Post by: raptorsfan29 on April 30, 2006, 08:52:03 pm

It'll happen soon, for both of them.

Probably Papelbon, if only because he is used more.

I'm guessing Ryan will give up the first earned run...he challenges hitters a lot more directly than Papelbon, from what I've seen of both, and if you challenge enough good hitters in the strike zone, eventually someone's gonna tag ya.

Both are pretty damned studly to this point though. My top ESPN roto squad has Ryan-Papelbon-Gordon-Dempster as my 4 closers and I think, altogether, the group has given up 2 runs so far this season.

Just some advice on Gordon. If the Phillies are in playoff contention with a month to go, dump Gordon. I am sure Maine will back me up on Gordon's ability to perform under pressure.

Absolutely...I know Gordon extremely well throughout his career. He's a crusty vet bullpen guy.

All those late season concerns...are beyond the trade deadline at that point...and our fantasy season ends with the regular season, so any playoff flops Gordon might be setting up for...won't really affect my squad.

If I get a legit offer for him though..."everyone" on my team is available, including Ryan and Papelbon. :-)

Papelbon cracked first, giving up an earned run tonight and taking the loss. Didn't blow the save though. Guarantee that this doesn't phase him for one second and he mows down the batters in his next game.

EDIT: Apparently Gregg Zaunn took the Red Sox big in Vegas because after Ryan struck out the 3rd batter for the final out, he had a passed ball and then threw the ball into center field when the runner tried to steal the base. Now Varitek strikes out giving BJ 3 K's and 4 outs in the inning to end it.

Great game. Paplebon vs Ryan and Ryans wins the battle

hey maine, do you think Ryan is earning what he is getting paid?

facing the heart of the order with Ortiz, Ramirez, and vartiek and got them all out.

I think Keith Foulke blows goats.  How this guy is still in the majors baffles me.

he doesn't blow, brian, he is just not that good anymore

btw, would you like to jump on the blue jays bandwagon now since you are the best person in the world. i know you shot me down on two times that i tried to recruit you to be a fan of the greatest team in the MLB,This time  i'm not talking about being a fan just a person that will root for us to win the east. come on, i'll give you money, not really but what about friendship.

Papelbon was due, no biggie. Its not the first time you see the guy which tells you how dominating he is. Its the next million times the guy faces you that tells you how dominating he is.

Raptor - here's the thing with Ryan and his paycheck:  he has 6 saves on the season versus 10 for Papelbon.  Pap is making the league minimum, Ryan is being paid more than "that guy" on the Yankees.

So - I think Ryan is awesome, I told you that in the winter.  I think he'll win you 6-7 games alone this year.  He's not worth the contract that they signed him too, however - he hasn't done anything to warrant that yet.

I love how his two seam rises, tho.  Good stuff!

The Jays sure are despreate for fans, eh?

I haven't shot you down ever - I'm not looking for a new team just yet.  As long as the Marlins are in FL, I'll be a Marlins' fan.

However, I can't stand AL baseball.  Pitchers should have to hit.

I am not a big fan of the automatic out either. Pitching around 2 guys to get to the pitcher and ending the inning isn't exactly my idea of excitement.

It doesn't have to be an automatic out.  Pitchers should learn to hit.  If hitters can learn to hit, why can't a pitcher spend some time in the cage?

Foulke, actually, has pitched very well this season.  Even the best get hit.  Not saying Foulke is "the best" but he is very solid.

Keith Foulke is Cy Young compared to Danny Graves

Yes we are, even though you can argue that we might have a big fan base due to the fact that we are representing an entire country (Canada).

Problem is - there are only 17 people in Canada!  :)

Because hitters spend about 90% of their time learning to hit and 10% learning to field. Pitchers spend about 95% of their time pitching and 5% hitting. It is an automatic out and it is boring. Every now and then you get good hitters like Willis and even Clemens, but they look awkward and it's usually a joke.

Good one.  I agree there.  If you really want to make baseball more exciting, put the DH in both leagues.
