Title: Chargers and Raiders returning to LA?
Post by: ArtieChokePhin on February 20, 2015, 12:36:05 pm
I keep seeing a lot of different sports sites stating that the Chargers and the Raiders are in serious talks to build a $1.7  billion stadium in Carson, CA and share it for home games.  Additionally, one of them would change conferences with either the Seahawks or the Cardinals coming to the AFC.  What does everyone think?

Yeah, please feel free to take the Seahawks out of the NFC West and replace them with the Oakland Raiders. ;D

Chargers are holding up the city for money, when push comes to shove not sure they will go as the city of SD will cave and give them money.

Plus I think the STATE of California would rather take the Rams and have another NFL team in the state. I think the Rams end up in LA and maybe the Raiders join them

I don't see any way the state gov't would be involved.  These are all local (city-level) discussions, unlike the crazies running the show in the Florida statehouse.

Give it time, they will be

The state gov't just doesn't get involved with sports teams here.

The closest exception I can think of is the Sacramento Kings (for rather obvious reasons), and they ultimately didn't end up doing anything for them, either; the effort to keep them here was all KJ (the mayor of Sacramento).

There are 15 major pro teams in California.  The state gov't does not care about getting or losing one.

What were the reasons?  I remember hearing about this a long time ago, but don't remember the details.  Didn't a player get involved and have a big movement to keep the team?

Would make less sense for the state to get invole here.  If the issue is should the dolphins mov to LA both the cal and fla state govs have a stake.  LA vs Oak or SD is conflict of interest.

Senators and the Governor, and anyone else who runs in state-wide elections I am guessing they don't want to piss off the residents of San Diego by helping them move to LA and costing them their football team. They would rather help lure a team like the Rams TO the state. Keep the people in San Diego happy and not piss off a pretty sizable voting block (ie San Diego) over something as silly as football.

Raiders situation is a little different as they have been in LA before, there is another team in the bay area already and well the Raiders ownership is bat shit crazy

Sacramento is the state capitol.  As I recall, the CA State Senate leader floated some sort of bill to help keep the Kings in town, but it never went anywhere.

The ultimate solution was that this guy:

...a Sacramento native, was elected mayor of Sacramento and built a team of local business interests to buy the team/commit to buying luxury boxes in the new (locally-financed) arena that is being built in downtown Sacramento.  2015-16 is the Kings' last year at Arco Sleep Train Arena.

I am telling you that in CA, sports are not relevant to statewide politics.  The state house simply doesn't care and doesn't get involved; the only exception I know of where they made even a half-assed effort was for the only pro team in the state capitol itself.

In any case, they definitely would not get involved in an intra-state squabble.  You already know about the Chargers, Clippers, and Raiders' moves, to say nothing of the Warriors hopping back and forth between SF and Oakland.  What you don't know about is all the San Jose Giants and Anaheim Royals aborted moves, to say nothing of the Santa Clara 49ers or the (still ongoing) potential San Jose A's.  The only way not to anger people is to stay out of it.

P.S. US Senators (the only senators elected statewide) have nothing to do with the CA state gov't.  So you're really only talking about the governor.

NFL.com already has an LA Rams webpage up and running. They probably didn't want that to get out. Looks like we know the 1st team moving to LA

And in other news the Patriots are moving from Foxboro to downtown Fenway park.

It is a quirk of the NFL keeping legacy data.

I would disagree based upon one of the previous owners' meetings where I believe Mara said they don't want three teams in Southern California.  So, since they want two teams to split the cost of the stadium it would be either the Chargers and Raiders, or Chargers and Rams.  If the Chargers stay in SD, then  only the Raiders or Rams would go to LA, and I don't see the Raiders coming up with that kind of money, while the Rams really want to go back to LA.

One team to LA makes sense, two teams to LA makes no sense.

LA hasn't been able to support one team in the past.  That may have changed, but not to the extend that it can support two.

The only sense is the stadium sharing.

Jason Cole reporting tonight the NFL will ask the Rams and Chargers to share a stadium in LA and that looks like the plan going forward

Raiders aligning themselves with the Chargers on a land deal in Carson;  Rams going for a stadium in Inglewood, would like to bring in the Chargers also.  St. Louise offering a 50/50 stadium deal to the Rams, San Diego finally coming around to offer a (4) way split cost stadium deal for the Chargers, which is probably too late and not good enough.  Oakland says a stadium plan is coming, but they've said that for years.  Seems like the easiest team to move to LA would be the Raiders, but they don't have the stadium money to go it alone.  If the Chargers don't move they will probably lose season ticket holders, as 25% of their sales come from Orange County.  Plus if a team will be operating in a new stadium in LA by 2018, then they will be added to the vote next year for the 2020 Super Bowl.

The best arrangement for a shared stadium will involve the Rams, as you really don't want two AFCW teams in the same stadium.

If that were to happen, one of them would move to the NFC West.  And an NFC West team would move to the AFC West.

That's why I said the best arrangement involves the Rams, as you don't have to mess around with more realignment.

If the Raiders are left out in the cold on this they will be back in talks with San Antonio
