Title: TDMMC: VGB - Round 3 (Super Mario Bros. 3 vs. Contra)

Activision Bracket:

Why “Super Mario Brothers 3” shouldn’t win.
It’s hard to argue against SMB3.  It was a good game...but the best ever?  The Mario franchise is the most popular video game series ever, and Mario 3 came at the height of Nintendo’s popularity – everyone had it, inflating its nostalgia value.  Most of the game, however, was optional, due to easily attainted warp whistles on the first two levels, and the game could be beaten fairly easily because of it, not me mention that multiple 1-UPs were prevalent.  Due to the games enormous hype and coverage, all of the secrets were common knowledge immediately, and the game presented little challenge to complete.

Why “Contra” shouldn’t win.
Everyone knows the Komani code, because you had to in order to have a snowball’s chance in hell to beat Contra.  The game was hard enough with 30 lives, with continues and 2-player co-op mode.  The idea that this game was made for 3 lives is insane.  The boss design was something special, as we learn on the first board, fighting an evil wall.  Aside from that, the game’s repetitive play doesn’t hold up.  Run, jump, shoot, run, jump, …shoot, …run, …zzz…
