Will Henne be at practice tonight?

By Ben Volin | Saturday, July 26, 2008, 03:13 PM

Signs point to Yes, because NFL Network’s Adam Schefter is reporting that Chad Henne, one of two second-round picks, has agreed to a four-year deal worth $3.5 million, with $1.5 million guaranteed.

The Dolphins had 79 players in camp this morning at the first workout of Training Camp, which implied that Henne’s signing was imminent. There was allegedly a hang-up in the negotiations because Packers quarterback Brian Brohm, picked one spot ahead of Henne in April’s draft, has yet to sign.

Both quarterbacks are represented by agent Justin Schulman, who also happens to be John Beck’s agent. Wonder who he’s pulling for in the Dolphins QB competition?

So that does it — All nine draft picks have been signed. Kudos to Parcells/Ireland/Sparano for getting it done, like they said they would.

How excited are you to see Henne in aqua and orange? I’ll be blogging live from the 5 p.m. practice to let you know if he’s out there and how he looks with the offense.

Anything else you want to know about tonight’s practice, post your question here in the next 90 minutes.

UPDATE: Post reporter Edgar Thompson confirms through a source that the team has reached an agreement, but Henne is still waiting to sign on the dotted line.

Rookie QB Chad Henne signs with Dolphins

By EDGAR THOMPSON
Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

Saturday, July 26, 2008

DAVIE — Dolphins rookie quarterback Chad Henne's holdout seems to have lasted just one practice.

The team agreed to a four-year deal with Henne this afternoon in between two-a-day sessions, according to a source. Financial terms were not provided, but the NFL Network reports the deal is worth $3.5 million, with $1.5 million guaranteed.

With Henne's deal, the Dolphins have signed all nine of their draft picks.

Henne, considered by many to be the team's quarterback of the future, was not at the team's practice facility when it opened training camp this morning.

Henne's absence put the much-anticipated, three-man Dolphins quarterback competition on hold.

While Henne, the No. 57 pick in last April's draft, was involved in negotiations, quarterbacks John Beck and Josh McCown got loose throwing passes as they prepare for one of the most heated position battles entering training camp.

Coach Tony Sparano said after the first practice that he would have liked to have had all three of his quarterbacks on the field.

"Those quarterbacks threw an awful lot of balls," Sparano said. "The concern for me: I just worry the installation (of the offense) is going on. It went on yesterday.

"A young quarterback missing that kind of time and missing the installs is the concern."

Henne, 23, already is playing catch-up with the two veterans, who spent much of the off-season working with quarterbacks coach David Lee.

McCown, a sixth-year pro signed as a free agent in March, has the most experience of the group. He has started 31 NFL games and thrown for 35 touchdowns.

Beck, the No. 40 pick in the 2007 draft out of BYU, struggled as a rookie, throwing for one touchdown in five games last season.

But Sparano said even if Henne had practiced Saturday morning, he would have received fewer repetitions than McCown and Beck based on the team's practice schedule.

The Dolphins will give the majority of snaps each practice to two quarterbacks, Sparano said. The third quarterback will take part in 7-on-7 drills.

Henne signs, will practice this afternoon

Chad Henne has signed a four-year contract and will be at the practice that begins in 10 minutes, colleague Jeff Darlington is reporting.

Henne missed only one practice and now the Dolphins have all their draft picks signed and in camp.

Meanwhile, the Dolphins cut offensive tackle Julius Wilson before the afternoon practice.

Dolphin quarterback Henne ends hold-out; returns to camp

BY JEFF DARLINGTON
Miami Herald

Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne has ended a short holdout from training camp, and he is expected to practice this evening for the team's 5 p.m. session.

Henne signed a four-year deal, becoming the ninth and final draft pick to agree to terms with Miami. Although financial terms were not immediately available, the NFL Network reported that the deal is worth $3.5 million.

