@AdamSchefter: Cardinals use 6th-rd pick on Texas A+M WR Ryan Swope, who was off many boards due to concussions but is worth gamble so late in draft.

Might explain it...

It's not just that he didn't pick Swope, but his history with picking WR's in general. He's lucky that Hartline has done something because all the rest of his picks have sucked and he's missed on many many many good WR's. I don't know that Swope will be great, probably not, but he was a good prospect that would have fit the system despite the injury history. With Bess gone they needed to pick one, I sure hope they aren't relying on Mathews or Moore to be the 4th WR on this team or expecting Ireland to find one in the 7th round.

Binns, Fuller, Matthews, Tyms

Those guys are the reason why Miami didn't take a WR this year. Matthews played well last year at the end. Binns is a solid player and they like Fuller's upside alot.

No need to draft a WR this year in reality. That would have been a luxury not a necessity

That was true until they traded Bess. It maybe wasn't a need, but it was definitely a want and Swope would have been value there in the bottom of the 5th round. It's not like kicker was a need, that was a luxury pick as well.

And I wouldn't say that Matthews played well, I'd say he played and only because Miami had no one else to run out there.

Carpenter at $2 mill+ a year lost us 2 games with missed kicks. Kicker was a need!! Guy was one of the highest paid kickers in the league and he choked TWICE....big time!

Yes I do and after a rough start by Carpenter he was VERY consistent. Made something like 16 of the last 17 kicks. I have no problem bringing someone in to compete with him, but it wasn't a need.

First off, he didn't lose 2 games because of kicks, he happened to miss 2 kicks in games that we lost, there were plenty of reasons why we lost those games. Tannehill threw 6 int's in 2 games, but I don't see anybody talking about getting rid of him. Where was this talk of kicker being a need going into the draft? Didn't see anything about it from you or anyone else, that's something you have brought up now that they drafted one. Again, I'm not saying that it was a bad pick, but it wasn't a need pick, it was a want at the most and mostly because of salary cap considerations, less to do with his actual play on the field.

MikeO, why is it that if Bess and Carpenter were players that needed to be replaced, you never mentioned it until after Bess was traded and Sturgis was drafted?  You're basically making excuses for Ireland's moves after the fact.

I've heard people saying that Dallas Thomas (OG) is supposed to be a replacement for Incognito, who "doesn't fit Philbin's system."  Replacing your Pro Bowl guard (or even drafting for depth at that position) when you have a gaping hole at tackle is a luxury pick.

1)We talked about Carpenter alot here last year and him making too much money. But lets be honest we don't talk kickers a whole lot around here everyday on this board. It's a f'n kicker! I was hesitant to replace Carpenter in the middle of last year but with the season over I got no problem replacing him. Look Carpenter probably has a stronger leg than Sturgis but you can't cost your team 2 games (team game blah blah blah, he makes 2 kicks Miami has 2 more wins)....and expect to be "safe" in your job as a kicker in this league.

2) Bess I didn't care if we kept or traded because he was gone after this year anyway. So not making an excuse for the trade just saying I understand their logic and I have no problem with it. I like Bess he is a nice player, but he isn't someone that crushed me that he is now gone. Plus I was the FIRST person on this board months ago to say he would be traded. The posts are archived go look it up!

I don't know the deal with Incognito. All I do know is he upset a lot of the front office with his "twitter antics" during the Jake Long contract talks. And as we have seen....piss off Philbin and this front office and you are gone ASAP! Is that the right move, probably not but it may be reality! The only thing that might save Richie is that our o-line is a mess right now and getting rid of him only makes it worse. I think Richie may end up staying.

Swope is being held out of some OTA's because of concussion issues he is dealing with. Think we now know why he fell in the draft

Thanks for the info, I was wondering why he fell in the draft as well.  Good find.
