Title: Which coaches are on the hot seat and who will be fired first?
Post by: CF DolFan on August 31, 2018, 10:35:12 am
This is the NFL and we all know what that means. Coaches are either on their way up or way out.  Which coaches do you feel are on the hot seat and who do you think will be fired first?

I believe Hue Jackson is the worst head coach out there but I don't know that Cleveland will fire him. They haven't yet and they've had 31 reasons to. For me I think it will be the Bengals Marvin Lewis or Tampa Bay's Dirk Koetter. He's going to be without Winston for the first 4 games and I don't think that is going to help his case.

I don’t see him getting fired first or even mid season, but if Fins don’t improve this will likely be Gases last season.

I think it depends on the situation. For instance ... if Tanny goes down early I think he gets to draft a new QB. If the team is relatively healthy and we aren't playing solid football at the end of the year then he may be let go but I honestly think he will get the benefit of the doubt. I still think most people believe Gase will be a great head coach someday so Ross may not give up on him so soon.  The fans might but not Ross.

i think we should give gase a 20 year contract extension right now and lock him up long term .. consistency is more important than anything else.

i think this may be BB's last year in new england
i also think that carrol might get the boot in seattle

I know a certain coach in these parts where the seat is really hot.  It's playoffs or bust

It might be.  But definitely not on the hot seat or in danger of being fired.

Obviously Hue Jackson, he'll be gone at some point; unless the Browns miraculously win 9 or 10 games.

Mike McCarthy in Green Bay needs to have a great season, and run at a Super Bowl.  It's been eight years since they've been to the SB, and there is a new GM in town.

I agree, but there was no one better out there.  If the Bucs have another season like the last, the entire coaching staff and the front office is going to be cleaned out from top to bottom.

They didn't go after Gruden hard enough

More like they weren't willing to give him what the Raiders gave him.... a piece of the franchise.

I don't think Gruden would have went back to TB anyway.

He still lived here (Tampa) so maybe he would have if the offer was good enough.

I think that if Cleveland gets to 8-8 this year, after going 1-31 the past two years...Hue is safe.

Hue's got a pretty loaded team vs Brown's teams in the past, I agree with Stroke, 8-8.

After Sunday, that seat has cooled down some.

Hue is one win away from having a second consecutive season of improvement.

Matt Patricia's seat is already warm.  Granted he'll get another season, but I don't think he is a very good coach.  The Patsies' defenses really weren't that great under him, and that was with defensive guru BB as HC.

He has coached one game.  Way too early to be warm.

This would be his first season of improvement, as 2017's 0-16 was not an improvement from 2016's 1-15.

I'm not sure he had that much to work with when he got there.  Detroit as a team tends to be patient with their coaches they kept Schwartz and Mohrningweg around forever before the ax finally came down on them.  I;m sure he'll get a couple years to try to build something out of it

Lol ... if he doesn't get better than that then a second season is not guaranteed. No new coaches won this week going 0-7 but his was by far the worst.

Not necessarily. The locker room is already blowing up publicly. Anything could be possible.

Agreed.  It doesn't matter the record or tenure.  If you lose the locker room, you gotta go.  You can't have a player munity.

I think this is probably true.  Once you lose the players, it doesn't matter if you're right.  Unless the owner is going to keep you and overhaul the squad, which you basically never see.

I seem to recall Coughlin having pretty much lost the locker room the season prior to winning the Super Bowl.

The thing about it is they let Caldwell go after back to back 9-7 seasons (the first time they've had 2 consecutive winning seasons since 1994-1995); and other than Stafford they really didn't have any star players that I can think of.  Their attendance last year was the highest in 12 years, maybe longer I didn't go back further.

So...I really don't think they are going to put up with much regression, unless of course their plan is to really stink and get a top draft pick to replace Stafford for cheap money.

Here's the question though... If, after battling Pittsburgh to a tie in week 1, Cleveland goes on the road in week 2 and beats a stout Saints team. Now, they are 1-0-1, after facing two teams that were arguably in most folks' preseason top-5 SB contenders lists. Don't you pretty much have to take Cleveland seriously at that point?

It took Cleveland having a +5 in turnovers to eek out a tie.  I'd be surprised if Cleveland lost by less than 20 pts. this week.  But even if they beat the Saints I can't take them seriously.

I've actually watched that game twice now (original broadcast and abbreviated NFLN version yesterday), and Cleveland just doesn't look like the old Cleveland any more.

I'm just bitter because I thought they would be a surprise team last year and win 6 or 7 games. lol  I'd actually like to see the franchise do well so I can harass some of my Steeler friends.

And the winner is Mike Smith or is this contest for head coaches only?

Though not explicit, I assumed it was for head coach.  You'll see coordinators and the like dropped while a head coach tries to keep his job.

Koetter was adamant in his presser that it was his call to fire Smith.  And if you really believe that, I've got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

I did say he was the worst head coach out there but underestimated Cleveland's front office. They fired Offensive Coordinator Todd Haley as well.

And Gregg Williams becomes the interim.   Which I expected.   The defense is actually pretty good while the offense sucks ass.

Next up in the Hot Seat(s) for coaches leaving to spend more time with their families, I predict:

Marvin Lewis - Hasn't got it done, and now with injuries to Red and Green they are terrible.

Dirk Koetter - Tampa seems to be all over the place from week to week, they need a new HC.

Todd Bowles - Sure the Jets have lots of holes, but they've been bad for years.  I see them wanting to get a HC that can work with Darnold.
