I'm curious as to where everyone stands on this. I'm all for it and think that it was a mistake to ever stop it. I think it's really missed in Middle and High schools as so many kids are never faced with consequences they are uncomfortable enduring. Sitting for an hour after school is one thing but not being able to sit comfortably has a whole different feeling to it. as a person who say in school offices awaiting my punishment I'd also argue that the time period prior to the spanking (anticipation) does as much as the actual spanking its self.  Even though I'd tell my friends "no big deal" in reality I would have always wanted detention over a spanking and I would be willing to bet others probably felt the same.

OCALA, Fla. -
Elementary school principals will now be able to paddle misbehaving students in Marion County.

The Marion County school board approved the measure Tuesday, three years after banning the practice.

Paddling can only be used in elementary schools if a parent gives a standing written approval once a year. In addition, the principal must receive verbal permission before paddling the child. And a student can be paddled just once a semester.

The newspaper reports that before the practice was banned in 2010, Marion County was one of the largest districts in the state that still used corporal punishment.

The motion to bring back paddling was made by board member Carol Ely, a retired principal who believes it is a good option for discipline.

I'm in favor of it.  However, to avoid potential lawsuits, the following things should happen when a student is paddled:

1.  Parents should be contacted

2.  There should be at least one witness to the paddling

3.  Boys should be paddled by a man and girls by a woman

Bad idea....I don't want anyone else doling out corporal punishment for my kids but me. I understand that they need written approval from the parents in order to do this, but IMO if the kids need this at school, then the parents are not doing their job at home to discipline their kids.

This is probably a stupid question but did they smack you on your hands? Seems like that's how it's always portrayed but I really have no clue.

Teachers should be able to dole out punishment. As they are, they can't even look at a student in the wrong light or they'll be suspended. They're so handcuffed it's ridiculous.

I'm anti spanking so I would NEVER allow this.
Even if I were into spanking I would NOT allow a school administrator to do it.

We had spanking when I was in school and my parents never signed the form. However, when I got home I was spanked.

Parental consent (continuous, reaffirmed consent) is required.  It's a non-story, IMO.

I'm not sure how I feel about school spankings. I do feel parents should raise their hands a bit more so maybe the school desnot need to. I cannot understad why parents limit theselvesby saying they would never spank. Never is a word that ends all discussion and options. t is fine to say you do notwantto spank your child but sying never closed a door and you have no idea what circumstance will arise.
