Title: Two players account for nearly half of Dolphins' NFL-high pre-snap penalties
Post by: CF DolFan on November 21, 2017, 10:19:07 am
According to Dave Hyde these two guys have caused 40 percent of our pre-snap issues. How do we we correct that other than replacing? Hopefully Tunsil grows out of it.

* Tunsil — eight of his team-high 10 penalties are pre-snap — including seven false starts and one illegal formation. That accounts for 24 percent of the team’s issues.

* Davon Godchaux — five of his seven penalties are pre-snap — including two neutral-zone infraction, two offsides and one encroachment.

That’s 16 percent of the Dolphins’ problem. In other words, Tunsil and Godchaux account for 40 percent — approaching half of the pre-snap penalty problem on the team.

^^^ Young players that have not been coached properly.  Both are good players though.  The Dolphins have come a long way from the low penalty Dolphins under Shula.

After the game is over every player sprints 50 yards for each pre snap penalty.   Guarantee pre snap penalties go down next game.

Agree with this. These kids have talent, it can't help when the offensive line coach seems to have more interest in snorting coke off a hooker's ass and the defensive coach seems to be way in over his head.

As also pointed out in the article, they are not the only ones racking up pre-snap penalites either - James picked up four, Pouncey & Bushrod two each, experienced players. This really does suggest there is something wrong with the coaching, or at the very least a disconnect/difficulty learning/executing what the coaches want.

I'm not a big fan of just throwing numbers out there with zero context. I mean, how many snaps did these guys have? What position are they? It's not like a guard is going to get an illegal formation penalty. That's much more likely to be on a tackle. Plus, it needn't even be the tackle's fault, since if the tight end or receiver on that side is lined up too far back, the penalty will be called on the tackle (the outermost player on the line must be an eligible receiver - also referred to as "covering up" the tackle).

Likewise, a DT is much more likely to run afoul of the pre-snap rules than a corner or linebacker.

Looking at the total snap counts:

Tunsil: 630 (8 pre-snap penalties, of which 1 illegal formation. + 2 post snap)
Godchaux: 386 (5 pre-snap penalties. + 2 post snap)
Suh: 552 (4 pre-snap penalties. + 6 post snap)
James: 516 (4 pre-snap penalties, of which 2 illegal formation. + 1 post snap)
Pouncey: 596 (2 pre-snap penalties. + 4 post snap)
Stills: 595 (2 pre-snap penalties. + 4 post snap)
Bushrod: 631 (2 pre-snap penalties. + 5 post snap)

All of Bushrod's post snap penalties were holds, accounting for half of all offensive line holding penalties.
