Gruden names Garcia starter against Seahawks

Posted: News | NFL.com Staff | Tags: Jeff Garcia, Jon Gruden, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

It didn’t take long for Bucs coach Jon Gruden to name his starting quarterback this week. Gruden said during his Monday press conference Jeff Garcia will start against the Seahawks on Sunday. Garcia returned from injuries to start last week for the first time since Week 1 and was effecient, completing 75 percent of his passes for 173 yards and a touchdown in the Bucs’ 27-3 win over the Panthers.

“He’s going to start this week,” Gruden said. ”If he continues to play like Jeff Garcia, he’s a Pro Bowl-caliber guy. OK? I’ll put it that way. Brian [Griese] has an injury, we need him back. We’re one of the few teams in football who has one games with two different quarterbacks at this stage of the game, and we’re proud of those guys. We like all our quarterbacks.”

Brian Griese, who started the next four games after the season opener, was deactivated in Week 6 because of an elbow injury he suffered against the Broncos.

I have to say that Gruden is truly an idiot...Garcia is the best QB on this roster, yet he has been hyping up Griese, who sucks donkey balls as a QB, all year...then Griese goes down with an injury and low and behold, Garcia is the savior...what does this guy (Garcia) have to do to prove himself?  He has been saying that Garcia was on the sidelines because of an injury, yet Garcia has said time and time again that he was healthy enough to play...Garcia gets the start against CAR and look what happens...no sacks...no INTs, and an asswhoopin' for the Panthers...if it wasn't for Kiffin and their defense that franchise would be in a shit storm right about now...Gruden's ego is out of control and he actually believes all that hype that he's an "offensive guru"....reality check John...your not....he was lucky to take over a franchise that Dungy built to win his lone superbowl...he's lucky to have the personel he has on that team...I live in Tampa and have to hear way more Bucs talk than I'd like, and I don't know a single Tampa fan that likes this guy...took him almost halfway through the year to realize "hey maybe I should start my PRO BOWL QUARTERBACK for the rest of the year....idiot

<<<<<------- Tampa fan who likes Gruden. In fact ... most people I know do.  Garcia got hurt and will probably again.  Griese will be needed soon as will Garcia.

It's common knowledge among football fans that Gruden and Garcia don't get along.  That's why Garcia hasn't been playing.

It's common knowledge among football fans that Gruden and Garcia don't get along.  That's why Garcia hasn't been playing.

Gruden is honest with him and doesn't baby him.  I wouldn't call it a dislike.  Gruden said Jeff has his enthsiasm back and that's what he needs to play his best. He also said as long as he has that he will play.  Garcia apparently agrees too.

Gruden " He’s going to start this week,” Gruden said. ”If he continues to play like Jeff Garcia, he’s a Pro Bowl-caliber guy. OK? I’ll put it that way."

Garcia "The main thing for me, as a player, I need to play with emotion. I need to play with energy. I need to have a certain excitement about myself.

"If I don't have that, I'm not who I need to be."

Gruden declared that Garcia did not have that enthusiasm after the season opener, in which Garcia completed 24-of-41 passes for 221 yards and a touchdown with an interception and two sacks - and a 24-20 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

...

"I had to get back to where I could be successful," said Garcia, who missed most of training camp and suffered a sprained ankle against New Orleans.

^ Why did he throw it 41 times to begin with?  Gruden almost sets him up for failure by being pass happy when his running attack was being dominant...you are in the minority from what I've heard about liking Gruden...between all the Bucs talk radio I have to listen to, and all the people I know, Gruden is an egomaniac.

Gruden has a big ego  and so does most successful coaches. That is part of wehat drives them.  Most stars are selfsh too and that's part of what makes them so good ... they want the ball when it counts.

I honestly don't care care about callers to radio shows ... in fact I find them kind of sad ... no offense to Finsradio network.  I mean I listened to local radio today for about 5 minutes and someone called in calling for Sparano's head.  Regardless of any legitimate callers it's opinions like this that run a muck.

I like Gruden, I have to admit. He's a wacky, insane kind of egomaniac. Thoroughly enjoyable to watch (probably more so than his teams).
