This has been all over the news the past few weeks.
A young girl in Mississippi was denied going to her prom with her girlfriend (this was a few weeks ago).
The school board ended up canceling the prom for the entire school.
Fast forward to this week/late last week, the PTA of said school decided to host a prom-like event wherein they told this poor girl (Constance) and her few openly gay friends one location of the event and sent the rest of the school to the real event.

Absolutely appalling.  How can PARENTS of kids the SAME AGE as this girl, who are well aware of the issues their kids have to deal with do this to another kid?  Absolutely sickening.

Here are some articles on it in case you missed it:

I saw this article. I was completely shocked that an entire school could keep a secret like that. It is either er, very small or this girl has been completely ostracized. When I was in high school kids couldn't keep a secret about anything.

Side note:  While I think in general openly gay Perez Hilton is a total douche, He invited Constance and her girlfriend to his recent birthday bash which coincidentally fell on the same night as the prom had it not been canceled.  She totally got to hob nob with a lot of celebs which is WAY cooler.  So kudos to him for showing her that there is a life after high school and shit like this passes and not EVERYONE cares who you're sleeping with.

Pretty amazing how many backwards-assed mentalities still exist in this day and age.

This is the same school that also suspended a transexual for no reason and then pretty much ran their family out of town.

Pretty sad.

Legally, I think that this group may be covered, since this second prom was hosted by parents.  This is just stupid on the school's part.  They'd be way better off to just let it happen.  This way, they're publicizing it out of control.

Yes bigotry and ignorance are still alive and well in many parts of this country.

Not exactly surprising.

Many southern cities and towns closed the pools in response to the CRA.  This is not really all that different.  Same folks, same way of thinking just 40 years later.
