Then there's Andy Dalton at $16 million. After that, there's a significant drop as we get into backup, old contracts and rookie contracts, but the bottom line is that if you want a non-rookie-contract quarterback with decent skills as your backup today, you're going to have to pay for it. As for starting quarterback, Marcus Mariota's rookie contract illustrates it well: About $6 million a year for the first 4 years and then $20 million plus for the year-5 option. Ouch. Hell, we could have brought him in to be our starter for a couple million. Probably wouldn't have made a difference this year one way or the other. He happened to be in the right place at the right time, maybe? That deal has little in the way of guaranteed money so if he shits the bed this year, they can release him with a minimal cap hit.
