Title: Jets Release Bell
Post by: EDGECRUSHER on October 13, 2020, 09:15:29 pm
They are going to eat $15 Million in dead money.

The team basically sided with Gase and dumped Bell despite the damage it would do to the team, so I doubt they fire him any time soon. What a shit franchise.

A big mouth paired with small talent is usually not a good career combination.

I would really hope we don't. Great player but if he wasn't happy on a team like Pittsburgh I don't think there is no chance in heck he would work out here.

Terrible fit in Miami. Our problem isn't our running backs, it's our O-Line. Bell would look just like the other guys we have. Plus, we're not a contender yet. Just don't see the fit.

Why do you not think we are a contender yet?  We have the highest point differential in the AFCE.  Our losses (except NE) were very close and to two supposed Superbowl contenders.  We beat the Jets we're at .500 going into the bye.

I can see us surprising people and going 9-7, but that doesn't make us a contender. We have no run blocking and our defense still isn't there yet. I imagine Bell would want to go to a Superbowl contender, not a Wild Card contender.

Everyone keeps putting Miami in the top three for him. I sure hope that doesn't happen but Flores wants to win now.

I see this too and it's bizarre because the other two teams are the Chiefs and Bills. If I were Bell and I wanted to win now, I sign with the Superbowl champs or the 4-1 Bills. Miami is up and coming but unless the contract is for more than this year, really shouldn't be us.

He lives in Miami and they assume he will gets lots of ball time to show out for this one year deal.

You guys seriously have to be the most depressing Dolphins fans in America.  Other Dolphins communities aren't this negative.  Do I want Bell on this team?  Hell yes!

hahaha ... what's depressing about not wanting a guy who whines when his teammates out performs him, talked bad about his QB, and was generally a cancer unless it was all about him? Pittsburgh still doesn't want him back.  Bell experienced the best years of his career in Pittsburgh, earning two First-Team All-Pro selections and even entering some Hall of Fame discussions. However, the Steelers don’t want any unnecessary drama or extra baggage this season. They’ve had enough of that over the past three years.

It's silly to me to bring in a potential cancer for one year. For the first time in forever it doesn't seem like we have one.

I'm leaning towards this as well. If we were a legit championship contender but needed a RB, then sure. However, 9-7 is our ceiling this year and if he won't be around next year without costing big money, then why bother?

Just to clarify: when you talk about "potential cancer," do you mean like Minkah Fitzpatrick, who was a "cancer" until being traded to the winless Steelers... at which point he started balling out and made first-team All-Pro?

Bell will be on an extremely friendly deal.  When you have the chance to get a talented player on the cheap, you do it.  This is one of the things that Flores is supposed to be copying from Belichick, right?

Bell was outstanding several years ago.  The fact that what is arguably the worst team in the NFL (Jets) didn't want him and no other team in the NFL would give them even a conditional 7th rounder for him and they decided they would rather have nothing than have him on their team pretty much says it all.   Whether it is for personal reasons or performance reasons, if the worst team in the NFL is willing to get rid of you for absolutely nothing in return, you probably don't have much to offer.

The worst team in the NFL (by a sizable margin, at the time) got rid of Minkah last year.  Should we judge Bell based on what other teams were willing to pay?

Keep in mind that Minkah and Bell have very different contracts, and any team that traded for Bell (as opposed to waiting for him to be released) would inherit the 2nd largest RB contract in history. Quality of play is not the only factor here.

He signed with the Chiefs

Now that he’s signed with the chiefs are we looking at a repeat Super Bowl champion? They just got a lot better than they already are.

You are absolutely right about how a team who traded for Bell would have inherited his huge contract. I had a brain fart and his contract had completely slipped my mind when I was making my post.   Interesting point that you raise about Minkah.  To be honest, I (and probably nobody outside of Dolphins mgmt) never really understood what the hell was going on with that trade.  There was clearly a lot going on behind the scenes between Minkah and the Dolphins and it could have been pretty much anything.  I definitely agree with you that quality of play is not the only factor here. There is probably more involved than just quality of play in most trades, actually.

KC was an interesting and somewhat surprising (at least to me) landing spot for Bell.   Given that Hellaire isn't very big I suppose I could see KC using Bell as an inside the 5 yard line "punch it into the end zone" kind of back.  Personally, I don't think Bell has much left in the tank but I will be the first to admit it if he goes in there and lights it up in KC.

Wow...I thought they just signed Le'veon Bell.

That is definitely Le'veon's purpose in KC.  Clyde Edwards-Helaire is not just really bad in short yardage situations, he's arguably one of the worst short yardage backs in the entire league so far this season. CEH has had 7 goal-to-go carries this year, and he has turned those 7 carries into 1 total yard, zero TDs. The kid needs open space to operate.

Doesn’t mean he makes sense for the Dolphins.  On the same vein as my comments in the Belichick doesn’t have a coaching tree thread.  Just because BB can say to a player, “I don’t give a shit what crap you got away with elsewhere, in NE you follow the rules “ And players fall in line doesn’t mean it would work when Flores says it.
