Dolphins' Sparano remains confident in Beck

BY JEFF DARLINGTON
Miami Herald

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said Monday he recognized quarterback John Beck's struggles during Sunday's practice, but he also noted it will be more important for the second-year player to show he can put a day like that behind him.

Beck, who threw three interceptions in 10 passes during the day's only practice, appeared more comfortable during Monday's morning session, which is something Sparano said would be an important part of his evaluation of Beck.

''I thought John came out here today and bounced back,'' said Sparano, who was not available after Sunday's practice to comment on Beck's performance. ``I thought he had a little more of a solid practice this morning. At that position, it comes down to decision-making. Sometimes, a good decision is you've got to throw the ball away.''

Sparano spoke to Beck after Sunday's workout, emphasizing to Beck that he needs to accept the issues that plagued him, learn from them and move on.

''I told him to put it behind him and get going,'' Sparano said. ``Quarterbacks have days like that. If you're going to be a quarterback in the National Football League, that's going to happen. That being said, every day out here is a new day.''

Sparano did not sound as if he had soured on Beck as a result of the poor practice, saying he thought Beck remains on a good track of improvement.

''What we need to remember about John is that he's really just a one-year player,'' Sparano said. ``He didn't have a lot of game snaps last year, so what he's getting out here is really valuable for him. I like the way he's coming along, and I think he's going to be fine. He'll get better and better. He's a pretty conscientious guy that way.''

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano happy to see QB John Beck rebound

By EDGAR THOMPSON

Monday, July 28, 2008

DAVIE — Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said he told John Beck to put his poor performance Sunday behind him, that these things happen, especially for an NFL quarterback.

But Sparano also made it clear to his team that days like Beck's three-interception practice can't happen too often for any player.

"We spent time talking about this last night as a team, no excuses," Sparano said this afternoon. "At the end of the day, we have to make the right decision."

Sparano, speaking to the media after Monday's morning practice, said Beck made much better decisions and throws following a potentially confidence-shattering practice the day before.

In a brief career filled with several difficult moments, Sunday was as tough a day as Beck has had. During his final series of snaps, Beck threw back-to-back interceptions and nearly threw a third on the next play, finishing the day with three interceptions and several overthrows.

"At that position, it comes down to decision-making and sometimes a good decision is you got to throw the ball away," Sparano said.

This morning, Beck was much sharper - he was interception-free - and the ball left his hand more cleanly.

Sharing the workload with quarterback Josh McCown in team drills, Beck was on the mark on several throws, threading the needle to David Kircus on one and hitting Derek Hagan in perfect stride on another for a big gain.

"Every day is a new day," Sparano said. "You want to see how they respond. I thought that John came out here today and bounced back."

Players were not made available to the media after the first practice.Beck, the No. 40 pick in the April 2007 draft, will have to wait until Tuesday for another chance to impress coaches. McCown and rookie Chad Henne will share snaps during the afternoon practice today in the team's indoor practice bubble.

Coaches pair two quarterbacks together each practice.

I think it's funny how people are so quick to count players out.  Outside of an elite group of even the best players in the world ever, most players have learning curves in the NFL.  The average fan continues to look right past that every single draft.   If lightning doesn't strike their first time on the field ... it's over for that guy.

The sadest part is the media will do the same thing just to sell papers which only seems to fuel the fan even more.
