I agree with Mike O to a point. It was widely known he was out to get a name and that was nobody's fault but his. The two biggest names reportedly blew him off and now Fisher is the only one left. Lose him and right or wrong most people will see this as him having to "settle" for whoever they get. If he follows that up by not landing a franchise QB then there is absolutely nothing to excite the general fan base. this will equate to empty seats.

I'm sure some of you will say screw them (general fan base) but that doesn't pay the bills or get games on tv.

Yep. And who knows, Philbin, Toub, Pettine, or whoever might end up being a good to great coach for the Fins. But that isn't the bigger picture point being made.  Losing Fisher is a kick to the nuts, the perception for the immediate future is Ross and the Dolphins are losers and a loser franchise. That no matter how much more money Ross throws at people quality guys like Fisher and Harbaugh take less money to go elsewhere and want nothing to do with him.

And its not just coaches, its gonna be that way with assistant coaches and free agents. Quality guys on the open market, yeah they want to get paid at the end of the day. But if the money is equal, some if not many might shy away from Miami because nobody wants to be near this trainwreck. It's a 3 ring circus with 2 guys conducting 2 different coaching searches, with how Ross botched the Harbaugh-Sparano thing. That's why the Fisher hire is (was) huge, it was Ross's get out of free jail card and made the Fins respectable. If Fisher goes to the Rams like almost everyone is now saying, Ross is back to square one and still an assclown to many in this league. Fair or unfair, that is the perception.

Disagree with this assessment...Harbaugh stayed close to home.  Fisher has connections with the Rams organization and in all honesty, must look at that division has being an easier building ground than the AFC East.

Free agents will take the money at any given opportunity...careers can change with one play and stars are screwed in this league every year.

Any image damage for the Fins was created even before the Ross era and the multiple failed rebuilds also doesn't help.

Seriously?  There are reasons not to want or to want a coach.

A person's willingness to provide some self-depricating humor to support a charity fundraiser, is not one of the reason not want a coach.

Biggest concern with Fisher, would be his run first approach to offence.  While we still don't have a top tire QB, this league shows that a passing team will go to the playoffs.

You can't average 20 points per game on offence and expect to win Super Bowls, it just ain't happening!

Have you heard of the Rooney Rule that every team MUST interview a minority candidate
Did you even read the post you replied to?

Bowles IS a minority candidate.  Therefore, if Ross was going "all in" on Fisher, he would have ONLY interviewed Bowles (which fulfills the Rooney Rule requirement) and Fisher.  That's it.

Furthermore, it's rather ridiculous that you're bringing up the Rooney Rule in support of your stance, when I just finished saying that rule dismantles it; if Ross were dumb enough to come out and say, "You're the only coach I ever wanted," THAT would cause Rooney Rule problems.  He would be admitting that the minority candidate he interviewed was never even considered for the job.

Bottom line is only 1 candidate got the helicopter ride, that is going all in on one guy. You want to play "fantasy" stuff and come up with statements that were or weren't said during meetings go for it but reality is Miami is going all in on Fisher. And if Jeff comes out Sunday or Monday saying he is going to Miami all other interviews Miami has lined up with Mularkey and such will be canceled. That says it all.

I don't remember Gruden or Cowher getting a helicopter ride.  I guess this means they were never being considered?

...WTF?  You are the one that is insisting that Ross MUST declare that the new coach is "the guy we wanted all along."  I'm saying that not only does he NOT need to say that, but if he did say it, the league office would be giving him a call to explain the purpose of the Rooney Rule.

Not at all because they made Bowles the coach after they fired Sparano. So the league wouldn't be upset at all. But I really have no idea what point you are trying to make. If you think the Fins treated the Fisher interview like any other interview or will continue to interview guys IF Fisher picks Miami I don't know what to tell ya. Other than you are wrong.

Why does anyone give a crap that he got a helicopter ride?  Sometimes its just a means to an end.  Maybe its the only way they could get him to interview was to send the helicopter cause he was busy the next day or something?

Don't read into a helicopter ride as "going all in"

Besides, I don't give a crap if Ross has egg on his face.  I care that they win games.  He can embarrass himself all he wants, the fans will come back when the team wins some damn games.

The Herald disagrees.

Here is a quick synopsis of the Dolphins’ search for a coach. There are four known candidates thus far, and all have been flown in for interviews on club owner Stephen Ross’ personal private helicopter.

MikeO or Greg Cote who has better sources.  We should do a poll.

It's pretty obvious Fisher is the #1 choice.  If they don't get him BFD, move on to the next guy, its not like Fisher is the only answer.  If Fisher doesn't choose Miami hopefully Ross won't make an a$$ of himself and say that the guy they hire was the primary choice.  It's really not the big drama that some are making it out to be, people need to stop listening to the hype that the so called "sports reporters" are trying to make it into.
