The Cleveland Indians are no more. Guardians was chosen after over 1190 names were considered. It is drawn from the Guardians of Traffic on the Hope Memorial Bridge outside the stadium.

Another team succumbs to the cancel culture bullshit

This has been inevitable for a while and in a couple of years nobody will remember or care.

Also, this isn’t cancel culture.  It’s capitalism.  Cleveland is choosing this for themselves because it’s a more financially viable path.  Nobody is making them do it.  They are a business and it’s harder to sell merch and they’ll likely do better with the new branding.

Not surprising that some folks are upset that the USA is not as racist today as it was in 1915.  Racism is still a problem but being less racist upsets some.

I was really hoping for Cleveland Spiders.  Guardians is kinda lame, though I understand the connection to the city.

Interested to see what the mascot and logo are.  Hopefully there's a decent option to get on a hat, instead of that incredibly terrible block C.

edit: They're replacing the terrible block C with a new, better one!  We are pleased.

As a traditionalist I was hoping for the Rustlers or maybe the Lake Shores or Bluebirds. 

Indians is racist?   I can't name one person that is offended by the nickname Indians for a team.  Or even the Redskins for that matter.  That name was actually invented by a Native American.

No different than Aunt Jemima, Uncle Ben's, or any other minorities being scrubbed from retail products. Give it a while, all the woke crowd currently crying that it's racist to have minorities on such products will be the first ones saying, "Why aren't black people being represented on products and in advertising, that's racist".  It's all hypocritical nonsense.

I already don't care.  LOL   Honestly, I think it is kind of silly, but I'm not going to get spun up about it because we have a hell of a lot bigger problems in this country than sports teams whitewashing (no pun intended) their names.

In the 60's they thought we would be flying in cars by now but instead we are just discovering food brands are racist. Only white labeled foods are accepted by minorities and liberals.

There is a difference between using minorities in advertising and using stereotypes and cartoons charactertors of minorities.  Of course  those promoting racist stereotypes to justify continuing the racist divide have a problem with black santas but want cartoon indians

I'm more okay when the actually minorities are offended versus some white woke liberal who thinks it shouldn't be that way.  People are way too soft these days, but if the actually minorities being displayed under these products and sports teams find this sort of thing offensive, then by all means change it.

I don't think most people care about a Black Santa or gay or female super hero or whatever as much as you want them to. Most people don't want the ones they know changed to make it that way but create a new one and they will support it. Who doesn't like Black Panther but it would have sucked had they turned Superman into a black guy. Re-do Frosty with a Black Santa and people would be upset just as would they if someone made Pinocchio a girl.

Regarding the comic thing, I kinda understand both sides.  On one hand, you want characters to look how you imagine them on the page.  But on the other hand, we don't live in a world with only white men anymore.  Things have to evolve and change. 

So, some are more jarring that others.  I think it really depends on who is cast and how its done.  There's also the reality of wanting to make a product that is marketable to more people.  The Fast and Furious is some dumb shit, but it has a whole cast of people who look different and can appeal in lots of different markets.  That's part of why it makes so much money.

That is good and bad, both -- watering down stories to appeal to everyone maybe isn't always best.  Like most things, there's a balance.

I agree with pretty much everything you said but I also think most people like consistency. It's the outliers screaming for change. Most people would be just as upset if they remade Sanford and Son with white people.

I was so on board with the Spiders (for rather obvious reasons) but I am warming up to Guardians.  It's a strong and unique symbol of the city.

I'm not sure what I am going to do with my Indians gear.  As I've said before, Chief Wahoo was literally the reason I became an Indians fan (http://www.thedolphinsmakemecry.com/forums/index.php?topic=22041.msg296626#msg296626).  I have a bunch of Indians gear with Chief Wahoo on it, and a few things that don't have him.

I think the only thing I can see myself wearing going forward is my fake Ricky Vaughn jersey.  Outside of that, wearing Indians gear will probably get me lots of thumbs up from MAGA types, which is definitely not the kind of experience I would enjoy.

I'm sorry to see the Indians name go, I don't think it's used as derogatory.  On the other hand the Chief Wahoo had to go (I thought they removed this a couple years ago), as it's a cartoonish, drunken portrayal of an indian.  I also have a *fake* Ricky Vaughn jersey I'll continue to wear, but I need a hat to go with it, so I better order one.

The Indians thing is like calling a team the Europeans to me so I don't see the slur. Many different nationalities make up Indians.  I may not agree with removing Redskins but I at least understand that.

The capitol of India is New Delhi.

The capital of the Netherlands is Amsterdam.

I haven't actually looked into it: What's the significance of the name Guardians to Cleveland.

Anyone familiar with this?  I'm sure I could just Google it, but I'd like to hear it.

The Hope Memorial Bridge, built in 1932, has 8 statues symbolizing progress in transportation, officially known as the Guardians of Traffic.   The bridge was renovated in the early 1980s; the statues were "sandblasted" with crushed walnut shells to remove decades of soot and grime.

Iceland is a country in the North Atlantic, Reykjavik is its capital.

I never knew about them before the name change.  It's a pretty interesting city feature, IMO.

No, if they were cancelled they would have been shut down. People voiced their displeasure and still drink coke etc. Actually bitching, whining, and threatening until you get something cancelled is pretty much a liberal thing.