It seemed strange initially that Henne and his agent, Justin Schulman, would allow the holdout to keep him from attending the first practice, given his potential chance to compete for the starting job.

But apparently, because Packers quarterback Brian Brohm, who was selected one spot before Henne, had not signed, it was causing issues with negotiations. Henne is represented by the same agent as quarterback John Beck, who was selected 17 spots before Henne in last year's draft.

Still missing from training camp Saturday are linebacker Joey Porter and cornerback Michael Lehan, who are on the Physically Unable to Perform list and did not practice due to ankle issues.

The prognosis for both is not serious, coach Tony Sparano said. Sparano didn't give a specific timetable, but he doesn't expect either to miss an extended amount of time.

''Joey and Michael Lehan, we put on PUP right now,'' Sparano said. ``Joey was training last week, and he just tweaked his ankle. I think anybody who watched him out there knows it wasn't anything serious. But we need to be careful with him.

``We expect him back shortly.''

Porter and Lehan both spent the practice running sprints, and neither appeared to have any substantial limps because of the ankle problems. Sparano said Porter's absence will give the team some important time to evaluate younger players.

Linebackers Junior Glymph and Rob Ninkovich will see repetitions in Porter's spot at strongside linebacker.

Nose tackle Jason Ferguson also dealt with cramps during the morning practice, forcing him to head to the locker room for an IV before finishing the workout with the rest of the team.

Rookie quarterback Henne signs and is at practice

Hey guys, couldn't reach his agent, but the Dolphins just announced that rookie quarterback Chad Henne signed after the morning practice.

It's good to see that Henne won’t fall too far behind fellow quarterbacks John Beck and Josh McCown, who were slated to share the first-team snaps anyway on Saturday.

According to a report on NFL Network, Henne, the overall No. 57 pick, will receive a four-year deal worth $3.5 million, with $1.5 million guaranteed.

Henne was the only Dolphins player to miss the morning session while he and his agent Justin Schulman ironed out final details of the contract.

“The concern for me is purely from a football standpoint,’’ Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said after the morning practice. “I just worry that the installation is going on and for a young quarterback to be missing those installs is a concern.’’

Sparano has declared the quarterback starting job as an open competition between Henne, McCown and Beck. Beck and McCown shared the first-team snaps in the 11-on-11 drills with

Beck appearing a tad sharper.

They also cut rookie tackle Dan Gore and tackle Julius Wilson after the morning session. They signed former Michigan guard Rueben Riley, who at 6-4, 305 pounds, helped keep Henne upright in Ann Arbor.

Rookie QB Henne signs and is at practice

By Harvey Fialkov

5:36 PM EDT, July 26, 2008

The Dolphins announced the signing of rookie quarterback Chad Henne after the morning practice, in time to participate in the 5 p.m. session.

According to a source, Henne, the overall No. 57 pick, will receive a four-year deal worth approximately $3.5 million, with $1.5 million guaranteed.

Henne was the only Dolphins player to miss the morning session while he and his agent Justin Schulman ironed out final details of the contract.

"The concern for me is purely from a football standpoint,'' Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said after the morning practice. "I just worry that the installation is going on and for a young quarterback to be missing those installs is a concern.''

Sparano has declared the quarterback starting job as an open competition between Henne, veteran Josh McCown and second-year quarterback John Beck. Beck and McCown shared the first-team snaps in the 11-on-11 drills with Beck appearing a tad sharper. Sparano said that Henne will share snaps with the first team on Sunday, as part of his plan to dole out equal time with the starters in order to determine a starter, hopefully before the third preseason game.

TACKLE SHUFFLE

The Dolphins also cut undrafted rookie tackle Dan Gore and second-year Dolphins tackle Julius Wilson, and signed former Michigan guard Rueben Riley.

At 6-4, 305 pounds, Riley helped keep Henne upright in Ann Arbor from 2004-06. Riley was on the Carolina Panthers practice squad last season.
