Not shocking as Tunsil is his replacement.

Albert was a good player, not bad by any means. This is just a business decision. That extra cap room can go to much more needed places like....umm, everywhere else.

Not too disappointed by this, at this junction.  Since Miami could probably only count on him for 75% of the games at best, he becomes very expensive.  Hopefully now that Tunsil has gained a year of experience there won't be much of a drop off; and Miami should be able to pickup a replacement guard at a much cheaper price tag than Albert's salary.

On the one hand, the Fins OL was so bad for so long that I hate to see them let a good player walk.  But, like everyone else has already said, with his price tag and injury history, letting him go is probably the right thing to do.  The OL made great strides last year but I don't think anyone would rate them as excellent.  I'm just scared to death of the OL regressing.

It looks like they are trying to trade him,he wasn't cut today...A bit of a misstep

He's still a very formidable left tackle and teams that need offensive line help will pay a pretty penny for him.  He could be even be used to trade up in the draft and get a high pick

??? I'd think his starting L tackle days are probably over, and K.C. didn't exactly find him too valuable when they tried to trade him prior to the 2013 season.(He signed with us as a free agent in the following ear) 3 more injury plagued season later,he's more of a flyer.

KC tried to trade him for cap purposes and to get something for him instead of losing him for nothing. It wasn't about his play it was a financial decision plus they took Fisher #1 overall that same year and had a rookie tackle on a rookie contract.

As I complained profusely last year, Albert looked slow and fat, particularly late in the season. He could still have some solid years left in the tank if he gets in shape.

K.C franchise tagged Albert in 2013...

No can't. The Dolphins have to dump a bunch more to get a high draft pick.

He broke his wrist and couldn't do much in conditioning, but on the field he was fine. Albert when healthy is still a top end LT. The knee injury hurt him a few years back and the broken wrist this past year also slowed him down. He wasn't fat or out of shape though that is a lie.

I am happy if they decide to get rid of him. It be nice to trade him for some draft picks. Even if u get like 3rd n 4th, or maybe even 2nd, who knows, I hope they go for it. Mainly, they need some cap space and theyre paying him alot of dough and hes hurt alot, esp when u got Tunsil.
And I hope Miami goes with defense with their first 2 picks of the draft! We need to stop the run first before we can get a good pass rusher, unless he can play all 3 downs and help in the running game. But DEF go for MLB and DE/CB/S

I would be very happy if they got additional picks, they dont have to move up unless they can swap picks wit the other team and get an extra 3rd round pick for ex. Rookies are good, cuz you don't have to pay them too much.

Im glad Mario Williams is gone, and I hope B.Albert is traded for some picks. Also, I dunno whats the situation wit B.Maxwell but I think he's wayyy overpaid! Thats another player that should be gone soon, if not this year than next, Unless he plays much better.

With his contract they will be lucky to get a 6th rounder for him. Either a conditional 7th or a player who also has a bad contract

I don't see any team giving a high draft pick.  If the Fins cut him he is a FA, without going through waivers, but if he had to go thru waivers I am not sure he would be claimed.  If he is cut he might need to take a pay cut to get signed.

He is a decent player but not as good as his contract.

Yes he can.  Granted, it would cost then several picks but Albert could be substituted for one of them

I gotcha then, he absolutely can as long as he is part of several other things offered. With a plan like that you might as well say the Dolphins should have turned Mario Williams into a high draft pick. Neither of those guys offer much of anything in terms of trading for a high pick.

Albert to Jax for TE Julius Thomas is all but official according to reports breaking now. Trade can't go through till first week of March and the start of the new league year. Being reported by the Sun Sentinel

Title: Re: Report: Dolphins will cut Branden Albert

That's a logical trade.   The Dolphins need a receiving threat at tight end.  Dion Sims is not a receiving threat by any means.  Jax needs a guy who can protect Blake Bortles

The moment we drafted Tunsil last year I thought Albert's time at the Dolphins was rapidly running out, so this was not a surprise. It does however leave us with that glaring void possibly returning at the left guard position. Bushrod maybe moves there?

Despite the pick of Howard turning out reasonably well (and addressing a key need) I still wish we doubled down and took Cody Whitehair who was available with that same pick last year. Not only would he have been a quality guard, but as shown already with the Bears he could have handily slotted in at centre for Pouncey too when he was injured.

