I wish him the best.  I think this is the smartest move for his career.  ...and probably for his self.  He could've probably gone and gotten paid some big bucks to run a shit franchise for four years, but it would chew him up and spit him out.

LA is a nice place to live, he has a good core to work with, he will be able to reset, and then he will put himself in a position, if all goes well, to pick up another head coaching job in a more favorable place, perhaps even in LA.

I second Dave's comments. Good for you coach. I always liked you and wish the best for you. We might regret letting you go.

McDaniel is a good fit for that position, though I am still not happy to lose him.

I wish he had went to DET so I wouldn't have to root against him.

The good news is: since McDaniel was able to somehow drag an overrated noodle-armed fraud to the top passer rating in the league, the most passing yards in the league, and the #1 offense in the league, the golden-haired surfer god has a pretty high bar to clear.

I am in a weird spot to have to kinda have a soft spot for the Chargers.

But at the same time, I don't like the Herbert excuse-machine.  If Tua isn't on our roster, I will likely not have to hear about "but what about Herbert" as much, so maybe I'll be able to stomach it.

Is the Herbert excuse-machine different from the Tua excuse-machine? It's only this past year that the Tua excuse-machine has finally given up. Note: I'm not referring to anyone here, I'm referring to the nameless mass of people that I have encountered on Reddit. I've finally quit seeing people try to defend Tua and surprisingly not many have even bothered to bash Tua in response. I don't think even Dolphin fans that were never really Tua fans are happy with the way it turned out.

Yes, it's different.  I don't think Tua had the excuse machine.  There were people who defended him, sure.  ...but prior to this season, Tua and Herbert had largely the same resume.  But the narrative was that Herbert was great and that Tua was a bum.

That's all I mean.

You're either biased or only paying attention to biased reporting. There were plenty of people that thought Tua was the better QB and posted on Reddit constantly about it, until this past year when all those posts stopped. They didn't defend him they insisted that he absolutely was the better QB and they had receipts. Tua's excuse machine was every bit the match for the Herbert excuse machine...up till this past year. Note that I'm not saying there is no Herbert excuse machine, there absolutely is, but there was always a Tua excuse machine as well whether or not you were aware of it.

The Herbert excuse machine is still operating at peak capacity, whereas the Tua excuse machine has been decommissioned and is on its way to the incinerator.

It's also worth mentioning that I never saw any segments like this about Justin Herbert.  He has been Mr. Teflon since everyone declared him The Next Marino following his rookie season, and every failing of the Chargers has always been someone's else fault... be it his coach, his defense, his weapons, his coach again, or his line.

I'm sure there are people who made excuses, but the larger point I was trying to make is:

For the first several years of their career, Herbert and Tua had largely similar stats, both personal and team.  Yet, Herbert was held up and Tua was bashed....same stuff.

If Herbert improves with McDaniel as OC, that is going to be a huge indictment on Grier.

I don't know where you are getting this. Both players had critics and fans. It was very equal. Now if you are going suggest that analysts generally favored Herbert over Tua, I won't disagree with you there, but I don't think you can count analysts as part of the "excuse machine". If you are then you can throw out anyone's analysis anytime you don't agree with it.

I didn't run a scientific study.  Just people in my circles would bitch about Tua and then talk about how we should've gotten Herbert instead.  And then Herbert would usually have lesser than Tua numbers and they'd give Herbert a free-pass for the stuff they were critical of Tua for.  That's just my day to day.  In fact, it was almost inverse excuses for Tua.  When he'd play well, they would credit the receivers.  Some of this is years back, but I had a buddy who would critize Tua for underthrowing receivers on TD passes.

Ok, I can buy that, but I have a couple questions. How often do you go outside people in your circles? Are the people in your circles from Miami area mostly? I live in Dallas. Almost no one here is a Miami fan, so they don't have a stake in the Dolphins. They couldn't give a rats ass about Miami, all they talk about is the Cowboys. However I check Reddit daily and I would see posts daily both bashing Tua and defending him. Some with stats. Some with excuses. Some just spouting off without much reason to their post at all. Same thing goes with Herbert. These are not people within my circles, this is just random folks that are on Reddit posting random shit. I'm sure some of them are Dolphins fans, some are probably Chargers fans. Perhaps they're simply Tua fans or Herbert fans, I don't know, I don't know these people or where they live or what motivates them. That's been my experience on Reddit, again up till this year. This year the Tua talk has died down quite a bit. I think most people are kinda over it now. No one really cares that much anymore because it doesn't really matter much anymore.
