Title: In-N-Out Burger
Post by: Phishfan on August 17, 2018, 03:26:57 pm
I have been out west this week and finally made it a priority to get a Double Double and see if this place really is as advertised by their loyal fans. I'm guessing most of you that lived out west have eaten there and many of us that traveled there have given it a shot or we had at least heard of the place. I gave it a shot yesterday. I was actually in there before the advertised open and wasn't even the first in line. The burger was good, I had the grilled onions. It was a bit sloppy with the onions, melted cheese and sauce but I don't mind that myself. The fries left a little to be desired I thought but were passable. The milkshake wasn't anything special that I felt. Overall the burger carried the meal, which I expected. The place was absolutely packed at lunch time but it was surprisingly efficient. I enjoyed the experience and would eat it again but I wouldn't get another shake.

I have still never sampled an In-N-Out Burger...and it is at the top of my fast food bucket list.

Doesn't do anything for me. I was even less impressed by the fries then you, I thought they were quite possibly the worst I've ever had. Been there once, will never go back. They can have it.

You'll likely be disappointed. In my humble opinion what makes this place is their ability to customize the burger to your own specific tastes. You have to know HOW to order the burger. If you just go in and order a burger off the menu you will be disappointed as it will just be a burger, nothing special about it. What you have to do is special order your burger from their hidden menu. The problem is I don't know how you are supposed to figure out what's available on the hidden menu, maybe you have to know someone who's a vet and ask them what's on the menu?

My wife tried it a couple of years ago and wasn't overly impressed. On a different note  ... we we recently tried Culver's and she has fallen in love with them.  They do make a good burger, fries and shakes. Ice cream too.

there's a local place in palm beach county that has amazing french fries. Buds chicken.. the fried chicken is good .. but the fries are great.

i tried culvers for the first time a few months ago since they have one in jupiter. They were ok, the frozen custard was really good .. i'd say they fit a slot in between a standard fast food place and a fast casual place .. they're smack in between those two

In-N-Out is incredibly overrated.  Five Guys is pretty much the-same-but-better.

The fries in particular are far superior at Five Guys.

Or maybe they could you know show it to you? Nah that wouldn't be any fun. I googled it and wasn't impressed. So I can add another patty and another piece of cheese? That makes it great? Wow, wish there was another burger joint that did that...oh wait they ALL do that AND they put it on their MENU!!!! As I said, they can have it.

Never been to In-N-Out Burger or Culvers since there are none around me. However, we do have Five Guys and I like them a lot. Where does Red Robin fit into this discussion? I don't have any of those around here either, but I was in the panhandle last year on vacation and finally ate at Red Robin and I wasn't impressed. I mean, it wasn't bad or anything, just not really anything special. Just another burger.

On the same theme. I rarely eat at any of them, but what order do you rank the big three, McD, BK, or Wendys?

I've had and In-N-Out burger, when I was out in California after high school,it wasn't memorable...

We have 5 guys,Red Robin,Steak and shake,Freddy's,Sonic,Fuddruckers and *Culvers..No White Castle,Jack in the box..I've never ate at any of these,but then again,I don't eat out at all anymore...(Yes Mcdonalds,Burger king,and Wendy's,Dairy Queen,Arby's and Hardees too)

I used love Frisco melt at Steak and Shake,Patty melt like sandwich..Foot long Chili Cheese Coney, onion rings, and tots with cheese at Sonic.I had Dalton's burgers while spending a few summers in Indianapolis visiting my dad as a kid. (I actually liked their fried shrimp, more than their burgers)

*I knew about Culvers long before the came here, because I'd see the advertisements  watching Cubs broadcasts.

If they had the entire menu on the wall newbies would spend 20 mins standing there reading it while holding up the line.  This way newbies either order off the simplified menu or research their choices at home beforehand.   ;)

I see Culver's like a more personal Dairy Queen restaurant. The staff is very helpful and accommodating.   Our Dairy Queen in Sanford has been around since the 50s so it's only ice cream but the few DQ restaurants I've visited serve pretty good burgers as well.

