, 2006, 02:57:32 am Why are you for allowing these people to break the law? I don't think that singing a Spanish language version of the Star Spangled Banner is breaking the law. I know what you're saying though. Laws are able to be reformed and I think that this is a good case. I have several friends who are contributing members to society (many whom have been here since they were young) but have questionable legal status. Calling them criminals is like calling you a criminal for going over the speed limit on your way home from work. These are real people just like you and I, and they want a chance at a better life. You just happen to be born on the other side of a fence. Title: Re: Spanish Star Spangled Banner? Post by: run_to_win on April 29, 2006, 04:47:22 am This song is paying homage to America. It's not dissing it. If only!According to the translators on the radio today the additional background lyrics allegedly seem to be calling for latinos to join together.... almost as if calling for a revolt or overthrow. Had they translated it straight up, or as close as possible considering the language differences, and not politicized it, then you'd be right. Title: Re: Spanish Star Spangled Banner? Post by: EDGECRUSHER on April 29, 2006, 05:00:41 am F these people. You come here illegally, crawling through barbed wire and water because your country sucks so bad and then you have the nerve to tell US what to do? Go change your own corrupt government if it's so intolerable.
The Muslims are doing the same shit. They come to other countries and then try to make them change the rules to suit them, whether it would PC nonsense here in America or dangerous nonsense like Sharia Law in Sweden. Difference is, no Mexicans want to strap a bomb to their chest. I am glad Bush said English should be the national language. His "guest worker" program is nonsense though. Title: Re: Spanish Star Spangled Banner? Post by: Phishfan on April 29, 2006, 09:46:13 am It doesn't look translated to me. It looks like a completely different song. That's the problem I have with it. That is because they #1 probably used an online translation which does that and #2 something always gets lost in translating languages. You never really have the exact same language structure. I wanted to add that I heard a clip of the song, not just read it, and I think it sounds horrible. I have also heard some of the Spanish DJs are questioning the idea. They have the right to translate the song, but I see it as a divisive move more than a unifying one. Let's be honest, we are not going to be hearing this in Dolphin stadium or anywhere else before any ballgames or much of anywhere else for that matter. Title: Re: Spanish Star Spangled Banner? You never really have the exact same language structure. Correct, but as far as I can tell the National Anthem does not have any background lyrics calling for latino unity. Translate it as accurately as possible? No problem. Politicize it? No. Title: Re: Spanish Star Spangled Banner? Post by: wyvernmcd on May 01, 2006, 03:08:49 pm Nobody is flipping out when Canadiens drive South. Are you sure that you can say that? What about all of the "canadien" tourists are down here during the winter season. Title: Re: Spanish Star Spangled Banner? I just saw a protester on TV with an upside down American flag on a pole. On top of it was a smaller Mexican flag and another Latino flag. [sarcasam] That tells me they want to obey the laws, and become Americans. [end sarcasam] Title: Re: Spanish Star Spangled Banner? That guy's actions represent that guy. One a-hole doesn't speak for his group supporting the same cause. Title: Re: Spanish Star Spangled Banner? Post by: Frimp on May 01, 2006, 05:59:06 pm I say "They" instead of typing "illegal alien" every time..because every illegal alien is telling us that "they" don't give a damn about our laws.
1..."They" aren't showing how valuable "they" are to the US. "They" are saying that we as a country do not have a right to enforce our borders. However, if we go to another country, we can't just skip across the border. 2...If we give amnesty to these illegal aliens, the new US citizens will be going nuts about illegals 15 years from now. It happened when Reagan gave amnesty, and it will happen again if anmesty is given now. 3...If "they" love America so much, why are "they" doing their protest on a socialist holiday? Title: Re: Spanish Star Spangled Banner? Post by: GUATARICCAN on May 01, 2006, 06:02:21 pm I think Frimp just hates hispanics, because we're becoming the majority. ;D Spics rule!
