Title: Rams breaks the gender barrier
Post by: MyGodWearsAHoodie on March 29, 2018, 02:28:38 pm
https://www.si.com/nfl/2018/03/29/rams-first-male-cheerleaders

Prior to this the glass ceiling for male cheerleaders was college programs.

When do the females and the "I identify as" clowns get signed as NFL players?

I got no issue with this.  ...don't really care.  I would like it if cheerleading were more akin to college cheerleading, instead of glorified models, but whatever.  I wouldn't care if they scrapped the whole thing, either.

Probably not long after the last closed-minded human dinosaur has passed from the Earth.

This is exactly what I thought when I read the subject and thought wow that's awesome. I guess that will have to wait a little yet. I don't think it's as far away as you might think.

All I can think about this is why?  The cheerleaders do nothing but give some men something to stare at during the downtime. Is there a large portion of gay guys at footballs games missing out that I'm not aware of? Just seems forced for no reason other than it promotes inclusion.

actullly coed squads have a greater range of acrobatic moves than the all female teams.  Women generally don't have the upper body strength to toss other women as high for flips and safely catch them etc.

As for women get signed by the NFL.  I think that is less discrimination and more they just aren't good enough.  There are women who have been kickers and punter at the college level and at least one woman who tried out for an NFL team, but they just wasn't good enough.

I don't think these guys are like the male college cheerleaders. Well, technically the girls aren't either.  I think they are just dancers. I have a lot of respect for male cheerleaders in college as I've seen what it takes. Some of those guys are even bigger and stronger than the players.

It is quite possible that the Rams intend to expand the routine to include more of the college type stuff if so great.  If they are just going to wave pomp pomps then I agree it is pointless.

Cheerleading is also generally a more dangerous sport than what they're cheering on.

Um...there are women at NFL games also, and no they are not all lesbians.

It is absolutely further away than anyone thinks, unless they think it will never happen. Let's be honest about it.

I agree.   Nobody really pays attention to the cheerleaders at NFL games.  Now if there were female assistant coaches, that would be an eye opener.

I hope you're sitting down.  There have already been two.

Kathryn Smith was hired as a full time assistant coach by BUF in 2016:

Katie Sowers was hired as a full time assistant coach by SF in 2017:

Geez, what's next? Before you know it they are gonna let chicks be refs too.   :)

You know its coming. The NBA has women refs, so why the NFL can't

If the NFL had female refs, next thing you know some team might draft an openly gay player.

They hired the first woman a couple years ago already.

And they're both good looking as well, especially the one on the bottom.

Well if they are not lesbians then I suspect they will be after the football players and not the gay guys who are dancing with the cheerleaders. I expect to see them in the entertainment industry but find it odd being on display at one of the most outward displays of testosterone in the world. Again ... I say why?

That is a stereotype.  Both of the guys I know who cheered in college are heterosexual and according to them the vast majority of the male cheerleaders are heterosexual.  As one of them pointed out the best part of the sport is all of the contact with very attractive females, that normally would not be acceptable outside a romantic relationship. He was one of two males on his high school cheer squad and went to the prom with the only girl on the football squad (kicker).  Yes, the two of them got a lot of ribbing about it.  And being they were both about the same size at the after party he put on her prom dress and she put on his tux.  He showed me the photo.

It is also non stereotypical because straight women love them some gay men. :)

I've known a few male cheerleaders and they were all pretty normal, straight dudes...more frat-boy types than anything.  In fact, the gay dudes I know don't really seem like the cheering type.

I would argue that the Dolphins have this in spades.  They just don't call them cheerleaders -- they call them the pep team or something.  There are really fit, athletic dudes out there doing t-shirt stuff, gymnastics, running around with flags and stuff.  This is just another level of that.

The Rams guys aren't male cheerleaders from what I saw! They are dancers. I have spent 10s of thousands of dollars on competitive cheer and know many, many guys who cheer and have done so at the collegiate Div I level. The guys are typically gymnasts.  Just as those cheer leading girls have little in common with the NFL cheerleader the Rams guys do not appear to have anything in common with them. UCF used to have one of the best teams in the country and I can tell you some of the guys were over 6'4" and could bench well over 400lbs.

^ I just looked these guys up and you're right.  These are dancers...not "male cheerleaders" in a traditional sense.

And they are going to the super bowl in their first season. In this copy cat league look for every team to consider if this was part of the reason.

Becoming a trend......Rams and Saints last year.  Patriots are adding 2 this year.

Of note: that is 3 out of 4 of the teams playing in the conf. championship and both teams in the SB.
