Not to defend Salguero, but it's not the same as Imus.  Imus, though you might not find it as bad, said what he did, at work, while on the air, and while advertisers were paying for the time.

I have never really liked the guy but I think I am backing him on this. It was a private conversation.

I also don't care for Armando, but I disagree with you that this was a "private" conversation.  He wasn't talking to a buddy, or acquaintance of his.  He was sent the comment to his work email address, and he replied from his work email address.  He was representing his employer when he replied.  He should have been smart enough to just ignore the baiting.  I don't think he should be fired, but a suspension without pay is in order.

his work email address is also private .. the herald isn't a government institution it's a private organization..

if the offended vet reported this to his management at the herald it would remain private .. he chose to make it public.

As much as i don't like armando salguero's writing, i can't say that i think it's a fire-able offense. And realistically i don't see it happening .. i don't see the herald firing a cuban writer in miami that lost his cool because someone was being racist towards cubans.. i think the community would be more upset about the firing than about the comments personally.

And in general, why does armando really have to rise above being a jerk to a racist asshole .. when did that become a requirement.  People are people .. if someone comes at me with some racist shit about my heritage . .then i'm for sure going to be an asshole to that person.

I've worked with you, hung out with you, played sports with you...and I have as vivid an imagination as anyone I know. I still have a hard time imagining you being an asshole to another person. You're like a freakin' Portuguese Buddha. Wink

^^^ Knowing how yummy your cooking is, I can't imagine that would help me at all with my "drop a few (dozen) pounds" resolution, but if I can make enough progress on that front, maybe I can file a Yaz dinner under the "righteous reward" category.  Grin

This guy lost the whole offended vet thing, when he attacked first and behaved like an asshole. Armando hit back at a sensitive area, the guys military service. Armando would not have known to use it if this douchebag did not include a signature block that included he was a Vietnam vet who served as an infantryman in 1968.

No action needed. This was a private exchange. Too many veterans are fucking pussies who have an overgrown sense of entitlement. They get butthurt when people do not kiss their ass on a daily basis. The fact this guy repeatedly included the year he fought and his job title in his signature speaks volumes to his douchieness.
Other vets hate guys like him, who make the rest of us look bad.
Just because you served does not mean everyone is beneath you or has to take your shit.

TRUTH!!!

/hijack

I can't stand that shit either.  I always tell people I don't need the ass-kissing and gratitude.  It's not like I did what I did for free.  I also respond with "thank a teacher instead".  No lie  Cheesy
