At least one Taylor trade option is out there

The San Diego Chargers have called the Dolphins to show interest in trading for Jason Taylor.

There is no deal that is right-now imminent, but the Chargers are obviously kicking the tires on the possibility of adding a Pro Bowl pass-rusher to twin with Pro Bowl linebacker Shawne Merriman.

The Chargers have interest in Taylor because they are aware their championship window of opportunity is closing. Running back LaDainian Tomlinson said as much recently. The team is also very familiar with Taylor because former Dolphins general manager Randy Mueller joined that team as an assistant to general manager A.J. Smith about three weeks ago.

Mueller's two years in Miami gives him a solid foundation of knowledge on Taylor. Mueller respected Taylor as an outstanding pass-rusher, but also knew the player was often times a less than stellar run-stopper.

Anyway, I believe if the Chargers offer a second-round pick for Taylor, Bill Parcells will deal him immediately. The Dolphins, as I reported in my column two days ago, are actively trying to trade Taylor as we speak.

The problem is Taylor plans to play only one more season (for sure) and teams are unwilling to invest such a high pick for a one-year player.

But because San Diego is so close to Los Angeles and the show business jobs Taylor now covets, perhaps he can be convinced to play the two years remaining on his contract while commuting to his acting gigs.

My guess is that if Taylor is traded, he goes for a third-round pick.

One final thing: There has been a lot of media barking that Miami's announcement Taylor is not reporting to training camp diminishes his trade value. This is ridiculous.

If I am a playoff-caliber team interested in Jason Taylor, I know he will report to my training camp. His value is not diminished to me. The teams know that. The Dolphins know that. That he won't report to the Dolphins is peripheral noise that one hears but doesn't listen to.

A team, let's use the Chargers for kicks, might make that argument in trade talks and it would go something like this:

Chargers: We want to lower the price for getting Taylor because you've said he won't report to your training camp.

Dolphins: No.

Chargers: But, but, you said.

Dolphins: No.

Chargers: He won't report to you.

Dolphins: He'll report once the checks start flowing or he'll retire. Or we'll trade him to you for a second-round pick and he'll report.

Chargers: How about a third-round pick?

Dolphins: How about a conditional second-round pick based on whether he goes to the Pro Bowl or you go to the Super Bowl?

Chargers: ??

We'll see what happens.

If the chargers get taylor book them for the super bowl. They have a physical front seven and they've replaced drayton florence with Antoine Cason. Do it AJ Smith.

A conditional is probably the way to go.  The off-season lowers his perceived value but if he makes the pro-bowl, well then we know he wasn't a problem child when he got there.

I agree with that, if he doesn't want to play for us, lets atleast get something for him.

salguero hit the nail on the head with this one. why would the fins trade away taylor for a chance at a possible role-player with anything less than a 2nd round pick? at this point, if it's anything lower than a second rounder, then retire already jason. it's not like an extra second day pick is going to be such a game changer for the dolphins.

teams where the window of opportunity is closing, and are in the "one player away" syndrome, would be wise to pony up a deal. take for example the jags... they invested heavily in an unknown commodity in the draft when that same investment could have given them an instant pro bowler. sure the age factor and blah, blah, blah, but for most in the nfl, its all about right now. hell, coaches are getting canned after one year now, so much for the 3 year window...

A third was all we could get for him before and during the draft. Needs are different, more "settled" now that the draft is over and camps have started, which might increase his value for a team that finds themselves in need. On the other hand, there's little question that the current state of affairs with Taylor not participating in OTAs pushes the price down.

I agree with others here, a conditional second is probably the best we can hope for.

I hope he does manage to go to the Chargers. They're a great team and I don't have any particular dislike for them.

We also host them in week 5, so that would be fun.

Shawne Merriman and Jason Taylor are best friends.  Can't wait to see how that plays out.

I agree... I already think SD is going to be one of the elite teams to challenge for the SB this coming season, but if they add JT to that already-insane defense, look out!!

LOL.  Remember that drama?  Still......california is where he wants to be. The Chargers are the best Team in the area. the only problem is:

The problem is Taylor plans to play only one more season (for sure) and teams are unwilling to invest such a high pick for a one-year player.

But if your going for broke it just may be worth it. Taylor is that good. And Parcells plays hardball.  Can you imagine if Dave or Cameron were still here?  They would have sent JT packing for a 7th Rounder next year..........

How about a 2009 4th round pick and a conditional 2nd round pick in 2010 if he plays in at least 10 game in 2009?

I'd do a 3rd rounder going to a 2nd rounder if he either makes the Pro Bowl or they make it to the Super Bowl.
