This occurred to me the other day because they're playing Christmas tunes on the radio.  There's a limited number of them and they play every so many hours, and yet still I was getting the words wrong to some of them.  So upon a moment of curiosity I wondered had I done this with more year-round music.  Answer: Yes.

The worst one is probably Johnny Rivers' Secret Agent Man.  For years I thought the words were Secret Asian Man (Ninja not spy, it was only later I put together the James Bond Reference).

Dire Straits (a band I absolutely despise) Walk of Life was the other one.   There's evidently nothing about a sandwich in the middle part.

The Verve's "Freshmen." Forever thought it was, "Gino Ponkarelli never took advice," as opposed to the actual, "And she a punk who rarely ever took advice." On a related note, I also spent years believing Chevy Chase sang the Paul Simon song, "Call me Al." -EK

I used to think a line from Smells Like Teen Spirit was "I'm a skater".  It's "a mosquito".

What I find humorous is the number of song lyric websites that don't have the correct lyrics either.

I still also have questions about Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting.

Don't give me none of your aggravation we've had it with your (deathstar? dental?) plans.
Woo Saturday Night's alright for fighting get a little action in.
Everybody's loaded like a diesel train time to (?)
Cause Saturday night is the night I like.  Saturday night's alright.

I just listened to this.  It certainly sounds like "Deathstar plan".  The 2nd line I think is "time to set this dance alight."   This is without looking at lyrics.

The actual lyrics appear to be "Had it with your discipline." and "oiled as a diesel train, time to set this dance alight."

Don't give us none of your aggravation
We had it with your discipline
Saturday night's alright for fighting
Get a little action in

Get about as oiled as a diesel train
Gonna set this dance alight
'Cause Saturday night's the night I like
Saturday night's alright, alright, alright
