Title: TDMMC: VGB - Round 3 (Mike Tyson's Punch Out!! vs. Excitebike)
Post by: Dave Gray on April 29, 2006, 02:29:06 pm
Capcom Bracket:

Why “Mike Tyson’s Punch Out!!” shouldn’t win.
I bet most people remember the great difficultly of the game.  While beating Tyson himself involved twitchy reflexes, the game itself fell on trial and error, a generally poor method to make games with systematic AI harder.  Beating King Hippo just involved knowing what to do, while only a small part meant actually honing the skills to do it.  Once you’d learned the format, the game’s value dropped almost to nil, unless you wanted to pick it up after haven’t played it in a while, and forgotten the patterns.  …Oh yeah, and because the game’s namesake is a reprehensible scumbag.

Why “Excitebike” shouldn’t win.
You remember the game being fun, but have you played it lately?  It’s the epitome of repetitive gameplay.  We all owe “Excitebike” a debt of gratitude for laying the foundation for course creation, but as an overall game, it got old quick, and that was about 20 years ago.  They tried to make a sequel for the Nintendo 64.  I’m guessing you never heard of it.
