Fins: Assessing the Jets

The Jets won only three more games than the Dolphins last season.

They were 2-12 in matchups against the rest of the league.

The Dolphins were 1-13.

And yet, while the Dolphins decided to rebuild (smartly), the Jets have chosen to take their shot now.

Why? Maybe it was to save Eric Mangini's job, since Mangini won't have much luck getting another one in the NFL. Maybe it was to steal the spotlight back from the Giants, with a new stadium on the way. Or maybe it's because they truly think they're close.

The offensive line should be improved with the additions of Alan Faneca and Damien Woody.

Jon Vilma, who didn't fit the defense, is gone. So is Dewayne Robertson.

The Jets trumped the Dolphins' offer for Calvin Pace. Kris Jenkins plugs the middle, provided he can stay healthy.

And, of course, there's Brett Favre, to replace Chad Pennington.

Still, I see the Jets as a 10-win team at best, and probably closer to 8 or 9 victories.

We'll get back to the Dolphins as the week progresses.

Your view of the Jets?

QB - Favre, in a new system...we all know he likes to be a "gunslinger" and with a less talented group of receivers, I see him throwing more INTs than TDs this year...I say Favre is one and done

RB- Jones is a workhorse kind of back, and Washington is a speedster...still....Jets have the worst RBs in the division.

WR/TE-Nobody of note really...Bubba Franks?  I don't think so....Coles?  ehh he's ok but not great...Cotchery?  another "average" WR

OL- This is where this unit shine...unless you take into account an aging Faneca and a underachieving Ferguson

I do have to say defensively that Golston and Pace are excellent pick-ups...Jenkins is injury prone...the secondary is nothing special...I just don't see how anyone could see this team as "good"...they are one or two injuries away from a piss poor season...If everything goes perfect for the Jets and no major injuries result then they COULD be an 8 or 9 win team....5 or 6 is more realistic in my book.

I'm going to have to disagree about the Jets receivers.  They were handcuffed by a vanilla offense and a weak-armed Pennington and inexperienced backups.

Bubba Franks is solid, and played with Favre for his entire career (that means a TON).

Laverneus Coles is one of the best WRs in the league over the past half decade.  Now that he has a QB who can throw the ball more than 20 yds downfield, look for HUGE things from him this year.  He's way more talented than he gets credit for AND he's better than any WR Green Bay had.

Cotchery is VERY good.  He's got the whole package, but never had a QB who could bomb it out throwing to him.  With Bubba taking care of the middle/under field and Coles getting the main attention, look for Jericho to have a breakout year.

Yes I know he has played his entire career with Favre, but his last decent year...which wasn't even that good, was 2004 (361 yds. 7 TD)...I think he is being overrated just because he has a history with Favre.

check out coles's stats over the years...although he has three 1,000 yard seasons he doesn't get into the end zone often...you can say he has all the talent in the world but IMO he hasn't proven a thing and that's what counts...he is capable and better than most but I'm sorry, I'd take a Driver or a Jennings (12 TDs last year) before I took a Coles...you can attribute that to Favre if you want but facts are facts.

Cotchery is going into his 5th season and he has 8 TDs for his career...that is pathetic...I don't care if Ryan Leaf is throwing him the ball, he should have more than 8 for his career by now...he might have all the potential in the world but come on...he has A LOT to prove before I consider him "very good"...props to him for going over 1000 yds last season but still....TDs are what matters.

Look at the stats for the Jets offense last year...if you ask me it's just a large media market hyping up their overrated team just because they got a few free agents...Favre the INT and fumble machine...I think they found Faneca at a dinosaur fossil dig....oh and Pace...the only worthwhile free agent the Jets got.

when you talk about the jets, you really have to frame it in the perspective of the afc east first. They are not going to compete with the pats, so the best they can hope for is a wild card. no one is talking about the bills, but that is a team to keep your eye on. the bills are a lot closer to competing with the pats than the jets are...

as for the dolphins, sure they aren't going to set the league on fire, but this is a team that is going to be a real tough out. at home, early in the season, the dolphins are going to be tough to deal with. the jets are going to have their hands full this coming sunday. this isn't the sham camoron dolphins...

Fair enough...you're right on that aspect...and I took that into account...I still don't see this group of receivers as talented...they are all completely average at best and I don't think even a QB who can throw the ball 70 yards is going to change that...their stats might go up slightly this year because Favre is a gunslinger but I think he is going to have a shit season (Favre, that is).

I agree with most of your post...I think the Bills are under the radar this year and that they are better than the Jets...but that same Bills team barely beat the Dolphins last year in Miami...I was at the game and as bad as the Dolphins were last year, they dominated that game until the Bills pulled one out of their ass in the end...The Bills had a decent draft but really nothing else of note to improve their team...by the way the Dolphins had the second best defense in the preseason this year...ya ya I know preseason doesn't mean shit...If you ask me the Phins are the second best team in the division, (by the way the Pats are waaay overrated this year...I say they barely make .500 but the rest of my post is more on the "realistic" side of things.) but that still doesn't mean a thing when teams like the Browns, the Titans, and the Jags have a better chance at the wild card.

Wow I guess no one failed to remember they drafted a TE named Dustin Keller in the first round also...
They have three Serviceable TE's Chris Baker,Bubba Franks (one Farves Favorite target in the red zone),and Dustin Keller....

Umm yeah maybe you need to go look at the last game the Dolphins played to remember that Speedster ( Leon Washington) had 10 carries 68 yards and 2 TD's, 2 receptions for 35 yards against us....

Not to mention they Brought in a Pretty darrn good Blocking FB in Tony Richardson...(which Stropke Reminded me on TDMMC Saturdaynight)

Great Qb's tend to make Average Recievers Look Like really Good Recievers...We'll see how good Driver, and Jennings are without Farve....and vice versa
