Title: What number should Tua wear?
Post by: CF DolFan on April 28, 2020, 11:09:06 am
Numbers 12 & 13 have been retired for Griese and Marino so that isn't happening. Tua said he doesn't care. With that said what number do you think he should he select and why? Not sure why but for whatever reason I can see him wearing #10.

I don't know why but I've always hated any player wearing 1. I for one really hope that he doesn't go that way.

Number 3
I heard several people on South Florida radio say they do not want him wearing 3 as that is synonymous with Dwayne Wade and he is bigger than Marino down there these days.

Rosen should give it up by being cut if Tua isn't sidelined by injuries. Don't need all three of those guys.

I read somewhere that his high school jersey number was 11 and that's the number he wants.  He wore 13 at Bama because 11 wasn't available.   Who wears 11 for you guys and do you think that guy would be willing to give it up?

That would be Parker, so a really tough sell.

If Parker is willing to give it up, then he should be able to name his price.   After all, he's dealing with a top 5 pick rookie signing bonus

Really??  I'm hoping Parker did enough last year so Miami can trade him for something useful before he goes back to being the no talent he was the first five years in uniform for Miami.

I can appreciate the sentiment, but he's only been here five years so far. First four years: Toilet bowl. Last year, Pro Bowl

Maybe Tua to wear #11, Parker (with a little Tua cash) to switch to his Louisville days #9.

Sounds like a fair swap to me. ;D

NFL receivers can't wear single digits.

NFL receivers can't wear single digits.

Damn, forgot about that. After seeing Ty Montgomery still wearing 88 as a running back the last few years I thought the NFL may have softened on that stance...

Someone may have to have the hard word with Parker then: "Devante, you have two choices - you can sell your number to Tua, or you can play in Detroit this year. It's entirely your choice..."  ;) :P

Title: Re: What number should Tua wear?
Post by: Spider-Dan on April 29, 2020, 11:39:04 pm
I think Montgomery was still classified as a WR.  But I don't believe there is a rule restriction on WRs taking handoffs (or on RBs flanking out wide, for that matter), so...

NFL numbers for each position. Some seem odd to me like why receivers can wear either 10-19 or 80-89.

1–9: quarterbacks, kickers, and punters
10–19: quarterbacks, kickers, punters, and wide receivers
20–39: running backs and defensive backs
40–49: running backs, defensive backs, linebackers, and tight ends
50–59: linebackers, defensive linemen, and centers
60–79: offensive linemen and defensive linemen
80–89: wide receivers and tight ends
90–99: linebackers and defensive linemen

Feel free to blame Keyshawn Johnson for that, although it would have happened anyway since there were just too many receivers (and tight ends) on rosters, particularly as when you consider retired numbers. The Dolphins had a pretty average 6 WRs on the 53-man roster at the start of last season. Add a couple of tight ends and a couple of injuries and you're already at 10.

Title: Re: What number should Tua wear?
Post by: Tenshot13 on April 30, 2020, 09:10:52 am
It makes sense why they do that.

Any given team is going to have at most 3 QBs, 1 kicker and 1 punter.  4 players for numbers 1-19.  Any given team is going to have 6 WRs and 3-4 TEs for numbers 80-89

Title: Re: What number should Tua wear?
Post by: Spider-Dan on April 30, 2020, 03:10:59 pm
From a rules perspective, I'm not sure what the difference between a QB, RB, and WR is.

I've seen a QB-numbered player split out wide at the snap and receive a pass.
I've seen an RB-numbered player take a snap, drop back, and throw a pass.
I've seen a WR-numbered player line up behind the QB and receive a handoff.

As far as I can tell, the only rule really preventing Parker from being designated a "QB" and wearing #9 (while performing exactly the same job) is the limitation on the number of QBs that can dress.

Maybe he should wear No. 5, since he was the 5th pick.

Would like to see No. 3 on him, but of course Rosen has it and wasn't he No. 3 at UCLA as well?  Hard to give it unless Tua gives up the $$$

5 for me

The one number I didn't want him to take. Even Joe Rose said ...  isn't that number jersey they give everyone until they get a number? Either way ... here's hoping he is the second coming of Garo Yepremian

Garo was the definition of those early 70s Dolphins - the exact opposite of sexy, kind of clumsy in some ways, yet did his job on a team of misfits that somehow managed to beat the hell out of everyone else to stamp their unique place in history.

I'll take that. :D

Sadly, he is most remembered for that botched FG that was ran back for a TD during the Superbowl.

Going back to the retirement of numbers thing... here in Australia numbers are retired for a year, but then revived. There are so many kids who grow up idolizing their heroes (or in some cases parents) who want to wear the same numbers as a tribute. #23 was nothing until Michael Jordan, then everyone gravitated to it and it became magic over a number of sports - in Australia, Shane Warne for cricket, Andrew McLeod for AFL, followed by Buddy Franklin and many others who followed - it has gained a bit of a status for Aboriginal players here to have that particular number. We have legends but the number never stops with them, it's inspiration for the next generation to carry on.

It seems odd in a way that NFL with much bigger team lists and history, will retire a number forever. Yes it seems noble and impressive at first, but really is it? Having flags and tributes at the stadiums for retired players is one thing, having their names and achievements on a numbered locker for future players who share that number should mean so much more for those in the years and decades that follow. It doesn't stop the legend, it builds on it in a positive way.

You know what I would love to see? (although I know it will never happen). Marino un-retire his #13 and present it to Tua as a changing of the guard.

It's one thing to unretire a number because your team signed a veteran Peyton Manning, a sure-fire first-ballot HOFer based on his existing body of work.

It's quite another to unretire a number for an unproven rookie who has yet to take a single snap.  If Marino unretires his number for Tua, why even have it retired?

Exactly, there is only one Number 13. Even Alex Rodriguez took the number because he was sch a fan of Marino. Hopefully, one day we can say "There is only one Number 1".

If I remember correctly, Kuechenberg was pissed about him missing that FG (saw a video on it), especially since if he would have made it, they prob would have won 17-0 and capping off the perfect at 17-0 season.

First off I liked Warren Moon as he was good but there is no doubt he was given props much more easily than others. He was basically a .500 qb. His record was 102-101. Tannehill has better completion and td/int ratios.

Besides that ... Moon never won anything. I really hope Tua wins a lot and often.  :D

You can't compare things like TD/INT ratios of previous eras to the modern one. It just doesn't work. The rules have completely changed the modern game and it's only going to get even more lopsided with all the rule changes for player safety. Coming across the middle of the field used to be a dangerous thing, it isn't anymore. And before that just playing WR was a dangerous thing, now a hand check is considered roughing up a WR. Not to mention that even glaring at a QB will get you a 15 yard unsportmanlike now.

Moon played professionally for 23 seasons, won 5 Championships in the CFL before joining the NFL, and held several all-time passing records when he retired.  He was head and shoulders above Tannehill.

LMAO ... there is a really big reason the CFL doesn't count in our record books. You might as well throw in Arena stats for Kurt Warner who did actually win something. Like I said ... I remember him well and liked him but he never seemed to live up to the hype that surrounded him.

He signed his contract today. These things are usually formalities as the years and dollar amounts are set in stone but sometimes there is a complaint about offset language b the team or player and that leads to delays. Not here so he can get to work immediately.

“By the way, left-handed quarterback Tua Tagovailoa signed his Dolphins contract and writes with his right hand. He is right-handed for everything except...throwing the football.”

I knew that, his dad is left handed and taught him to throw that way.
