Quinn Relieved of Duties by Toronto Maple Leafs

(April 20, 2006) -- The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Thursday that Pat Quinn has been relieved of his duties as the team’s head coach. The move comes after the team finished the 2005-06 regular season with a record of 41-33-8 and failed to reach the playoffs for the first time since the 1997-98 season.

"Given the success that our club has had in eight years under the guidance of Pat Quinn, this is not an easy course to take. However, our results on the ice this season fell below our expectations,” said John Ferguson, general manager of the Maple Leafs. “A new head coach will bring a new perspective, a new approach that will yield future results that we expect. This move is about the future as much as it’s about what’s transpired.

“I know our entire organization and our legion of fans join me in thanking Pat for representing us in a first class manner through the years,” Ferguson said. “Pat may be a legendary hockey coach, but he’s even a better person, and it’s been a privilege to work with him the past three years.”

Quinn leaves with a record of 300-196-52-8 in 574 games with the Maple Leafs, second on the club’s list for career wins (Punch Imlach) and in games coached (Imlach). His NHL career record stands at 657-499-154-8 (.560%) in 19 seasons. He ranks fourth on the league’s career list for games coached (1318) and games won (657).

In addition to his duties as head coach of the Leafs, Quinn also served simultaneously as the team’s general manager from July 14, 1999 until August 29, 2003 when Ferguson took over the management duties. Quinn was also a defenceman with the Leafs, appearing in 99 games during the 1968-69 and 1969-70 seasons.

Internationally, Quinn was head coach of Team Canada’s 2004 entry in the World Cup of Hockey that captured the championship in Toronto. He was head coach of the 2002 Canadian Olympic team that won Canada’s first Gold medal in 50 years of Olympic competition, and served in that capacity at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin, Italy.

The Maple Leafs also announced that assistant coach Rick Ley has also been relieved of his duties.

Wow, in most leagues, 90 points will get you into the playoffs.  They did well, and the coach still got fired.  Sounds kinda like UM.

With the 1 point you get for an OT loss, the point system isn't what it used to be. The Leafs had enough talent for the playoffs and they failed. Shit, Quinn should've been fired for what he did to the Olympic team.

As far as Quinn getting fired.  I am still amazed to this day that as soon as a coach or manager has 1 bad season, they nail his ass to a cross no matter how successful he's been with the team in the past.  Total BS,  and it's moves like this that make me wish teams stay sorry for years.  No offense...

From my experience with Toronto fans this is not a BS move. Quinn's attitude this season (and this come from direct communications with people in Toronto) was that they were just skating through the season. The team lacked effort and intensity. Quinn then tried to save face by making statements like the team is now winning games when it counts (the end of the season). My friend has a very valid point that as a team they took the majority of the season off and tried too late. That in fact is a good way to lose your job as a coach.

Quinn was the Toronto Maple leafs version of Wanny. We never seemed to get over the hump to get a stanley cup.