The Line has been crap despite 4 first rounders, so changing things up and trading Albert is worth a shot. However, IIRC Bushrod was completely awful. Don't let him be a starter again or even a primary backup. No saying to waste another draft pick on the line, but can't go into the season with him penciled in for a major role.

The line wasn't crap last year when healthy. When healthy it was one of the 5 best offensive lines in the entire league. When the injuries happened yes the line took a dip, even then it wasn't awful.  When healthy the o-line was elite

Unfortunately the season counts as a whole and not just when the unicorns could put together a healthy week. Overall line play was again poor.

Tough to say the overall line play was poor when we had THREE 200+ yard rushing games by Ajayi and after the starting Qb went down the line was still good enough to make this a playoff team with a back-up QB at the helm. Jay Ajayi had 4.9 YPC for the season! #Fact!  Saying the o-line was poor last year is just a lie.

My phone alerted me that they have come to terms and Thomas isn't part of the deal. Dolphins get a late round pick. That's about on par for what I expected (actually I expected him to be cut outright but given the event of a trade I knew he had little value).

Sounds like a late round pick in 2018 too, not this year, but that is unconfirmed.

No trade can happen till March 8th or 9th (first day of the new league year) so if it changes again between now and then I wouldn't be schocked

Armando reporting the Dolphins are trading a late round 2017 pick for TE Julius Thomas of Jax. Jax will send a late 2018 pick for Branden Albert

I'm okay with this.

Thomas had 24 TDS in Denver over 2 years when Gase was there.

Worth a shot. Julius was an elite TD in Denver under Gase and some QB whose name escapes me right now. Only a 7th rounder to lose.

Hahaha ... he had a good average because he had three monster games. Two of them were back to back with the unicorns playing. Otherwise he was lucky to get 50 or 60 yards a game. 9 games with 61 yards or less with one of the best backs in the league and 2 more in the 70s. Oh yes ... our O-line was steller!!

Three monster games can override the other 12 games he played. suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure! OK, whatever. Miami was 9th in the league in rushing offense overall (with Pouncey not playing much of at all and Albert missing many games and playing others with a broken wrist, but the o-line sucks...LAUGHABLE)

So games with the healthy o-line shouldn't count then with your cute little "unicorns" line?  Your logic is all over the friggin map.

Go be a hater somewhere else with this drivel. Guy had 1200 yards and 8 touchdowns and he didn't even play week 1 but you are bashing him and the o-line play.  Fins as a team ranked 9th in rushing offense and they missed 2 key starters most of the year, but the o-line sucks? Give me a break. You either don't know what your talking about or going out of your way to be negative. Either way you come off looking idiotic.

Jay Ajayi is a nice back, he is far from one of the best backs in the league. Please.

His success came because of high quality o-line play all year! Some games were worse than others, sure. It's like that for most backs. But his success came from high quality o-line play.

Title: Re: Report: Dolphins will cut Branden Albert

Without debating the analytics, I'll just say PFF ranked the Dolphins offensive line at 30th for last season after giving them a pre-season ranking of 19th. That is far from high quality.

https://www.profootballfocus.com/pro-ranking-all-32-nfl-offensive-lines-this-season/

Ajayi's good games came from hard running and yards after contact.

And a second source, Football Outsiders ranked them 22nd.

Dude, you're crazy.  Last year, he was one of the best running backs in the league.  There is a reason he had the most yards after contact, because he's a beast, and not because the oline was good....he was running hard in spite of the oline.

In my book Ajayi wasn't a Top 3 all around back last year, probably wasn't Top 5 either (Johnson, Bell, Elliott, McCoy, Howard.) If that is one of the best then our definition of "one of the best" is greatly different.

I'm not knocking Ajayi, he is a nice player. But his success was mostly in part a product of great o-line play let's not fool ourselves.

And when it comes to Football Outsiders (or PFF or whoever), please. They ranked Dak Prescott as a better QB last year than  Aaron Rodgers, Tyrod Taylor as a Top 10 QB (ranked 9th), and Brock Osweiler better than Eli Manning and Cam Newton.........so unless you want to defend those rankings and stats, throw the o-line rankings out the window.  You cannot take sites like that seriously when it comes to rankings when they have rankings like that they are backing up. Line your birdcage with that stuff. They are "alternative facts" to say the least!

Miami's O-line was Top 5 when healthy and when they lost Pouncey and Albert for stretches was still a Top 10 o-line. Those rankings are useless unles you want to tell me Tyrod Taylor is a Top 10 NFL QB and Brock Osweiler was better than Eli and Cam last year.
