Dolphins' two Chads hogging all the work

DAVIE - Dolphins coach Tony Sparano has clearly ditched his initial plan to rotation quarterbacks during training camp.

For the past two days newly acquired veteran Chad Pennington has worked exclusively with the first team while rookie quarterback Chad Henne, who had an impressive exhibition showing on Saturday night, got the bulk of the work with the second team.

When asked about Josh McCown and John Beck taking very few snaps - if any at all - during team drills Sparano said he's seen enough of the two over the course of training camp's first two weeks, and going back to the team's organized training activities in the summer.

"I've seen an awful lot of them. I'm starting to get a pretty good picture one-way or the other. I need to see, certainly more Chad Pennington," Sparano said. "We need to get him more familiar with what it is that we're doing out there and let the players become a little bit more friendly with him."

As for Henne, the team's second-round draft pick, who completed 5-of-10 passes for 67 yards in a 17-6 loss to Tampa Bay, Sparano said the Dolphins need to get the rookie as many repetitions as they can.

Henne's workload over the past week hints that the Dolphins view the former Michigan standout, not Beck, the 2007 second-round pick, as the team's quarterback of the future.

However, Sparano remains adamant that the Dolphins have room on it's 53-man roster to carry four quarterbacks. But on Tuesday he stressed that the backups must be veterans who doesn't "require a lot of reps to be able to get ready to play."

According to Sparano, the team doesn't have a plan for which two quarterbacks will receive the bulk of the workload during Saturday night's exhibition game against Jacksonville. But Sparano made it clear Pennington will be in the mix, if not start.

When asked about Pennington's first two practices, Sparano said the eight-year veteran's accuracy was "outstanding."

"He gave the guys a chance to catch the ball and that's really one of his strengths," Sparano said. "[Pennington] gives [the receivers] a chance to run with the ball. And more importantly, in the sticky situations in there, in the middle of the field he can offset a ball, and he's smart enough to back-shoulder a throw or to offset somebody in the middle of the field one way or the other."
