Don't know if any of you guys/gals read Skolnick of the Sun Sentinels colunm on what was going on behind the scenes of the Dolphin defense with Joey Porter this season. Here's the link and leave a comment.

I absolutely love Ethan's articles for the most part. He is my favorite Dolphin's sports writer by far.

Joey is a ticking time bomb that I believe will be gone this offseason. I really do not think Sparano and Co. will risk his attitude for another year.

I read the article when it first came out and I usually take what reporters say with a grain of salt, after all they are trying to induce readership in order to sell advertising.

However, something about the comment "rock the Joey boat" seemed all too appropriate in this case.  I could definitely see our locker room having that sentiment.

Joey has his upside and downside.  I hate to say it, but we have too many passive personalities on this team.  Until we get someone with LEADERSHIP skills to take his place, it may be worth dealing with.  But I would certainly prefer to find a replacement.

In his prime, I guess that Porter was worth the baggage and bullcrap that he brought.  But at this point in his career, given his somewhat diminished abilities, he just isn't worth the trouble.  This is especially true when you have young guys in the locker room who need positive direction in the areas of professionalism, team, etc.  And if the story is true about Porter sending guys back off the field when they came in to take his place, that is downright unacceptable.  I know that the Don Shula days of "what the coach says is gospel" have been replaced by the era of the spoiled brat athlete.  But even so.......

Charlie Anderson and Cameron Wake will be more than an adequate replacement for him.

Charlie Anderson and Cameron Wake will be more than an adequate replacement for him.

Wish I could agree, but I don't see either of these guys being as good at filling a cover/run stop/pass rush role.  Both of them have only demonstrated strengths in one or two of these areas.  With the exception of his first year when he struggled against the run, Porter has since demonstrated he can be reliable in each of these areas (notice I said reliable - not game changing).

Joey's main problem is not backing up his level of talk and not living up to his past abilities.  If you take all of that away and just look at his play vs. Anderson or Wake, you should notice that Porter is still a better overall player.  You can try and predict when an opposing team will pass and run and play Wake or Anderson based on your prediction, but that is a risky way of doing things.

Unless either Wake or Anderson develop their overall game this offseason, we would need to look for a replacement elsewhere before letting porter go.  Only the coaches know what Wake and Anderson are really capable of.
