Title: Reality TV needs a streaming update
Post by: Dave Gray on August 24, 2021, 10:15:56 am
Reality or documentary TV / home improvement / competition shows are built around a format:

Introduce the premise.
Show what happened on the last episode of the show
New material.
Set up drama on the way to commercial, usually with a bleeped out curse word.
Preview what's coming up after the break.
Return from break, to replay what we've already seen.
Show drama resolution.
Preview what's on the next episode.

This format is essentially built to bring viewers back either from commercials or on a week to week basis, which isn't needed for streaming.

It seems to me, you could take a 44 minute runtime and easily chop it down to 30 minutes, just by cutting the repeat stuff...like a slimmer version of the same material.

I want this.

It isn't just for streaming purposes, I always hated that formula on tv.

I hate it too, but at least I know why they did it.  They were stringing you along to keep watching.  But on streaming, they don't care about that anymore.

Drives me crazy to see recaps after every commercial break. They kill the excitement they have generated.
