I've heard about Patrick Norton on Tekzilla talk about having one,but haven't thought a lot about it.

Over the weekend I helped a friend of the family, and I haven't seen him in awhile...He's a taken his old storm shelter (the WW2 concrete one in his backyard) and really put some work into it.I cracked a joke about...You thinking End of the world? He said no,but I have been thinking about the Joplin tornado, the tornadoes in Branson,if they were 15-20 miles further north could have hit me...If I did get hit by a tornado,I survived, but what do I have if the house is destroyed. He said he had a "bug out" bag in the house, and the storm shelter in case some thing does happen.(I cracked another joke about a massive flood he's screwed either way!)..

I was kind of shocked how many of my friends have them....

One of them has a hand crank radio,flashlights,extra batteries,and external HD with his important pictures,and documents (driver's license,birth certificate)every so often Etc,etc. It's a survival bag..It's a bag if the house is on fire,whatever disaster,grab it,and go...

A lot of people on the board live in Florida, you have hurricanes, tornados are everywhere,Earthquakes can happen....

So do you have a Bugout bag? what's in it?

I had one, put it together based on the recommended list of DHS after Katina, but robbed it occationally for everyday needs and now it barely exists.  I should rebuild it.

I have some of the basics at home, but our threat is hurricanes here.  For that, you have days to prepare, so you stock up at the time.  Not ideal, probably, and I'd like to have a more full fledged first aid kit.

Nah, never had one. I doubt I ever will. As Dave points out, the only problem I would run into is a hurricane, and you have plenty of time to prepare.

I have a hurricane kit. Flashlights, hand-crank radio, full first-aid it. I'm sure I need to revisit it because batteries and stuff have likely expired.

I'm kind of screwed I've got a triple Whammy...of Tornado threat 12 months out of the year, kind of prone to ice storms in the winter, and live just West of the New Madrid fault line...

I loved Earth science, and grew up with New Madrid with little fear, but shocked to hear places like New York and Seattle had fault lines in earth science classes. Then things like Mount St Helens blowing it's top,and the volcano's here in the U.S....

I would like to get a hand held police scanner,(I have a normal one already),that is battery powered so I can hear what they are saying when I don't have power...The problem I have setting it up would be a total pain in the ass!,keeping the batteries fresh,etc,etc...

Sorry I hate the term being used in the civilian word. You need a few supplies here, not a bug out bag.

I live in Maine.  I have a generator large enough to power a small neighborhood, I keep 30 gallons of emergency gas on stand by (with gas stabilizers, although the gas gets used quite often and replaced so it's never too old), enough firearms to arm a small neighborhood, enough ammunition for said firearms, materials to keep my garden in full bloom for years and a variety of bagged and canned goods.  Anything I can't grow, I'll hunt and kill.  Smiley

^^^ Send me your address, I'll know where to go when the War of the Worlds starts.  But seriously, I've been thinking about getting a generator for those occasional power outages that last a few days.

Alas, I would not survive the zombie apocalypse...no weapons, no bags...

I wouldn't survive either.  Too much family baggage.  I have a wife, a young child, and old parents that would be in my party.  I would either have to leave them all behind and fend for myself or die trying to protect them.  I would surely do the latter.

I would survive a zombie apocalypse, I'm an adaptor, world changes, i change with it. Don't have any guns, or ammo so i'm a little behind in that, but I'll be innovated.

Come on up!

The generator is actually really funny.  The freaking thing is HUGE.  We hired a contractor to put in an in-law apartment in our basement, I ended up striking up a friendship with him.  He got his hand on these close out generators (new) from a place going out of business.  It's fine for the house (it's professionally installed and comes on automatically if the power has been out for more than an hour).  But it's more than my house needs.  We could literally run wires across the street to my neighbors home and hook up his house, if needed.
