Title: A coach's "look".
Post by: Dave Gray on October 29, 2018, 03:09:30 pm
My buddy Brian and I watch the games and we always laugh at different coaches that either look the part, or don't look the part of respective cities.

For example, Mike McCarthy fits Green Bay.  He looks the part.
Sean McVay looks like the kind of guy that would coach in L.A.

Ben McAdoo never looked like he could coach in New York.

Do you think there's anything to this?

Where do you think McAdoo would coach then?   Describe the look.

I don't think Matt Patricia looks like he would coach Detroit but that's probably pretty obvious.

I picture McAdoo in kind of a blue-collar type city or a city that isn't known for personal style.  He's got a fuddy-duddy haircut.  Maybe Pittsburgh or Kansas City or something like that.

He doesn't, you're right, but I think it goes deeper than the obvious racial comparison.  He looks like he's Pacific-Northwestish, to me.  Or maybe Northeastern coastal cities....Boston, somewhere in Maine, etc.

He looks homeless to me, haha. Like he needs a bath and a shave...

Big fat guys should coach in cold northern cities (without domes), and thin guys should coach in the warmer weather cities.

Am I the only guy who can picture Patricia working on the GM production line then sitting belly up at the bar afterwards in the Detroit heyday? To me the guy looks exactly like what Detroit was.

I agree with Phishfan.  Patricia definitely gives off the assembly line factory worker vibe.

Patricia looks like he crafts beer

OK... Matt Patricia is a lumberjack by day, moonlights as a welder at the local manufacturing plant, and drinks more beer than any two human beings rightfully should. He drives an old Impala that runs just fine, but looks like a piece of crap. He doesn't always stop at stop signs and the only time he visits his local Church is when they have a bake sale on the front lawn.

I think he looks like a guy too lazy to groom himself.

He apparently takes offense if a reporter isn't sitting up straight. Hehe.

Someone else mentioned that both Patricia and McDaniels seem to have taken only the "Be a dick to the media" lessons from Belichick, while learning none of the other lessons.

I was just meaning he doesn't look like a coach  ... period. He looks more like the guy in the stands who is fat, drunk and screaming at the coach and QB.

^ I actually agree.   I think Patricia looks sloppy, like his beard is just...whatever.  He doesn't have a look.

I feel like Matt Burke pulls off the same kind of look, but way less schlubby.

On an off note. What's with all the scruffy beards these days anyhow? Is it some kind of hipster movement or something? Even Burke's is scruffy looking. I don't have anything against beards, but trim and clean that shit once in a while. Some of these people these days look like they were lost in the wilderness for 13 months. Barry Gibb had a well maintained and good looking beard.

The trend is a long lumberjack looking beard these days although that’s starting to get old. Not maintaining it like Patricia has never been the “cool” thing that I know of. He just looks sloppy.

I had a long beard and I did no maintenance on it. Hipsters buy grooming products, hippies just grow beards.
