Title: Raise your glasses, gentlemen
Post by: ArtieChokePhin on October 29, 2021, 08:04:44 am
With the Cardinals loss last night, the 1972 Dolphins remain the only perfect team in history.

It's sad that this is all we have to hang our hats on these days.

Cheers to AJ Green for not turning around to see if the ball was coming at him.

One more year down.  It'd be nice to die with this record in tact.

Could they have called Defensive Pass Interference on that coverage if they wanted to? It looked to me like both guys had their arms around each other so it kinda balanced out?

PI calls are always open for interpretation but the fact that he didn't even turn around while the CB caught it like a pass to me makes it a right no call. The only way that happened is if.......no, there is no excuse. Even if the play is not designed for you, you are aware that you are a receiving option at all times anyway. I have no idea what he was thinking.

Dave, I wish you a very long, healthy, and happy life.  But I agree.  I hope the record is in tact when I die as well.  Since I'm 57, my odds are better than yours, youngster.  :)

Side note, I'm glad that Coach Shula died with the Perfect Season in tact and his all time Wins record in tact as well.  He took such pride in those two records and it would have been a shame if either of them fell while he was still alive.

Well, maybe the upcoming 50th anniversary of that perfect season will prove to be an example of exquisite symmetry. A guy can dream, can't he? And to think that if the '73 Dolphins hadn't lost the first game of that season that they'd be undefeated twice.

"I wish for Tua to win the Superbowl MVP."

"Tua Tagovailova is named Superbowl MVP for the Denver Broncos!"

I think they actually also lost in Week 13 to the Colts.  But it was still a pretty amazing back to back years in 1972 and 1973.   A lot of the players from the Dolphins back then have said over the years that the team was actually a better and more dominant team in 1973 than they were in 1972.  When you look at each week of the 1973 season, I can see their point.  They dominated most of the games that year during the regular season and absolutely dominated their opponents in their 3 playoff (including Super Bowl) games.

Not quite as catastrophic as Dave dying only moments before the Jets going 20-0 next season.

I'm switching my diet to 100% bacon to better my chances.

While I'm glad it remains it has become very hard to celebrate this almost 50 year old accomplishment. This would mean more to me if we had other more current things to cheer about.

If you had to pick one or the other, would you rather die with the undefeated record in tact or see Miami win a Superbowl or two.

Hell, you might lose some weight and have more energy. Keto does work, LMAO

There are probably some current Dolphin's players whose parents weren't alive last time the Dolphins won the Superbowl.

As long as MIA is the only undefeated champion, that means more to me than any SB victory.

Do you think Colts fans today still enjoy and celebrate their SB win in '06?  Or Giants fans with the wins in '07 and '11?  Hell, Philly already fired the coach that won the only SB in their history just 4 years ago.

A team wins the Super Bowl every year.  As soon as the next one wins, you're just another disappointed fan base.  The Perfect Season gives Dolphin fans something to celebrate every year.

I agree.  And that was an excellent way to frame it.  I had never thought about it that way before.

I agree also. However, it would be nice to see a little progress in this century though lol

True.  I've just had my hopes dashed by this organization for so long that I try to restrain my optimism.   :D

It's not a matter of if, but when another team comes along and goes undefeated. 1985 Bears, 2007 Patsies. All you need is an exceptionally talented team with a little bit of luck, and then the Dolphins' only claim to fame will be wiped out. And then what will we be left with?

I really can't get into this type of celebration anymore when the Dolphins have sucked for so long.  It's okay for Csonk and the guys to celebrate, but for the fans I'm over it.  With longer seasons & playoffs now it is harder to go undefeated all the way through the SuperBowl.  I hate to say it but the Patriots team that lost in the SuperBowl was probably just as deserving.

Then don't say it. They got what they deserved.

Most 15-1 teams don't even win the Super Bowl.
Most undefeated teams are run by cowards risk-averse head coaches who will shut it down the moment they clinch homefield.
The 2007 Patriots team was a perfect storm: a team with multiple titles and the job security to risk injury trying to make history, and a coach with the killer instinct to keep his foot on the gas all the way until the end of the game to prevent fluke comebacks.
And as the length of the season increases, the Perfect Season becomes harder and harder to match.
