THE ASSCLOWN AWARD

« on: May 24, 2023, 05:19:15 pm »

Had to delete my TikTok account.  My coworker said China tried to use it (TikTok) to extort money from her daughter's bank account.

My account has not been compromised, but I will not take that risk.

"China" haha

Unlikely, for a wide variety of reasons.

But you may have had your account compromised or it could just have been a copycat account. My mom (on another platform) got hit with the copycat account vector the other day. Someone pretending to be a friend of hers with an account that was identical, right down to the profile photos and everything, got her to friend them and then tried to scam her. She smelled a rat, though.

A friend's employee got scammed out of 10k less than two weeks ago. Really advanced case of spearfishing. Contacted him with an improved offer for some accounting software he was already paying for with some promised lower rates. Accepted the deal electronically, but that turned out to have been a disguised 2FA to approve a bank transfer. Still not clear how they got through the primary identification.

The only advice at this point: Be very paranoid. Don't be afraid to call people up through a known good number (main switchboard for instance), don't click any links, only use your banking software/app on a secure device on a secure Internet connection. Contact your bank and set up a restricted account for your savings (will make it a hassle to get the funds, but worth it). And see if your insurance carrier has a plan that covers cyber fraud.

I would also recommend checking if your passwords/account info has been leaked: https://haveibeenpwned.com/

This isn't sad news. Congratulations on freeing yourself.