Oh yeah I'm all over Culvers. Try the Pork Tenderloin sandwich if you haven't tried it.
I've only had the burgers but will definitely try that soon!

DQ gets fairly good reviews across the board on their burgers actually. I've never had one, but from what i hear they are actually pretty ok.

In Tampa it's Burgermonger.  They use Akaushi beef, and won best burger in Tampa Bay.  I get mine with a fried egg.

I have some great memories of Jack in the Box, and consider them one of my top-3 burger places, along with Five Guys and Charm City.

Does Jack in the Box still do the Ultimate Cheeseburger and their super greasy Super Tacos?

Fau ... I'm a tater tot guy myself! I love those things and if a restaurant serves them they get extra credit in my opinion.  Here in Orlando we have Beefy King. It's a mom and pop place where they serve different beef sandwhiches and spuds. It's a very popular place.

This right here.  In-N-Out had their big entry into the North Texas market a few years ago.  Ridiculous fanfare and fat people standing in line for hours every day the first couple of weeks.  I will preface this by saying that I don't really like fast food to begin with.  But I tried it to see what all the hoopla was about.  The burger was okay.  The toppings were fresh and crisp which was nice.  The fries were quite possibly the worst french fries I have ever had the misfortune of eating.  So overrated.

Yep. I consider Jack in the Box and Whataburger the best of the fast food burger joints. I don't consider 5 guys fast food. Do they even have a drivethru? Unless you have a drivethru it's not fast food.

I always considered Subway fast food but that is an interesting point.

In the little town where I grew up, we had the greatest fast food row. Within 4 blocks of each other on the main st. (Gurley St), we had Jack in the Box, Whataburger, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Jim Dandy Hot Dogs, and if you ventured a couple of blocks further into town, we had Mario's Pizza (best slices EVER).

So, between those places and my mom's kitchen (she ran a black tie catering biz), I guess I ate pretty fucking good as a kid. ;-)

Uh-oh, this sounds like a separate topic for debate.  What qualifies as fast food?  If you go back to the 60's and 70's fast food restaurants didn't have drive thru's.

also shout out to the smiley face potatoes from the freezer aisle

^ Depends.

They are generally thinner and have a crispiness range and sometimes seasonings that differ from tots.

I would say that if you're looking for specifically a big tater tot, you're probably going to end up with something more like a "potato cake" from Arby's or something like that.

I love hash browns as well. Seems to me most southern people are more into home fries but I've always liked the hash browns better.

For me tots have to have cheese,I'd prefer O'brien potatoes (or southern fried, with onions, and peppers)  more than hasbrowns.

I prefer cottage fries/steak fries over standard fries,or crinkle cut.

I prefer a red potato for baking, and most other uses...

Tots are good, but I like onion rings the best. They have to be cooked right though.

Cook a bunch of tots and throw them in a big bowl and load them up like a baked potato. Cheese, bacon, sour cream, ranch, and green onions. That's the shit...

I've always liked you, Hoodie.   :)   And believe me, I eat my fair share of garbage food.  I've just reached the advanced age in life where if I want to stay in even halfway decent shape, I have to make "relatively healthy" food decisions.  Even with that and working out hard, I am still a far cry from my 20s and 30s.

What in the hell are you lifting in there for 12 hours a week? I'd think you'd be a monster :o I used to bench almost 500lbs and could squat over 600 pounds and I've never worked out longer than 1 hour a day 4 or 5 days a week. Maybe some extra cardio.

Well, full disclosure I rest 60 seconds between each set which adds up on the clock.  I was mostly joking around about looking horrible.  Compared to my peers, I do really well.  Unfortunately, I compare myself to the young kids in the gym rather than my own peers.  Hell, I never have benched 500 though.  Good for you.

That is pretty much to my feeling, for me it's health concerns,as I'll never look decent naked...those days are long gone... :D

No gym time for me, too many hours of being forced to workout when I was younger,so it's running/walking 5 days a week.
