Cowboys have signed former LSU OL La'el Collins, as @NFLCharean reported. A potential first-rounder as an undrafted free agent. To Dallas.

Ian Rapoport @RapSheet
The #Cowboys deal for #LSU OL La’El Collins is for 3 years, fully guaranteed, per source. (@NFLCharean had it first)

They signed him just before he got on a plane to meet with the Fins. Damn!

He got the same amount of money he would get anywhere else.

He probably has less of a chance to start in Dallas, especially at tackle.

Maybe he saw the 12-4 record and sees a contender, plus they are one of the biggest football markets in the country.

Dallas just won the draft.

Per reports the Cowboys want to replace Doug Free in a year or so (granted they just re-signed him this offseason but I don't think they wanted to pay him what they ended up paying him) and they promised Collins with a "wink n nod" that he will replace him and be paid very well when they can pay him more per the rules.

Not really. He could sign with anyone and the money is basically the same. Dallas jumped on him first and won.

I think he preferred to play in Dallas.

Close to home for him. But the money was essentially the same and Dallas got to him first which never hurts

No, I agree. Something doesn't smell right. He had a choice of any team and he picked the first one he visited without any other visits? For a team where he has the least likely amount of starting as a tackle?

Sounds like someone got a briefcase from Good Ole Jerry that the IRS will never know about and I say this as someone who has adapted Dallas as my 2nd team once the Dolphins prove themselves worthless, which is usually by Week 10.

DAL finished tied for the best record in the league last year.  If Collins cares about winning and cares about state income tax, then unless SEA was blowing up his phone, DAL is probably the best option on the table.

He played for Les Miles at LSU...he obviously doesn't care that much about winning. ;D

Just a note about taxes, professional athletes pay state income taxes on their game checks for games played in other states.  So, only half the pay of Dolphins players are exempt from state income taxes (more if they also play in other states without an income tax).  However, these rookies have probably never paid taxes in their life and don't have a clue or care.  Once they blow all their initial contract money, THEN they start thinking about taxes for their next contract.

I'm sure agents educate them on these intricacies.

I think you overestimate the morality of agents.  The agents' commission/fee is based on the gross contract, not what contract is most tax efficient.  However, although they probably mention it to the players to avoid being sued, I stand by my statement that these young kids don't have a clue, or care about the state taxes that will be owed.
