Is Will Allen good enough to warrant all this trouble for, though?  He's a mid-range player on his best day.

What do you think Hoodie?

My understanding is if you are on IR you are done for the year.  Period.  No trade.  No release.  Just collect your paycheck.

Teams do bury healthy or almost healthy players on IR for year.  But it is not allowed, "cheating" if you will, so it requires cooperation of the player.  "Here is the deal, you ain't ready for the NFL, you got two choices: we cut you and you can go work for UPS or we will play $300,000+ and you spend a year working out at our facilities with our trainers, watching film etc. And then you get another shot at training camp next year to make the team"  "Man my ankle hurts"  "Good boy"

If Will Allen ain't hurt or has a prognosis of being healthy week 2, he has a pretty good grievance that team should have released him or saved him a roster spot, and might win a grievance.  OTOH if he would be out until week 12 that grievance would likely lose as the Dolphins are pretty justified.

.. he can demand all he wants but as long as he's getting paid he can't force a thing ..
I don't know, perhaps he can get the contract terminated if he's cleared to play by a doctor and then he wouldn't be getting a paycheck?

All I know is that it's being reported that Allen wants to play this year, be it for the Dolphins or someone else.

But there's the rub.  Why put him on IR then?  If he's not really starter material for you, why not cut him and save yourself his salary?  The only thing putting him on IR seemed to do was make sure that he couldn't play for anyone this year.  That's at least what Allen seems to think.

There are teams that have big problems at DB right now.  They could use Allen if he's healthy.  So the real question becomes is Allen healthy or will he be healthy in the next couple weeks like he contends?  If so, then I think Allen has a good argument, that he should be allowed to seek a new contract with someone else that's better than the one the Dolphins are giving him to sit out the year.

Because if you cut him while he's injured, you have to pay him anyway.  Then he can't hook up with another team until week 6, and can't hook back up with the Dolphins until week 10.  I agree with Dave.  Will Allen is as good as he's going to get.  Jason Allen and Sean Smith are younger and have a lot more upside.

I think I disagree with this statement.  Will Allen is a very good corner.  And I suspect him to possibly be the best corner on our roster.

Ok, well couldn't they have kept him on the roster until he's healthy and then cut him?  I understand that means keeping a spot open on the 53 man roster, but it's not exactly like the 53 man roster is set.  We've had more turnover than Pillsbury's bakery.  Surely they could have given one of those spots to Allen if he was going to be healthy soon.

Now It's a moot point if Allen is several weeks away from being healthy, but Allen is saying that he'll be completely healthy in a few weeks.  Perhaps that's wishful thinking, but what if it's not?  What if Allen has a doctor give him the OK to play in a couple weeks?  Is this going to give the Dolphins management another black eye?  You got to admit that some of the stuff that's happened in the last month has been rather strange even for the Dolphins.

its this simple -

- there was a guy on waivers that they wanted and had to make room for
- Will Allen is MINIMUM 8 weeks from healthy
- That 8 weeks could become 10
- There are 3 other CB's on the team that can play at an acceptable level

It makes sense.  You can't wait till later, cause you need to make room NOW, and maybe they'd prefer not to cut anyone else at the time to pick up waiver guys.

It is what it is, its unfortunate, but he's hurt, and now he's butt-hurt about it.  Get better Will, see you next season.
