It happened in Europe somewhere, I believe, according to the Maxim article. They usually don't run fake stuff unless specified as being fake, like the girls you'll never see in Maxim pictures. As for the little white car pulling in the first truck- It could definitely happen. I'm sure one of our resident engineers could explain it to us. When I was a firefighter, I used to drive the trucks. We had a 100' ladder truck. The truck has outriggers that need to be placed to stabilize the truck when raising the ladder. If the outriggers are not placed, and the ladder is raised, the weight of the ladder, and the force of the motion of the ladder can cause the whole truck to tip over. If you look at the first picture, and know what to look for, you can see outriggers that are not placed. So the motion of the crane caused the truck to lose its balance and tip.
The second truck has outriggers placed, so I really am amazed that it tipped, unless the weight of the two vehicles it was trying to lift was much higher than what it was capable of. You are describing torque. Torque equals perpendicular force times the moment arm (ladder length). The most torque will be applied when the arm is straight out and the car is at the end of the arm - which is pretty much where you see the first crane tip. What makes the 2nd crane hard to believe is that the outriggers are out - the moment arm is from that point. On top of that, the weight of the 2nd crane introduces an opposing force and should counter the weight of the load. I have a hard time believing the 2nd crane tipped. The only way that truck falls in is if it slides off the dock or if the outrigger buckles. Plus if you look closely at where the truck was in the previous picture, you see some swirly lines that suggest some careful yet clever chopping.

That little car is extended way far out. That increases the object's weight and pull (ask any physics person on here). Plus look at how frail that anchor is. The arm is pointing straight down. The second to last photo, the angle of the arm is the same as the last. Also, there would have been ripples in the water visible from the other truck. Not to mention there are no drag marks from the second trucks anchors. (forgetting the fact that the anchor would not have given under the pressure. If anything, the arm would have broken and nothing more.) It is a VERY good photoshop though.

I bet none of those boom trucks, even the big one, are rated high enough to do what they are doing. The furthur you get your load from the center of the crane, the heavier it becomes. It's called physics. Even 500 lbs will flip a 40 ton rig if you over extend yourself and none of these trucks are even close to being 40 ton capable ... I can assure you. They should have been using a crane and not a boom truck.
I don't think they make a boom truck big enough that I would have tried it with. You can't release your load if it becomes unstable like you can a friction rig crane. That is why things like this happen pretty regularly even with smaller hydraulic cranes. The backgrounds don't match up on the last image as they do the rest of the images. In the rest of the pics, the people are all gathered round and it's busy. In the last one, that truck is falling, and no-one cares, and there are only a few people talking.

Torque desribes the rotational force that will cause a system to rotate around a pivot point (in this case the crane itself or outiggers if they are out). I agree, though. If the crane isn't rated for the load they are lifting it is likely to tip. The length of the boom arm acts as a multiplier on torque. So if they car is 100 lbs. overweight and the arm is 10 ft. long, the resulting torque is 1000 ft. lbs. The length of the arm makes a huge difference. What...ever ... ;) I know that the rate of allowable weight is significantly reduced by distance away from the rig. Distance is the accumaualtion of the length of the boom and the angle you are boomed out. In the 6th picture we see the white car being lifted by the green crane truck. In the 7th picture the white car is loaded on the red flatbed truck (behind the green crane truck). In the 8th picture the white car is both on the red flatbed AND in the water under the red crane truck. Hmmmm.
The red car parked in the background goes away for pictures #6-8 and then mysteriously returns to the exact same spot for the last picture. The boats in the background hardly seem to be drifting. Why no final picture of both trucks in the water? I don't see any evidence of a car.
